improved CLS, better equipment, smarter retards.
Vietnam and WWII soldiers were draftees. Not necessarily a bad thing but it wasnt like the Army was looking for the best of the best.
Todays Army being "easier" than it used to be is a baby boomer meme. Old soldiers cant hold a candle to modern soldiers

Other countries did it as well. There were Model 98 training riles in 22 lr, and frankly- more trigger time makes a better shooter- period.
