I'm in the market for a bolt action for general use and I'm torn between .308 and 30-06. Each of them costs the same price in my area so I just would like to know what the better round would be in a bolt action.

Which one is better for these 3 categories
>accuracy (target shooting)
>Man-stopper (SHTF)
>Beast Stopper (Hunting)

Also what is the largest and smallest animal you could practically hunt with each cartridge?
>>
>>28306107
30-06 is more versatile in terms of grain.

308 was made based off 30-06 to be able to carry more rounds per case, per truck etc.
>>
Depends on the distance. .308 is functionally the same within a certain range, but 30-06 had a better trajectory at a greater distance
>>
Ballistically speaking, they're nearly identical for the 3 terms you have listed.

If you're looking for help on which cartridge to decide on, get the 308win simply because it's the more modern cartridge and i seem to see more rifle chambered for it, and it's more widely available in common places like walmart.

One advantage to 308 is its shorter meaning smaller magazines, shorter action, and if I'm not mistaken some rifle can shoot the NATO equivalent of 7.62

>>28306107
>>28306150

I believe the primary difference is 7.62x51 is loaded to lower pressures, only reason I say that is because I've heard that the Ishapore 7.62 Enfields shouldn't be using commercial .308. That being said, nothing you should be worrying about in a bolt action rifle designed for .308
>>
>>28306107
Both perform about the same, .308 is cheaper though.
>>
>>28306107
>>accuracy (target shooting)
>>Man-stopper (SHTF)
>>Beast Stopper (Hunting)

Because of weight (including the long vs short action) .308 is best for the first 2, .30-06 edges it on the third.
>>
>>28306107

If you're going bolt action, might as well go .30-06. .30-06 is much more panic proof than .308. Also, if you eventually start reloading .30-06 is a great beginners cartridge to reload and can be made quite a bit hotter than .308 while keeping operating pressures down because of its huge case capacity.
>>
>>28306249
Read the OP

30-06 is also cheaper in my area OP, and to be honest it may get hate around here for being a fudd round, but just ignore it, it still generally performs better at range, and is widely available.
>>
>>28306356
You can have a fudd gun chambered in a fudd cartridge without being a fudd. I own an AR, an AK, an MPX SBR and a sawed-off shotgun. I also own some black powder guns, a few other bolt actions, single action revolvers, and am in love with lever guns. I have a purpose that I need a bolt gun to fill. Anyone who thinks I'm a fudd for that is a retard.
>>
>>28306282
I currently reload 9, .38, and .223. I wouldn't mind loading up some home-match ammo for either the .308 or 30-06.
>>
>>28306276
what animals would you hunt with a 30-06 that you likely wouldn't hunt with a .308?
>>
Eurofag here, planning on buying a Springfield M1903 or a Eddystone M1917, which one would /k/ recommend?
>>
>>28306421
30-06 can be loaded, safely, with much lighter, and much heavier pills than .308 can handle. So you can ethically take small varmints like ground hog, javelina, coyote, and the other spectrum, larger game like Elk and Moose. I forgot what the bullet grain and velocity ranges are, but .308 you pretty much have the standard velocity with 158 gr. With 30-06, I think it can safely use 90 gr to around 300 gr.

If hunting is out of the equation, .308 is ideal. If hunting deer, toss a coin. If hunting various species, 3006 is best.
>>
Also, for the lighter grain pills, and less powder loads, 30-06 can be loaded for pretty cheap compared to even mil surp 762 stuff. At least, it was yeeeears ago.
>>
>>28306485
I was unaware of the light and heavy loading for 30-06. I think I have made my decision, thanks.
>>
.308 is easier to find and military, 30.06 is muh fudd round and less likely to go OOS in the next election year rush.

