Happy Thanksgiving! Talk about 54R and the guns that use them here! Post your rifles and discuss tips and tricks. Beginners welcome as always.

>Cheapest Mosins

Classic Firearms has 91/30 rifles for $190 base. J&G has M44s for $180 base. Go on Facebook groups for the best deals, I found a 91/30 with accessories for $150.

>Cheapest 54R

Cabela's is selling new production 54R for a decent price. Bud's Gun Shop is selling surplus ammo for $0.25 a round base. I'd recommend buying new production ammo once the Bud's stuff runs out.

>How do I clean out corrosive salts from surplus ammo?

1:10 Ballistol to water solution. Flush it down the bore with a turkey baster. Wipe receiver with solution. Wipe off the bolt externals with the solution. Clean everything as normal when you get home and be sure to clean off the firing pin as well, removal from the bolt not necessary. A can of Ballistol will last forever for this purpose, and the extra time taken amounts to a minute or two at the range at the end of shooting.

Im takeing my nuggets out later this evening.Gonna see how this 1943 izzy i picked up for 120$ stacks up against my ex dragoon.
>>

Was supposed to pick up a hex 91/30 but the guy on armslist was 40 minutes late, I'm sad now.

Check local stores for slightly cheaper if you want to buy one. Never know what you can find.

Even then the prices are very near that of a basic modern era rifle that's probably a better shooter. Then again that was never the point was it, comrade.
>>
>>28001442
Only place near me with them has the rifle with all accessories for $225. Issue is that they're still in cosmoline so I'll end up spending $30 on mineral spirits, $15 on PVC pipe and 5 hours of my time.
>>
>>28002440
My 1943 izzy was covered in comoline when i got it.I just took two hours with a hairdryer and a roll of paper towels did a decent job of getting it out of the stock.Same thing for the metal parts just heated it up and wiped it off. Still requires a full disassembly of course.
>>
>>28001106

nice m39, I have one on the way via based UPS.

what is the best 54R surplus, not necessarily cheapest but best shooting?
>>
>>28002896
In my experience with my own M39, the best groupings I have achieved using surplus have been with Russian heavy ball (copper jacketed lead core 183gr).
Unfortunately, that shit is almost $1/rnd where I live.
Fortunately, Monarch 185gr 7.62x54R is almost an exact copy and costs $8/20rnds at the local Academy. Plus, it's noncorrosive.
>>
>>28002896
Thanks mate. I use 147gr 1940s Soviet light ball. It shoots high and has a lot of split cases but I got it cheap. Will probably switch to new production heavy ball sooner or later.
>>
Best way to push front sight post over?

Took mine out for the first time and it shoots a little over a foot to the right of aim point at 100 yards.

verified by multiple shooters and multiple ammo types.
>>
>>28003205
http://www.amazon.com/Mosin-Nagant-Range-Buddy-Adjustment/dp/B00HTB32LM
Pretty useful little tool.
>>
Is it just me or is 7.62x54r harder on optics than other full rifle rounds? I had a Sightron scope on my vepr that was fine for a while but it seems the crosshairs got canted from regular use.
>>
>>28001106
What does the 1:10 ratio mean? Also, how much is a part?
>>
>>28004395
1:10 means 1 part Ballistol to 10 parts water. Fill up about 1/11th of a water bottle with Ballistol and the rest with water. The water flushes out corrosive salts, the Ballistol lubes and prevents rust.
>>
>>28002440
Get a wastebasket, garbage bag, paper towels and a can of WD40.
Set the rifle in the bag, in the wastebasket and start from muzzle. Spray liberally, and wipe downward. Once you have outside cosmo free, begin disassembly and continue on pieces as removed until clean.
Use an old terry towel to wipe exess WD40 of as you reassemble.
>>
I disassemble and wash it in the dishwasher
>>
>>28003077
>>28003170

Nice. I picked up 182 gr yugo from sgammo. With shipping and all it ends up about .40/round. Sounds like the m39's like heavy ball.
>>
>>28004790
I got the light ball for 29 cents a round after shipping. I wish I'd gone for that instead but the M39 is made to shoot this stuff okay as well. I can always sell it off.
>>
>>28004848

Oh yeah the light ball is cheaper and I almost got it myself. I kinda lucked out with that buy. You can definitely sell off the ammo if you choose to.
>>
>>28004848
The big thing to keep in mind is that Finnish D166 ball (their standard 7.62x53R bullet when the M39 went into service) is in the neighborhood of 200gr, if I'm remembering right. It therefore stands to reason that heavier weight bullets yield better performance.
>>
>>28004917

