Is there any reason that it would be unsuccessful/unsafe to handload a 7.62x63mm or 7.62x51mm bullet in a .300 Win Mag (7.62x67mm) casing to fire in a .300 Win Mag rifle? If the diameter is the same (7.62mm), and it's in the proper case for the bolt, chamber, bore, etc, shouldn't it be just fine?
>>
>>28059741
so you want to put a smaller lighter bullet into a bigger case.

first thing. not all 7.62/.30 cal bullets are the same diameter.

second. too much rifling twist on too light a bullet will cause it to fly apart.
>>
I'm not talking about a 7.62x39 or a .300 BLK in a .300 Win Mag case. Really just a 7.62x63 or x51. Barrel would be 26" with a 1x10" twist.

>I don't know a single thing about reloading

Nice thread.
Load can load any .308 bullet into a case that uses .308 bullets so long as its appropriate length and seating depth.

>unironically calling Ball Cartridge .30 Caliber 1906, 7.62x63

Dude what the fuck
>>
The only reasons I can think of for doing this are for VERY long distance shooting or defeating body armor.

....OP, what are you planning?

lol I'm just kidding.

You might want to use a faster burning powder typically meant for pistol use though, and play with the loading a bit so you don't shoot fireballs. Maybe crimp the case twice as hard as you usually would if you don't want to do all that. The lighter bullets have less mass and would exit the barrel before the powder charge was completely burned.

>>28059942
Don't make gross generalizations about internal ballistics.
>>
>>28059795
Ya on thin jacketed bullets travelling at 4000fps through a 1-9 or faster.

I doubt you'll get that kind of speed out of a 300 wmag

>>28059741

Buy the Lee loading manual, gives good info on generalized bullets. I'm assuming your pulling leads from surplus to save costs? Jus mic the bullets and make sure they Come up at .308 every time. And don't use the powder from x51 or x62 either. Mystery powders are a big no no if you like your face fingers and guns.
>>
>>28059942
Don't listen to this. If you try to load rifle powder quantities of pistol powder you'll fuck yourself badly.
>>
>>28059992

If he's using a shit rifle, yea. The thread is about testing handloads. I just wanted him to know that if he's using the same powder and charge weight BUT he's using a bullet that weighs less, he might shoot fireballs.

>>28059952

Vague thread, vague responses.
>>
>>28060127
Uhh if he's using a good rifle 65+grains of something like blue dot is going to fuck his shit up horribly.

In burnt powder would be the least of his worries. Detonation from a light load would be my biggest concern.

>Not calling it .30-03 Improved

>>28060183
He could safely use pistol powder by not using as much. Start light and work his way up.
>>
>>28060225
How lightly do you think? I've a rough idea. If he goes to light it's bad too. Are you just a guessing or do you actually know?
>>
>>28059741
IIRC, russian 7.62 bullet dia's are slightly different than NATO spec, or 300/308 win

this

Sure is /b/ in here today...

OP get a loading manual, or ten, and follow published data. Don't guess, don't deviate. Don't be the guy with half a face.

>not calling it .30 Government '06

>>28059741
Not OP but if I wanted to make flash bullets would adding some left over magnesium powder to the gun-powder while loading make the muzzle flash bigger / brighter? (Not to the point of filling the casing but putting just enough to make a difference)

No. Dont. Unless you hate your gun

If you load pistol/shotgun powder in standard amounts into any rifle you'll lock up your bolt at best and kill yourself at worst. I would only ever use pistol powder in a rifle for making subsonic loads.

Pistol/shotgun powder goes through complete combustion way faster than rifle powders so you'll get a much faster pressure spike. If you keep pushing in pistol powder trying to raise your speed, the pressure spike is going to grenade your chamber before you reach a satisfactory velocity.

There's no chance you'll be able to get satisfactory performance out of a rifle cartridge like that using the incorrect powder.

If I absolutely had to, I'd start at 10% of the rifle load with pistol powder and work my way up, but I would never expect to shoot beyond 100m with the wrong powder. Without the bullet twisting the right speed you might get key holing at even short ranges too, just use the right powder.

30 cal bullets are typically .308 diameter, loading for a mosin typically uses .310 -.312 since glorious rifle is made with "loose" tolerances for reliability. I wouldn't see a problem with pulling bullets from another 30 cal as long as they were 308, but too heavy or too light bullets will fly weird and may keyhole.
>>
>>28059870
Yes, both of those are still .308" bullets.

There are FACTORY 125gr .300wm loads, and commercially-published 110gr loads. Most .300wm are 1:10 or 1:11 barrels so you literally cannot over spin any non-KB load.

.300wm is EXTREMELY versatile. 110-265gr bullets at anywhere from 2600-3400fps.
>>
>>28059795
Just because it's a different caliber doesn't make them lighter bullets. I used to reload 200 gr .40's until I figured out my XD-40 doesn't like lead, well I can get some 200 Gr .45 too.
>>
>>28060127
>OP loads 65gr of Red Dot or Universal Clays or Bullseye or Unique or [literally every other pistol or shotgun powder] in his .300wm behind [anything]
>every .300wm chambered firearm will detonate like he'd packed the barrel with Comp-B
>because chamber pressures would be in the 450,000+ PSI range prior to rupture
There's a reason a normal charge for Bullseye in a .45acp (230gr bullet) is 5gr. NOT 65gr
>>
>>28060217
but...it's not .30-03 Improved.

Because that's a different caliber, specifically an Ackley derivation of the .30-03 with a 40 degree shoulder that's been pushed back to yield a longer neck and enable shooting 200+gr cast LRN without impacting case capacity.
>>
>>28060368
Well, the default subsonic load for .30-06 is a 147gr M80 pull over 5.0gr Red Dot. Very quiet, powder is bulky enough to prevent detonation.

If he's trying to go supersonic, something like Blue Dot in the ~15gr range will almost fill the case and yield somewhere around 1800fps, but be near or at max pressure because it's still way the fuck too fast.
>>
>>28060408
Correct. Russian "30 caliber" is .310"
British 30 "caliber" is either .311 or .312, there was some variance between the years.
This is because they measure stated caliber/bore diameter from the top of the land.

American/SAAMI/CIP "30 caliber" is .308"
This is because they measure bore diameter from the bottom of the groove (land-to-land is .300" or "true" .30 caliber)
>>
>>28063709
I don't know where you're getting your info about loading for the Mosin, because you are either talking out of your ass or don't know about bore diameter. Mosins use .311-.312 projectiles because the 7.62x54R uses a .311 bullet. 7.62x54R uses bullets measured out to the bore diameter, like same as the 303 British.

yes
>>28063830
my ass talking seems pretty close, are you getting bent about .01 in?
>>
>>28065437
loading a .308 bullet into a rifle whose bore is .311 generally leads to less than optimal accuracy. Also, math is not your strong suit.
