Classical liberalism is what we need, in the vein of Enlightenment-era John Locke ideology. It would be considered right-leaning by the second definition, but in practice it is very liberal, as in liberty-minded, not as in liberal application of state solutions.
How about we cut this false dichotomy out of the picture and focus on what it really is: two corporate-owned authoritarian parties, and a handful of fringe candidates that are somewhat libertarian-leaning.
