Savage 110. Don't get a milsurp gun unless you reload and/or a collector/lover of history.

If you want a modern hunting rifle to put glass on, Ruger, Tikka, and Savage all make a quality inexpensive rifle.

Buy a nugget.
>>
>>28337202
What for?

A cheap plinker type would be best served with a nugget or some sort of .22 lr bolt action. Even at $200 the nugget is one of the cheapest rifles on the market.

Hunting rifle? There is just a flat out glut of good and cheap bolt actions for hunting. Again, consider a nugget. Ammo won't be as cheap because the surplus isn't as good for hunting as some JSPs. But again, the rifle would double as a hunting rifle and a cheap plinker with some surplus. Though you should consider that the nugget is pretty heavy compared to modern rifles. So you may not want it for hunting just based off of that.

Competition? Unless you are getting a nugget that was used for sniping (which are somewhere around $3,000 IIRC and there are lots of fakes), don't bother with a nugget. Depending on competition you'll want to get something like a mauser for competitions based on surplus rifles or really any modern bolt action for any other competition that requires bolt actions. These rifles can also all be used for hunting.

Chilean Mauser. 7mm Mauser is accurate as fuck. It's the round Karamojo Bell used to kill a thousand elephants.
>>
>>28338556
Many an elephant was killed with .303 but that doesn't really mean anything anon.
>>
>>28338568
It's still very flat shooting and accurate. Not too much recoil either. The rifles that shoot it are pretty inexpensive, too.
>>
Ruger M77

Dat controlled round feed, yo. American Mauser of the 21st century.
>>
just throwing this out there since it hasn't been mentioned, but check out enfields

some people really love them, especially those lucky enough to have jungle carbines
>>
>>28338708
Yeah I love mine but a SMLE will run about $400 and accuracy can be questionable depending on manufacturer and manufacture year.

As a warning some jungle carbines have a "wandering zero". Basically they can't hold a zero for shit. Never seen in myself, just read stories online and in magazines.
>>
Ignore all "muh nugget" shit posters. Those days are over and they were overrated even back when they were $100.
>>
>>28337258
This. And grab a battle pack of GP11 match ammo for it while it's still plentiful.

op, whatever you get, if it's milsurp

DO NOT

do anything to it the original, intended owner wouldn't have done to it. here's a pretty good example.

in case you can't tell anymore, it used to be a mosin.
>>
Get a Yugo m48, 24/47 or a neat south American Mauser. In fact any gun except the mosin and carcano will be nice.
>>
>>28338760
that's bullshit, you can tastefully improve a milsurp rifle
>>
>>28338760
Calm your tits. Outside of rare weapons OP should mod it however the fuck he wants.

Depending on OPs use the best will probably be a nugget. They are one of the cheapest rifles to buy and the surplus ammo is dirt cheap.

anything in your budget from savage arms

Modifications that don't permanently modify the gun are permissible if you hold onto original parts
>>
>>28338783
of course you can, if you care to actually READ what I typed:

>anything to it the original, intended owner wouldn't have done to it

I'm sure people in the 40's new how to refinish wood and repair canted sights. all I'm saying is that you should show the 80 year old rifle some respect and not stick polymer garbage all over it like some 12 year old that thinks everything can be improved with a flame paint job.
>>
>>28338760

This "you shouldn't Bubba a one in 300 million gun" meme needs to end, it's a mosin, not a 1 million dollar collectors piece.
>>
>>28338812
Putting a polymer stock wouldn't permanently modify it. You can hold onto original replaced parts for the collector value.

Drilling the receiver or bending the bolt handle--even for contemporary style optics

it's not about the gun you mongoloids

if we follow the example of the mosin, there's a pretty sizable chance that it's been in the hands of some russian conscript at some point in time.

it's not just a gun, it's a piece of living history, no matter how small or insignificant and people should take pride in that fact instead of tainting history with their garbage tastes.

tl;dr, fuck you, rifle is fine
>>
>>28338855
And not only that, but that attitude is what leads to things like $1200 Krags. Just leave the fucking gun alone. If you wanna fuck with one, buy one that's already been fucked with. Not that it'll do you any good, it'll still be a 2-4 moa rifle.

mauser action-based sporting rifle in a common caliber
>>
>>28337202
Buy a gun and you're safe from robbers, build a gun and you're safe from tyranny.

>but that's too hard, spending 1 hour on CAD and drilling 20 holes, 2 hours of sawing and filing your case and parts, is just too much thinking for my consumerist mind

If you're in a white state, buy guns on armslist, if you're behind enemy lines, build your own. Once you get it right you can make a guide and release the CAD file, make and sell 95% + parts kit, and give your family the ability to defend themselves from tyranny.

Own a fudd rifle or an AR so the government can come to your house and take it. Give them your registered gun, then use your home made gun to remove communism and arm your brothers.

Here are 10 or so basic building guides, you only need to read 1 or 2 for a fundamental understanding of how guns work. The smaller the caliber the simpler and cheaper you can make your rifle.

Why not just get a new production gun instead of a surplus rifle, then? In the end it'd probably be cheaper.
