Can someone enlighten me on Night Vision Goggles? What are the need to know basics?

I'm curious how exactly you're supposed to use fuckhueg goggles sticking off your helmet and still make use of your rifle's optics, unless you have irons only. Also, how good is Gen 1 and 2 really? I have absolutely no legitimate use for the things but I kind of want to blow a tax return on them anyway just because I'm a fucking american.
>>
Good luck, they are very illegal.
>>
>>28037509
>and still make use of your rifle's optics
You don't. You use IR lasers and lights.

Are you fucking retarded? Night vision goggles are not illegal.
>>
>>28037509
If you want to use nvgs and optics go nvg on non dominant eye, red dot on dominant eye.

Or pony up for clip on.

Otherwise, yeah, IR laser
>>
>>28037538
In America, where OP lives, they are.
>>
>>28037548
Where the fuck in America do you live where nvgs are illegal?
>>
>>28037523
>>28037544
Ohh, I see now, I just assumed the IR was for getting a better picture at night rather than pointing the way directly.
>>
>>28037555
You could get an IR light to light everything up, or an IR laser to aim.

Not sure if trolling, or just retarded. NVGs are not illegal or regulated in the US. You can order a pair right now if you want.

PVS7B goggles can be had for $3300 or so. They are gen 3.
>>
>>28037570
That seems expensive, I thought PVS14s were about that much?
>>
>>28037509
If you're going to get night vision, save your shekels and get gen 3. Buy yourself a PVS-14 for 2k and enjoy nice clear views.

Gen 1 is garbage, like the night vision mode on old video cameras. Gen 2 is passable, but not terrific.
>>
>>28037570
It chapes my chaps that gen 4s are so secretive that the military blurs pictures of operators with them.
>>
>>28037582
Well the PVS 14 is a monocle. Plus prices on something this expensive can fluctuate wildly.
>>
>>28037598
You can buy even the secret squirrel quad sensor ones if you have $30k to burn. I dunno why they blur pics or even if they still do.
>>
>>28037666
Those down to $30k already? They were 60 the last I checked.
>>
>>28037570

>monocular

Those things fuck with your depth perception?
>>
>>28037630
The fact that it's a monocle doesn't make any difference. The pvs 7 only has one tube, just like the 14, so you get no depth perception in either case. The 14 is lighter, comes with variable gain, and can be mounted on a weapon.
>>
>>28037682
Well, your cheapest option for a dual tube would be to get two 14s and a double mount. Or you could get a mortgage for a set of 21s
>>
>>28037682
Yes. With an actual monocular, if it isn't too dark out you can at least get binocular vision by using your other eye and melding the images. On a single-tube binocular set, you get no depth perception AND both eyes are taken up.

I have a PVS-14 Gen 3

I use my Aimpoint PRO on setting 1 to shoot at night.

Don't fuck with Gen 1, it's a flatout waist of money.

Gen 2 is a start, Ok for the buck

Gen 3 is fucking sweet titties.
>>
>>28037739
wtf is the point of the bungies on the arc rails?
>>
Are there any comfortable mounting options for a pvs 14 that don't need a helmet of some sort? I hear the standard skullcrusher strap assembly is awful.

no 7.62 for PVS-14s
>>

I personally thought it was to tether the NOD to the helmet. But its not, I've seen picks of SOF dudes using them to retain their Low drag High speed goggles. I just leave em so I don't loose them.

>>28037759
You can buy a cheapo ProTec bike helmet and screw a nvg mount to it. Skullcrushers are fucking suck.

Why though? Ops core makes specific google swivels for the arc rails. There must be a reason and I cant find out. I recently ordered a set of knock off rails for my MICH and hope they fit, they didnt come with bungies so I wasnt sure if I was missing out on something.

They are stabilizer bungies for using shitty as fuck USGI rhino arms + j arms with a PVS-14.

It basically anchored the Nod so they won't move much in the mount, and acted as a secondary lanyard in case it detached so it may catch it before it hits the ground

Until I joined the Army, I thought you could use irons with NODs. Was I wrong! You can mount your PVS 14 to the gun though and use it that way. Behind or in front of the optic. If you have a helmet mounted NOD, you use a PEQ-15 which has modes for IR laser, IR/Red Laser, and IR laser/IR flashlight.

>I'm curious how exactly you're supposed to use fuckhueg goggles sticking off your helmet and still make use of your rifle's optics, unless you have irons only.

