Well fuck me sideways, we're running out of bombs to bomb the suicide bombers.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/04/politics/air-force-20000-bombs-missiles-isis/index.html

Or is this just a ploy by the military industrial complex for more shekels?

What do /k/?

I think currently we manufacture something like 500-600 Hellfires per month.

If we're using more than that per month Jesus Christ we're really bombing the hell out of them.

Just bring back arclite strikes from B-52s with old iron bombs.

This seems to be less of a "we're literally out of missiles and bombs" situation, and more of a situation where they're projecting a shortage in the future if they don't ramp up production.

That's complete fucking bullshit. Nobody else in the world has anything close to the US stockpile of PGMs.

The article is just the USAF justifying the increase in procurement in 2016 (see pic). Note that what Walsh says is not "running out" it's "below desired objective." That just means the USAF wants zero impact on their stockpile.

Using hellfires to blow up random towelheads & their technicals is hilarious overkill.

The army should field the APKWS. Basically you screw a guidance system onto your cheapass old HYDRA 70 rockets (or similar ordnance) and turn it into a cheap and effective Hellfire replacement.

Of course, the hellfire has a place to blow up tanks and bunkers, but a Hydra 70 is plenty to fuck with terrorists & insurgents.

Any helicopter, UAV or plane outfitted to guide Hellfires can be retrofitted to fire APKWS equiped Hydra 70s. Bonus is that you can carry 4 Hydra 70 for each Hellfire that you used to have. Means light drones have more ammo.

APKWS + Hydra 70 = $28,500 + $1,000 = just shy of $30,000 in current production (bound to go down in mass production)
Hellfire = $110,000 in current production (already mass produced)

(actual Hellfire cost is higher according to >>28088083 too, so that's even worse)

So basically, you can carry 4 APKWS in the place of each Hellfire, at the cost of 4 vs 1 on unit price as well.

You can load them into standard Hydra 70 pods, or just keep your Hellfire rack and mix & match as you see fit with the tiny 4 unit launcher.

I bet drone pilots creamed their jumpsuit.
>>
>>28088181
Could this also be fitted to CVR7 rockets (what Canada & UK use)??
>>
>>28087531

>Moar money for dem air force programs
>>
>>28088238
CVR7 has its own laser guided version. and in addition to APWKS there's also 2 other different types of guided Hydras, DAGR and LOGIR.
>>
>>28088181
You'd want DAGR instead of APKWS then. It's compatible with Hellfire launchers, so you can just fire them from Reapers and Predators with no fuss. It's also got LOAL.
>>
>>28088083
No doubt when the war on ISIS winds down procurement will not correspondingly decrease, but tha's the military-industrial complex for you.
>>
>>28088198
>Range and altitude deficiencys nigga.
>They are not a direct replacement.

Of course not since they don't have the exact same role.
APKWS Range: 1,100–5,000 m (rotary wing); 2–11 km (fixed wing)
Hellfire Range: 7,000-8,000 m

But for what we use to blast durkas? It's a friggin' perfect fit.

>>28088238
>Could this also be fitted to CVR7 rockets (what Canada & UK use)??

Since they're basically 2.75" missiles, it should be possible, though it might require minor differences in manufacture.

Also, the CVR7-PG already does most of what you want it to do. Only it's more expensive IIRC.

>>28088258
>DAGR and LOGIR.

There's GATR-L, LOGIR, CVR-PG, SNEB, Ugroza, etc. But atm, APKWS II appear to be coming out on top. BEA beat Lockheed Martin and Raytheon for the program, though obviously the competition isn't giving up that easily and is trying to peddle their own alternatives.
APKWS will be able to use the new 13.7 pound M822 tri-mode penetrating/blast/incendiary warhead, which can punch through 40″ of reinforced concrete or 1″ of steel, while creating over 1,500 fragments and a 2,000F degree zirconium burn. Thus even making it viable against more hard targets.

>>28088259
>You'd want DAGR instead of APKWS then. It's compatible with Hellfire launchers, so you can just fire them from Reapers and Predators with no fuss.

So? Same thing with the APKWS II.

>It's also got LOAL.

At a higher price tag. Which is exactly what they're trying to keep down with this program.
>>

There is no APKWS I, its called APKWS.

The continuation is II, which is still in development.
>>
Interesting fact though, in terms of actual bombs rather than guidance kits, for FY16 the USAF is ordering about 4 times as many 2000lbers as 500lbers. So those F-15Es and B-1s are certainly getting work done.
>>
>>28088438
>There is no APKWS I, its called APKWS.
>The continuation is II, which is still in development.

That's a nope nope.

It's currently in full production since the previous delivery to Jordan. They bought 110 units for their CN-235 gunships.

Look it up. Production units are currently rolling out of the factory. Development will obviously carry on, but they're in full scale production now.
>>
>>28088475
>It's currently in full production since the previous delivery to Jordan. They bought 110 units for their CN-235 gunships.

Nope, upon further reading they got the APKWS.

US actually meet IOC with the APKWS II, but is not exporting it.

And he is right, if autistic. There is no APKWS I.

AGM-114B/C Basic Hellfire
AGM-114D/E Basic Hellfire
AGM-114F Interim Hellfire

AGM-114R Hellfire II (Hellfire Romeo)[31]
AGM-114S Hellfire II
AGM-114T Hellfire II

I guess Defense Industry Daily is wrong then, I'll have to take your word over theirs. It's not like their title says APKWS II is in production or anything.

The APKWS II reached IOC in 2013, of course it is in production anon.

And yes it is pedantic, but also correct. its arguable that there are only a few variants of hellfire actually in use.

And in addition to this you can throw in 2000 SDBs and 6000 Paveways (Paveway kits aren't listed as a single piece in the budget, but the MAU-209 is part of the laser guidance and so that number translates into the total number of kits)

I would assume that we are using up some of our older stocks of weapons, first in first out kinda like rotating a groceries store stock.

I know during this specific operation DDG 52 Barry and DDG 55 Stout, both late 80's vintage ships, launched most if not all of their on board Tomahawks into Libya.

Since it's the first time either of these ships and fired their weapons in anger I assume they were still carrying their original load out of tomahawks.

I know most PGMs only have a finite shelf life so I assume just like then we are using up the old weapons before they expire and now asking for newly manufactured ones (with a longer shelf life) to replace them.

Shekels!

Could someone refresh my memory? Didn't Obama try to zero out Hellfire purchases a year or two ago? Or was that TLAM?
>>
>>28088811
That's broadly true. However USN keeps its Tomahawks kept on board relatively up to date. The old ones are taken off and then stockpiled waiting for complete rebuilds to restore their service life and bring them back up to date. They have so many in fact the plan a year or two was to stop new procurement completely for several years and just rely on rebuilding old ones. The Middle East blowing up and Congressional lobbying nixed that plan so now they'll do both.

>>28088908
Both. Note that the Hellfire was only going to be stopped for the Army in anticipation of JAGM, the USAF was always going to keep buying more. Neither went through.
>>
This is just the AOR stockpile, not the entire US arsenal. Of course they just want money.

Where are you getting the 20,000 number from? The CIA, who lowballs/underplays the numbers of ISIS soldiers at 35,000, and there is some speculation that the number is of course, much, much higher. Like, 200,000 high. It's hard to quantify enemy combatant when they mingle with the locals as much as they do. On the othe hand, I'd like to think we're making the most of our ordinance by using it on vehicles and groups, and not just individuals. Drone strike footage kinda indicates that this isn't the case, and we ARE wasting the good stuff on lone retards.
