Other than that retarded haircut they gave him, I think he's a great choice for the role. Bernthal can play a hardassed dickhead pretty well, and you also have to take into account Frank will likely be an antagonist in this show.

It bothers me that the actor they chose for Frank isn't pushing 60 (or even older). I'd have taken Danny Trejo if it meant getting the age right. He doesn't have to be tall, he doesn't have to be huge as long as he's solid, but Frank without 'Nam isn't right.

I'm not emotionally invested in any of the Marvel films or shows enough to really care what they do, but am a pretty decent fan of the Punisher.
I read the entirity of the Max series this last deployment and a few other comics involving him. I forced myself through the end of Walking Dead season 2, and thought he was the only character worth rooting for.
I think he'll do a decent job, based on how he's shown when interacting with other superheroes (like in Civil War). Nobody likes him, and reluctantly accepts his help.
He fucks everything up for his own personal gain in his war on Criminals, and continues to be an asshole.
The Vietnam aspect of himself is awesome, but the movies seem to be taking a more family friendly path based on the Ultimate series of comics. In that, Punisher was just former NYPD.
If you look at the whole of the Marvel Cinimatic Universe, it makes more sense to draw from comics that have established his interactions with other superheroes--rather than the Max series that gets storytimed around here.
The company is trying to satisfy a majority, rather than our minority that see his time in Nam as such a defining characteristic.
It's unlikely we'll be given the core elements that make him so /k/. The people who liked Netflix's Daredevil will probably like what they do with Frank Castle, but if you're only watching it to see Frank doing his thing, you'll likely be dissapointed. The MCU is all about marketing to a wider audience than catering to fans of any single character.
