Hello /k/. I am looking for an affordable .357 revolver that doesn't suck scrotum. I have a budget of up to 450 US dollars, and would prefer something at least somewhat reliable. Please toss me some suggestions. I dislike snub noses.

Used GP100

>>28292981
get a police trade in Model 10 if you want a .38
Great guns for less than 400 as long as you dont mind holster wear
>>28292893
as for .357
Ruger GP100 of S&W 586 / 686
Im looking at getting one of these 2, leaning towards the 586
>>
>>28292893
Might be able to find a used Model 28 like mine in that price range, or a 27.
>>
you can probably find a used ruger sp101 for that price; ruger revolvers are known for durability
if not a new windicator is around that price
>>
>>28293091
I've heard windicators tend to get problems after a few hundred rounds

A GP100 is a good place to start like the others have said, although old 10s, 19s, and 13s can be had for about that price. Pic related was snapped up for $450.
>>
>>28292893

I say look for an S&W Model 13 or 19. Once you feel a classic S&W nothing else will do.
>>
not op, but are rossis any good?
there was a guy near me with one for 300 bucks
>>
>>28293497

I would stay away. I've heard those are hit or miss, but revolvers can be really touchy with timing and shit. I would just spend 50 bucks more and get a model 10
>>
>>28293497
Rossi makes an alright lever action clone, but their revolvers are pretty iffy. Especially when Rugers aren't much more.
>>
>>28293392
Are the hardwood grips on the GP100 good ergonomically? It's a pretty sexy piece all told
>>
>>28293560
>>28293544
alright, thanks dudes
I wasn't really in the market for a 357 anyway, just saw it and thought it might be a cheap gun to have fun with. I would prefer 44 magnum anyway, like a redhawk or something.

That is a S&W 19-2, nothing beats the sexiness of old S&W wheel guns. Not even Pythons or Korths IMO. But otherwise, the grips are alright. Nothing amazing, rubberized ones will grip and deal with recoil better.

Count me as another vote for the GP100

fug maybe ill buy one of those during the heat of election season

oregon nogunz reporting

between spookwalkers/crackheads, i want to get training and good guns. i want simple, clean, dependable protection- im leaving towards a shotgun and a revolver. i can put away about 500 a month, and have about 1500 now.

what buy?
>>
>>28296810
I used to think a wheelgun was the way to go.
But new autos are easier to conceal and have double the capacity.
If you want DAO, buy a striker fired auto.
IMO buy one of the several good DA/SA autos with a decocking lever and have the most options in how you carry, in the caliber of your choosing.
>>
>>28293602

maybe it's just the fact they are shitty hogue rubber, but i hate the rubber grips on my 629. i need some fancy wood grips like those.
>>
>>28296854
OP here, a big part of my desire for a revolver is that I go camping a great deal, and having a firearm able to ward off wildlife would be nice. I know 357 is on the lower end for that sort of thing, but I prefer it over something heavier that I might not be able to use effectively.

This was $250 and only another $70 more for the new grips and speed loaders. A police trade in .38 is a great way to figure out how you feel about revolvers as a beginner and then buy something more expensive to suit your needs later on.

Bore is in great shape and it's accurate as hell. It's worn on the outside though.

What's the best place to look for police trade-in .38s?

S&W makes the best production guns period.
I'm not counting Korth and the like.

Hear me.
There is no better looking gun than a 6" python with those grips. >>28295130
I'd prefer blued but regardless, it's aesthetic perfection. Seriously, it's perfect.
That doesn't mean that Colt made the best functioning or most solid, reliable, nicest shooting guns ever though. You have to pull back on the cylinder release as opposed to pushing forward on the Smith, that's a disadvantage even if a small small and furthermore, nothing about any other aspect of the gun, except looks is superior to the S&W.
Rugers too are mostly ugly. Yes there are a few exceptions. Rugers also won't let you spin the cylinder via the ejection rod, what a bummer.

You know, it's not like Smiths are ugly either.

Police trade revolvers avail. most of the year from AIM Surplus, JGSales, Summit Gun Broker. Also call your LGS and tell guy to keep his eye peeled and to call you when some come in!

Check gun shows. Yours would need n frame square butt most likely. Grip style is the wide target grip with a half moon cut. There are no cut and football cut as well. A nice set will run you $80-150. If you just want the modern smith and Wesson rosewood grips you can get them from their website.

Pic related, the k frame version on my model 13-4

Ive got your answer. Any other is blowing farts out of their mouth.
> Ruger Security Six
> used Gp100
> any smith used .357
> taurus (wheelguns are actually acceptable, but id put them at the bottom of your list)
People will talk shit on taurus, but on the whole their revolvers arent bad at all truly. Especially their older ones.
>>
>>28302061
Shouldnt have to say this but k is k, so rossis are decent too. Made by taurus though.

I had a Rossi revolver once, but it would actually jam periodically.

Sometime about the timing or somesuch got easily hosed-up, and prevented the cylinder from advancing (or either double, or single-action) until you opened it up and advanced it manually. Was using regular factory loaded .38 and .357, didn't matter which.

Rossi is Taurus' budget label, so... I think that might explain some things.

Never had an issue with a Taurus-brand revolver, and I've had a couple of them over the years. Never bought another Rossi, though, so I dunno if that was just the one I had, or if it was a known issue with them.

That's my Rossi anecdote; make of it what you will.
>>
>>28302207
I have an older rossi 971 in .357 and have never had any issues like you describe. No work done to it other than lighter springs and regular cleaning and lubing.

Timing, etc. is really easy to fix either way. I would never let that keep me from buying one seeing as most of those parts are $5-20 tops. Same thing with S&W. They're very easy to work on and the parts are very simple so long as you don't lose any of the smaller things like the pins (work in an area that is easy to find things and keep them in a magnetic bowl).

As someone who also owns 3 S&Ws, I would recommend a rossi if you were looking for something cheaper that can also shoot well. You can get used 971s like mine for around $200-250.
>>
Okay, so what do I look for when buying used? I am no gun expert, and don't know what to look for to avoid buying a lemon. What parts are most susceptible to failure?
>>
>>28302856
I would buy in person preferably so that you can check for things that usually go wrong on revolvers.

>timing
>grit in the trigger
>cylinder movement
>cylinder rod
>etc.

Most if not all issues are not big deals, but you can use them to get the price down. If the trigger is smooth and the cylinder locks up when you pull the hammer back (doesn't move still afterwards or wiggle back and forward excessively) then you are usually good to go.

Here's a basic video to use. Works with all double action revolvers really.
