Johnson's all flip-floppy on how big of a mess we've got on out hands. Just because there wasn't much to investigate does not mean that the overall investigation isn't still ongoing. They can't close the case till they've got a conviction, and with it being the holiday season, the time needed to bust down your door and shoot your dog might take a little while longer than just a week.
Unless the gun shop brushed the whole ordeal under the rug, at a huge personal risk for themselves, the police had all they needed to arrest you days ago. Paperwork to give them permission to break into your house, shoot your dog and stack an additional charge of "resisting arrest" for trying to shield your face from their boots takes some degree of buerocracy--but I'd say you're far from out of the woods.
