Is the .44 magnum still the most powerful handgun in the world?

Dirty Harry seems to think so.

I suppose it was back then, but not anymore.

At the time of the movie the .44 Magnum was the most powerful, commercially available handgun round. Handloaders had been experimenting and had created more powerful and wildcats but they weren't commercially available. Now those some of those handloads and wildcats are commercially available.

isn't it "canon" he shot 44 specials out of them for uncontrollably or was it SPECIAL as in his own special magnum rounds that killed 70s fools?
>>
>>28042211
So this caused a lot of new gun owners to buy the 44 magnum right? Was this the first one or was every kid buying leer actions and single action and 38s from cowboy and detective movies during the 50s?
>>
>>28042211
No, at the time the most powerful commercially available handgun round was .454 casull.

>>28042277
He shot .44 special for the competition load (described in the conversation in Magnum Force) but it's not clear whether he carried those loads on duty.

It's the most powerful handgun you could feasibly carry.

So my question to /k/ is this.

If the .44 can blow a head clean off, can the 500 blow a body clean in half?

Too bad the Model 29 Clint Eastwood was using was actually shooting .45lc blanks instead of .44 magnum.
>>
>>28042211
It wasn't the most powerful handgun in the world when he said it. It was the most powerful regular production handgun in the world until the introduction of the .50AE Desert Eagle .500 S&W is the current King of the Magnums..
>>
>>28047623
No, but you could blow a body clean off.

I knew a gunship owner (she retired last year and closed the store) who said they sold a lot of Model 29s when Dirty Harry came out. Many of them to no guns or people who had only shot a .38 or 9mm. She said a lot of them came back with six rounds fired and otherwise practically new.

.454 Casull didn't become commercially available until the introduction of the Ruger Super Redhawk and Taurus Raging Bull in the late 1990's.
>>

What a bunch of bitches, I sold my .44 so I could trade up to a .454, also I bought a deagle so having two .44s seemed a bit redundant.

Most of the beauty shots were using a Model 25 in .45 Colt. It had bigger holes and looked more intimidating.

Beretta 92 was stupid popular when Die Hard came out. It's dubious if Die Hard any effect on H&K P7 sales. I personally want a Colt Detective Special because all the classic TV detectives carried one. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
>>
>>28048638
Did Die Hard do anything for AUG sales? It's why I bought mine.
>>
>>28048652
I bet it did, I don't know how I forgot about it. I'm sure it's been overshadowed today by computer games with the AUG though.

Not arguing. It's the same thing as a Nogunz Cawadoody buying a gold tigerstripe Deagle and finding out they bought way to much gun.

I have several .44s, including a MkXIX Deagle. I ended up getting a .50 barrel for it. I'm thinking about a .454. I'm torn between a Super Redhawk and the new Super Blackhawk Bisley.

Western in the 50's revived single actions. Colt stopped making the SAA when WWII started and didn't resume production after. In the 1950's there was a surge in popularity of single actions with the cowboy craze. Bill Ruger capitalized on it by building the .22 Single Six and .357 Magnum Blackhawk. Colt saw his success and resumed production of the SAA.

Fun fact, Ruger somehow got a sample of .44 Magnum, either a loaded case or empty and developed the .44 Magnum Blackhawk. They beat S&W to the market with a .44 Magnum revolver. In fact, until Dirty Harry, the S&W Model 29 was fairly low production compared to the Blackhawk.

He said they were "light specials." According to the director, he was meant to say "light magnums" or something to the effect of a lighter handload. They were still magnums
