If it's open, it's pretty safe, and anyone that can make out the gun's vague silhouette knows it.
It's a bit harder for an instructor to see other guns' safety/bolt positions while the gun's in someone else's hands, if angle/distance/lighting aren't favorable.
My first shotgun was an H&R Topper 88, still have it. When i went bird hunting the first time my dad gave me a 3 inch magnum buckshot which knocked me on my ass. Hurt like hell