You're not likely to notice any difference outside of very specific circumstances between the two.
>>
>>28306428

halp anyone?
>>
>>28306428
1903 for pure mericanism.
>>
>>28306563

yes but isn´t the 1917 a better gun in general?
>>
>>28306428
1917 m8, it can hold one more round. The action on the 1917 is much stronger and con shoot much hotter loads. 1903 is lighter. 1917 has better sights in my opinion.
>>
>>28306428
If you're going for a 1903 I would get a 1903A3 for better price, sights, safety, and availability. If price was really an issue though I would go with the 1917 simply for a good 30/06 for about half the price. From what I understand the 03A3 is more accurate but the 1917 is still plenty accurate. Go to local milsurp stores if you have any, I recently found a near mint 03A3 with matching serials for $600.

Also, what are the magazine laws for your country/area? The 6 round cap in the 1917 might be one round too much.
>>
308 is cheaper in bulk. There are also more loads available for target shooting. Only disadvantage is that 200-220gr factory loads are harder to find than 30-06, but they are out there.

Unless you're hunting fucking elk and moose, you don't need more than 175gr.

>SHTF
You're a moron. With that out of the way, get a semi-auto 308. You can get semi-auto 30-06s, but they are all shit unless you get a Garand. If you get a Garand, you'll pay too much and then get your thumbs cut off while trying to insert the clips.

There is no reason to buy a gun chambered in 30-06.

If you're shooting beyond 1000yd (I doubt you are) get a better cartridge.
>>
>>28307462
>If you get a Garand, you'll pay too much and then get your thumbs cut off while trying to insert the clips.
You are the moron
>>
>>28307363

Thanks for the information.
No capacity laws, I own an Enfield No 3 Mk1, too.
I like the idea of having an 1917, though. Just took a look at the difference in sights and I really like the sights of the 1917.

You've never shot a Garand if you think those clips are a good idea. Are they better than blind magazines? Only when concerned with rate of fire and nothing else

>hurr durr use irons like a real man
>hurr muh scout scope

Please, go shoot some guns before you run around acting like an idiot.
>>
>>28307531

Found an Eddystone M1917 here in Austria for about 350€ - rather used condition
good price in relation?
>>
>>28307462
I don't want a semi auto in either cartridge. For SHTF use Im talking using it as a long range rifle for use if I'm staying put somewhere, which with my area, bugging in is the best option. If I need to leave, Im leaving the bolt gun behind and grabbing my AK or AR.
>>
>>28307670
Why don't you move somewhere where you stay put and snipe all day long?
>>
>>28307566
>pretending to know everything about garands
YOu do realize it's an En Bloc magazine, yeah? That means it only shoots if the clip is loaded
>>
>>28306205
You can't put .308 in ishapores?
>>
>>28306528
.308 isn't military :^)
>>
>>28306107
if you load your own 30-06 it can be better and all categories
>>
>>28308148
I think .338 is though, to my understanding they're similar enough? My rifle cam with a kit to change between the 2
>>
>>28306107
.308 works best with lighter bullets
.30-06 works best with heavier bullets
>>
if you reload get a 30-06

if not 308
>>
>>28306107
30-06 can be loaded quite a bit hotter, and certainly has the case room to do so, while having a slightly longer bullet length. That said, the difference is minimal unless you take advantage of such.
>>
>>28308894
can load a heavier grain bullet too

no 220 grain bullet for 308
>>
>>28307531
No problem, good luck with whichever you choose, I'm sure they'll both serve you well.
>>
>>28306107
Whatever is cheaper to buy/feed in your area
>>
>>28307972
>implying you can't single load a Garand and press the follower down to release the bolt.

What are you even talking about? My father owns a Garand, I'm familiar with its operation. How is that even related to the fact that the bolt slams forward upon inserting the clip, thereby making it VERY easy to get your fingers caught in that bitch. Or that you can't mount a scope over the bore because you NEED to put the dumb ass clip in to shoot it normally?

>>28307670
>muh sniper fantasy
You must be 17.

