Russia would never invade only Finland without extreme provocation. The only feasible reason they would do that without Finland doing something to absolutely deserve it is to use it as a staging ground for the rest of Europe. But they wouldn't do that because that would be foolish. By the time Finland fell Europe/U.S. would be fully mobilized and ready to rumble like no other war machine in the history of mankind.
NATO units would be mobile and out of garrison ready to take on missile and aircraft threats as best they're able. It would reduce the effectiveness of Russia's greatest tool by a considerable amount, a short notice or surprise nuclear strike on military infrastructure.

What would probably happen is a series of calculated attempts to destabilize and deplete Russia's resources. Nobody wants all out war with the Russians because that is a no-win scenario. Large arms shipments would make their way into Finland to support defence and the asymmetric war that it would become. Russia's efforts in Syria would come under attack. This would take the form of mass support for Jihadists targeting the regime, any by extension Russia's interests in the region. The notion that steps would be taken to import a huge amount of weapons and foreign fighters into the caucasus is not a far fetched idea at all. It is also not a bad idea taking into account the considerable drain on resources which conflicts in that region have proved to be in the past. You would see a literal fuckton of sanctions imposed upon Russia's economy. Russia is not in the best state financially right now and this could be devastating for them. There is much more that could be done to sabotage Russia's interests globally but those are just a few. It also helps that Finns are fucking crazy so unless Russia bulldozed the entire country really quickly it would end up being a pretty dirty fight.

By choosing to not go into all out war with Russia they could commit serious resources to aiding all of the many small fights that would spring up. This is not a new concept, see the entire cold war. Both countries put immense amounts of money into funding the 'bad guys' each was fighting. This is a favourite tactic that the US has used against countless adversaries. Supporting armed insurrection for the purpose of destabilizing a government has been going on for decades and has been a way for the US to extend their global interests.