Yeah I've read that. I wanted 200gr ball but I couldnt find any so I settled on 182. Any tips on M39 ownership? I've shot SMLE's and a mauser for a few years now but this is my first nugget
>>
>>28004917
Not as much better as much as I need to aim with a low six o'clock hold when firing higher velocity ammo. I'll probably sell it off eventually.
>>
Pulling back the cocking knob and turning it to the left to act as a safety by resting on the receiver, yay or nay?
>>
>>28005014
Isnt that the safety on a nugget?
>>
>>28001106
SOG has mosins for $180
there's still a guy in california selling mosins for $150
>>
>>28004935
Whelp, I'm a bit of a gun babby. The M39 was my first rifle (parents are massive libs, got it on my own after I turned 18), but I can tell you a fair bit about.
Number one rule, don't ever re-finnish (get it?) the stock. If you have a Postwar stock (identifiable by square splicing on the stock), then leave it as is. Attempting to mimic the original Finn finish will only depreciate the gun. If you are worried about the stock drying out, a light coat of oil (hell, you could use 3in1) will do just fine to keep the stock in good shape.
Clean it just as you would a regular Mosin. The M39 barrel is .310 as opposed to the .308 of earlier Finn Mosins, so you can clean it with the exact same tools as you would a M91/30 without fear of damaging the barrel. If you are poorfag, then the same standard mix of hot water and windex does wonders for cleaning corrosive shit.
Fun fact, each tick of the windage on the front sight changes POI by about 1 in at 100yds. The battle sight, as I'm sure you've noticed, only goes down to 150m. If you want to truly see where your rifle shoots (in terms of low/high) then don't be afraid to take it out to 200 yards or even further.
The only way to adjust the front sight post up or down is by either buying a new one ($20 on internet) for the former and filing it down for the latter.
That's all I know.
Again, new to funs in general, but fairly familiar with M39.
Pic related is my Mosin collection.
Left to Right:
1944 izzy in Archangel stock
1926 M91 izzy hex
1942 M39 VKT in Postwar stock (100% bluing, most likely a rearsenaled rifle)
>>
>>28004387
You're right. Most rifles for 54r aren't made to handle scopes period. And there aren't too many modern scopes made for the type of mount 54R rifles use as there isn't a huge market for those. So you either get a Bubba special for cheap or something that's just okay.
>>
>>28005091
awesome thanks for the info. any experience using ballistol for cleaning corrosive salts? I hear windex is bad for the bluing
>>
>>28005238
Well, I can only really tell you about hoppes 9 since it's all I've ever used besides windex and I probably have enough in my garage to take a bath in.
It's a general purpose bore cleaner, so you run a couple patches with Hoppes through and then run dry patches until one comes out sorta clean. Finally, use an oiled patch.
As for ballistol, I have no idea. I know it's probably more economical than Hoppes, but I've never used it. Call me recalcitrant.
>>
>>28005238
OP here. It's worked great for the one time I've tried the solution. Shot 50 rounds of WW2 corrosive ammo through my M39. No rust or corrosion detected after an hour drive home.

My favorite part of firing 7.62x54R at an indoor range is getting looks from everyone on the line after your first few shots.
>>
>>28005689
That's honestly the best part about it. Compared to everyone else at the range with AR15s, the M39 sounds like a merciless bitch-slap from god.
>>
>>28005689
nice. i saw the liberty ones, i didnt know if they just picked an immaculate one for the photo or if theyre all in that good of shape
>>
>>28005805
They're not as good as the picture, need some oiling.
>>
>>28005598
OP here btw. How do you get rid of the cosmoline on the handguard? Will a blowdryer and mineral spirits do it?
>>
>>28005872
I'm told ballistol works. Mineral spirits too. Can't speak to the hairdryer method tho.

>Tfw no nugget shooters here

Fuck you, I'm here. I tried out Silver Bear and some random Wolf last weekend to see if I liked it.

I think my nugget really likes the Silver.
>>
>>28008025
Silver Bear is the zinc-coated stuff, right? How does it stack up to heavy ball ammo?
>>
>>28006298
Update: I took a heat fan, some mineral spirits, and a bunch of rags. Waved the heat fan over greasy areas on the handguard, scrubbed with mineral spirits until there wasn't anymore friction or gripping on the handguard. Wiped off, repeated until most of the grease was off and the finish was showing. Looks pretty nice now and, having fairly long arms, I'll be able to grip the rifle further up with that grease cleared. Thanks friend!

Shooting mosin for the first time tomorrow! What does /k/ recommend as a good hog/deer round?

I have some silver bear 174g for tomorrow.

What's the best place to get a Finnish Mosin?
>>
>>28009559
>How does it stack up to heavy ball ammo?

I dont understand the question.
>>
>>28014069
Armslist or local gun store. Keep an eye on classic firearms and mosin crate maybe one day they'll have them again.
>>
>>28014116
With regards to ballistic performance, particularly consistency of groupings, does the Silver Bear fall short of, roughly equal, or exceed the performace of Russian heavy ball surplus ammunition?
>>
>>28014420

No idea. That's the aspect of shooting where I think I fail the most. I don't really keep track of what ammo does what; especially with the Mosin.

I will say that it seemed to perform better than surp, RAS & Wolf, as I was able to peg a small soda bottle with it multiple times at 75yds

I have been a fan of the Brown Bear ammo, so I figured I should try the next flavor, you know?
>>
Are type 53 mosins any good?

They're usually in poor condition. In good condition they're known for having great triggers and pretty decent accuracy with milsurp ammo. Would recommend getting one.

>>
>>28020583
Oh and of course local gun pages usually have Mosins up.
>>
>>28021741
Yeah, it'll ache for a while. I usually prefer a recoil pad on the stock that you can slip on.

I'd recommend a PPU soft point round for shooting at hogs. Russian guides use Mosins out of necessity for bear defense and they work just fine.
>>
>>28021741
A mosin will punch through a half inch of plate steel, it can handle bones.
