Maybe they know the constitution is too big of a stumbling block so they are just trying to get prices high enough to act as a sort of pay wall to gun and ammo ownership.
Its a known fact that most advocates for gun control arent anti gun, they are anti poor people with guns (surround themselves with armed guards, california's state government that enacts some of the countries most draconian gun laws and refuse to budge on them also passed a bill exempting state legislature members from these laws, and automatically authorizes them for concealed carry etc etc).
