308, they are basically the same but .308 / 7.62x51 is much much more common and therefore cheaper to shoot / more easily found in some Fallout tier SHTF scenario.

I live in BC, Canada and I've found 30-06 to be just as abundant or even more so than 308.
Then again, the northern rangers are issued a 308 rifle so in a worst case scenario 308 may be more common.
The prices are about the same here for the same grain load. Considering that a 180 grain 308 will be slower than a 30-06 of the same load, the 30-06 seems to be a superior round.

For target shooting: I lean to .308 as its cheaper in the states. No idea about things up there though.

30-06 IS a more powerful round than .308. It has more case space to take heavier rounds for larger game and gets them going slightly faster. The whole ".308 is the same" thing came about because in decades past modern powders in the more compact .308 equaled or exceeded the older powders in the old-style 30-06 rounds. Some of that even goes on today. The 30-06 is a superior round when reloading for this very reason.
.308 is adequate for any north American large game within its effective range. What you gain from higher velocity cartridges like 300 mag is a flatter trajectory and more range.
I know I'm not capable of hitting a damn thing past 600 yards so I'm unconcerned about it. I've killed deer at 20 yards or less with a handgun. It depends on your type of hunting and where you're hunting. Deer and elk hunting in appalachia, there is no 600 yard shot. There's rarely a 200 yard shot. In the midwest I'm sure it's quite different, but if you're close enough, 308 will bring down anything.

Most people say to keep under 300yds for hunting and both have more than enough KE to take an elk.
