For $500 you can get bubba'd yugo or chink sks. That's about it for intermediate semiautos.
If you're willing to step up to $600 plus shipping and transfer you can get yourself a nice WASR or an AR.

Separate person, but I remembered /k/ telling me that the 10/63s were better quality than the standard WASR 10s because of some quality assurance issues with the older WASR 10s. Has this flipped around?
Wasrs used to be in that range, all you can get now are hungarian AMD-65s. I don't know a lot about them. Check classicfirearms if you're interested