You don't use irons with NODs. NODs have to focus, somewhat like a camera lense. They can't look through irons without everything being blurry.

*Usually* you don't use optics with them either. Most night time shooting uses IR lasers, or looking through an optic with your non-NOD wearing eye.

PVS-14s can be mounted to rifles, but this is extremely rarely done, as the main advantage of NODs is night manueverability, and you lose that when you stick your NODs to a rifle.

Under very unusual and specific circumstances, some units will mount red dots far forward on rifles allowing them to be shouldered while the shooter wears NODs. This is not done often though, and most close quarters fighting is done with quick bursts of whitelight from weaponlights.

>fuckhueg goggles sticking off your helmet
They don't feel so fuckhuge if you have good helmet straps and a solid mount.

>Also, how good is Gen 1 and 2 really?
Very grainy. Anything less than generation 3 feels like a huge hassle to work with.

>>28037759
There are some, but helmets are the best way. If you're wearing NODs, just pull out a helmet that is good to use them. Skullcrushers and caps exist, but those sacrifice comfort for small size.

>>28037800
>>28037765
Bungie cords have a long history of being used to steady NOD mounts or NOD arms. Pic related of some Rangers using a more traditional DIY bungie set up. The new, fancy helmets have some built in bungies for assurance, though they aren't really as needed, since the fancy helmets usually come with sturdy mounts. The bungies on the new helmets also work as a mounting point for a mini d-ring used as a dummycord, I guess.

Different sets of bungie cords are also used for stuff like goggles. Bungie is pretty versitile.
>>
>>28040716

A good gen 2 isn't shitty or that grainy except in very low light conditions. Just use a IR torch in those cases anyway.

I have some cell phone potato quality pics I'll try to dig up. Hold on

Sorry, my experience with NODs is military, where you can't chose at leisure to just not go out if the night is too dark, and where IR illuminator discipline is treated like light discipline, which means not walking around with it on for more than a few seconds.

Generation 2+ NODs were not so fun when trying to navigate difficult terrain while staying quiet and IR disciplined. I guess they're fine when you don't have to worry about that stuff.
>>
>>28041783

Eh, pics speak for themselves. I've used both plenty and gen 2+ isn't useless.

Just my opinion.

Yeah, when you start rocking dual tube it helps keep them up, and when you've got them down it keeps them from flopping around all retarded, like how dudes put rubber bands around their 14s and J arm to keep it from bouncing.

I use my built in bungees on the Sentry helmet, just hook the two claws into the Wilcox mount and it stabilises the NVG a little better, also snaps it back quickly when flicking the unit up.
>>
>>28037523
you can look through a red dot with a pvs 14 mounted to your helmet if you have it on the same side as the gun

If you're going to buy nvg's op, be warned, they fuck with depth perception and spacial awareness
>>
>>28045667
That is something you can overcome with use. Not even training - the more you use them, the more comfortable you can be with them.

You'll never get true depth perception out of a singular monocular, but once you know how you use them properly you won't be falling down stairs.

NV is a rabbit hole.

The monocle is only the first part of the system

Then you need a helmet and mount

Then you need an IR laser

Then an IR illuminator

Then a good way to control all those accessories with tape switches.

Then you'll go back to your helmet and make it wear better with strap and pad upgrades, possibly even ARC rails.

THEN you'll quickly want a silencer and SBR, pulling you down into another rabbit hole of NFA.
>>
>>28048437
I use my NVG for dirt biking at night or sneaking around and shooting out tires with my .22 on hood rich cars ridin on 22's. southside richmond lol
>>
>>28048437
What about NV scopes? They don't seem to get much mention, and i feel like i would prefer something like that over a helmet and rig and all that. I'm not THAT highspeedlowdrag hardcore oper8r.

Are they not worth the money, or is there some other intrinsic problem with a rifle mounted scope vs helmet setup?

>>
>>28049250
>Save money to buy things you want

>>
>>28049217
Mostly because the appeal of night vision is so you can walk around at night and shoot at stuff.

If your night vision is only on a rifle, and not on a helmet you can't walk around in the dark like a ninja desu.

Plus, if you really want a night vision scope, you just attach the monocle temporarily to a rifle.

Thermals are better as scopes anyway, too.
>>
>>28049723
What I was meaning is if you want gen 3s, save rubles rather than settling. That's what I did, got a fuckin' screaming deal on a blem tubed pvs-14. Couldn't touch a bare tube for what i got the assembly for second hand.