Get a damn 308 for your 300 yard "long range".
>>
>>28309111
>the bolt slams forward upon inserting the clip, thereby making it VERY easy to get your fingers caught

The bolt is released when you stop applying pressure on the clip. The "garand thumb" you're describing happens when you forget to lock the bolt back all the way, so it's resting on the follower. Sounds like you just don't know how to operate the rifle.

Waste of trips desu senpai
>>
>>28306501
just for comparison .308s go as low as 120s and as high as 240s I've seen boxed for shooting cape buffalo and elephants... .308 and above will just just about anything if you use the right bullet.
>>
>>28306485
Came here to post this, you beat me to it.
>>
>>28306107
30-06 and .308 are going to be available prettymuch anywhere you go to buy ammo and are typically around the same price usually a dollar a round, less if you can find a good deal.
30-06 is heavier lead which makes a bigger hole in whatever you're shooting.
Neither of those rounds are ideal for HD since they'll both go through multiple walls and such. But I'd go for a socomII with the rounds that decentigrate if it was my option or opout for an AR10 like the Sig Sauer 716. Also you can hunt anything in the Americas with a 30-06 a .308 can too if you load your own rounds.
Alot of people will say .308 is this and that but it's usually what they've heard from COD.
Own a tikka t3 lite in 30-06 and its amazing, dont own a .308 yet so I get my info from reloading books.

why settle for an inferior round

unless 7mm mag is more expensive (and you dont want to reload), its a superior choice.
>>
>>28306107
>I'm in the market for a bolt action for general use
7mm-08, 243, 308 in that order. Why? Because you can build an AR-10 chambered in them.
>Each of them costs the same price in my area
Your area includes the internet so no, it doesn't. And if you are buying ammo as you need it you don't have enough money to own a hobby gun.
>the better round would be in a bolt action
I seriously doubt you have regular access to a 1000+ yard range, but see above.

>Which one is better for these 3 categories
>>accuracy (target shooting)
>>Man-stopper (SHTF)
>>Beast Stopper (Hunting)

You're talking about things like they're on a linear scale. Every cartridge has so many attributes you will need a good spreadsheet to make a choice.

Oh, and the correct answer is 25-06.
>>
>>28310985
why settle for inferior 7mm under 300 winmag?
>>
>>28308148
308 is military. the 308 winchester round is the 7.62x51 real fucking nato
>>
>>28306107
I just want to thank OP for making this thread and the people who responded. I was going to start a thread exactly like this as I am in the market for a hunting rifle for deer. Sounds like .30-06 is what I'll go with.
>>

>b-but my dad owns one I know everything

>>

7mm mag vs 300 win mag is far more subjective than 7mm mag vs 308/306.

(i could actually argue in favor of 7mm over 300 wind mag)
>>
>>28311244
I agree 300wm is closer to 7,=mm than either to 308/3006. Personally, I have a preference for winmag. Less drop by a fair amount out at the longer ranges as far as I can tell. Aside from that, fairly similar rounds overall...
>>
>>28311125

You just fell into the retard trap.
>>
>>28311244
why do you like the 7mm?
>>
>>28311244
The 7mm > 30cal when comparing like cartridges, Merica has had a 30cal fetish for over 100 years we should have jumped on the 280 bandwagon back when the British were pushing for it as the standard cartridge
>>
>>28311108
The only thing I agree with on this post is 25-06 but theyre expensive.
>1000+yard range.
What is zeroing your rifle.
>>
>>28311315
If you don't have regular access to a 1000 yard range then other factors become significantly more important in choosing a cartridge.

Really, though, the first sentence should have clued in on fuck boltguns.

