This is true. Because gasses aren't being redirected to move the action, there is slightly more velocity. Also, because there aren't any moving parts after the trigger is pulled, there is also a slight improvement in accuracy.

45-70 stops a wolf or coyote much faster than a 308 or other popular hunting round. They don't just stand still like deer.

T B H if ever found myself in a combat situation on my home soil, I would be taking long range shots, then getting the fuck out of there before the bad guys can respond. So a battle rifle would suit that better than an AR.