Buy your ammo online in bulk when it's very cheap, not when you need it. If you're ever buying ammo when you need it you're doing it wrong.
>>
>>28311286
buying house innawoods

lots of crown (federal) land surrounding

can set up targets at a mile+

7mm out shines all .30 calibers by a noticeable measure at these distances.

i want to learn how to shoot at extreme ranges, but dont want to buy a .338 because its overkill for most hunting imo

its all about the challenge/hobby for me, developing the loads, minimizing the variance, running the numbers

7mm provides more challenges to address, its more engaging i would think (i could be wrong or exaggerating, i dunno)

the only time id prefer a 300 win mag is if i were shooting waterbufallo or elk at close range

but again even then, placement trumps dropping-power difference between the two
>>
>>28311309
>erica has had a 30cal fetish for over 100 years we should have jumped on the 280 bandwagon back when the British were pushing for it as the standard cartridge

i agree, but theoretically inefficiency cannot persist forever

the professional marksmen have pretty much all moved from .30 to .28, i could see 6.5 and 7mm being far more common in 100 years, maybe even more common than 308.

then again i guess the imperial system has stuck around (even though your scientists dont use it)

who knows.
>>
>>28311276
>I have a preference for winmag. Less drop by a fair amount out at the longer ranges as far as I can tell
pass 500 the 300 win mag starts dropping a lot more than 7mm.

max effective range for 300 win mag is 1300 meters, 7mm is 1700 meters.

the bc on 7mm is .625, on 300wm is .495

as i said earlier, 300wm only trumps 7mm at short range, under 500 meters. past that the tables turn
>>
>>28308002
Old enfields that were converted to .308 can't take the pressure. Especially when you start talking about hot loads. You can get newer variants that can take the pressure. They're just about $3000. They are known as L42A1.
>>
>>28311581

7mm Rem Mag
>>
>>28306107
if you reload, 30-06, no question. if you don't reload .308. if you do reload,a great yet slightly harder to find option would be 280 Remington. It's the 06 necked down to 7mm. that will probably be the next rifle I build.
>>
>>28311652
That's wrong though you asshat

The ishapores were built specifically from the ground up for 7.62, they weren't converted
>>
>>28306356
Who cares? You wouldnt call a guy who has all the scary intermediate calibers of the AR and AK and supports them all the while also interested in the "fudd" stuff.
Fuck. If you like guns, you give everything a chance.
>>
How about this. Since most bolt action rifles are more or less the same price regarding the gun, whats the more "poorfag friendly" in regards to ammo if one does not reload?
>>
>>28312321
I meant in regards to .308 or 30-06 rifle in price.
>>
>>28312321
That'll be 308.

If youre gonna be super poorfag you can shoot steel case / zqi brass case ammo for under 50 cents per round.

If you want hunting ammo itll be close to a buck a round or so for the remington core lokt stuff.

If you want match ammo you can spend roughly 1 buck per round. up to 1.25 per round, if you pay more than that before shipping you are paying too much.

If you want even cheaper match ammo look at australian outback 168smk for $0.75 per round, but they haven't had that in a while.

>Fuck bolt actions
Yeah, go fuck yourself.

The .308 Winchester and the 30-06 are functionally equivalent. They were both designed to shoot a 147 grain projectile at 2700 feet per second muzzle velocity. Where the difference shows up is in heavier bullets. Both the 06 and .308 will handle 180 grain projectiles but you have to start seating the 180 grain bullet deeper into the case. With a deeper seated bullet you have less room for powder. Also a heavier bullet requires a slightly slower burning powder. the .308 will handle 200 grain projectiles but the velocity will be low and have the trajectory of a rock. The 06 will handle bullets up to 220 grain projectiles with ease at a muzzle velocity of 2400 feet per second. I have taken a bore Griz in Alaska with a custom bolt action M1903 Springfield with a 22 inch barrel shooting Sierra round nose 220 grain projectiles. The 220 grain out of an 06 is adequate for any animal up to 1400 lbs at ranges up to 300 yards.
>>
>>28306107
Around here, .308 seems to be available year-round while .30-06 is only in good supply during hunting season. Even though they're basically the same price.

I like .308 better, if only for the shorter bolt throw and greater variety of firearms that eat it.
