How bad are these to shoot on as a first gun? I really wanted some older revolver to plink with, but at the moment the only revolver my shop has is a SAA clone. I did spot an older detective special though and its been on my mind since then
>>
>>27961549
Not ideal but no gun is impossible to learn on. Just don't get discouraged if you aren't driving tacks. Snubs aren't the easiest gun for accuracy. Keep practicing.
>>
>>27961549
Really bad, if you learn on a 2" minimal grip revolver you will develop bad habits and need a lot of work to un fuck yourself.

It's like trying to learn archery on a 60lb longbow.
>>
>>27961582
Those guns have fuck all for sights and grip, it's not a good idea for a new shooter to learn on one.

Can it be done? Yes, with the right kind of instruction, but you're more likely to develop bad grip and shooting habits.

Should it be done? Absolutely not, when there are better, cheaper options available that will teach you properly.

Standard .357 won't do much more than .38+p out of that 2" barrel, but there are special short barrel magnum loads available. Not sure it's worth the extra cost and associated recoil/muzzle blast

does anyone else not mind carrying a revolver with a hammer? I don't often cc a revolver, but when I do its my j frame and I never found it to get in the way that much, plus I hate DAO triggers and think hammerless revolvers are ugly.

J frame Magnums are heavier, but if you want thick, you want a Ruger SP101. same overall size as a S&W j but thicker in every dimension while still being able to use most J Frame carry gear. Surprisingly pleasant to shot with full house .357 Magnum and you can plink all day long with .38 Special.

The Rugers are really simple to take down. all the lockwork is in the trigger module and the gun tears down to this point in about three minutes with a flat head screw driver.
>>
>>27966583
>>27966552
I want a 'first and last' snubby to round out my handgun collection. I'm content with just .38 +P. Which will last longer: the ruger or the S&W (airweight or not).

I'm not too familiar with j-frame models, especially from ruger, so I'd appreciate any info/recommendations
>>
>>27961226
I prefer "plugging Hillary's hole". Anyway, yes I did and it was easy. Unfortunately, I think the dude that made the plug stopped because he got swamped.
>>
>>27966622
>J-frame
>Ruger
That's not how it works.
>>
>>27966622
The J Frame S&W are fine for .38+P. There are Chief's Specials that are 100 years old and still going strong. I'd probably opt for a steel gun over an air weight, but that's just me. You won't notice the extra weight after a little while and it makes shooting for practice more pleasant, meaning you'll shoot more and become more familiar and proficient with your gun.

Ruger does make a .38 Special only SP101, They're tanks and are noticeably heavier than even a steel S&W J frame. I know I never leave the house without mine, even if I'm carrying another gun.
>>27966745
Anon has a point. Only S&W small frame revolvers are J Frames. Though he's being a bit pandentic. Even though small frame Smith & Wesson revolvers are technically J Frames, similar size revolvers from other companies are sometimes refered to as "J Frame sized". Ruger does not have a frame designation for their double action revolvers, thought they make similar frame sizes to S&W.

The SP101 and LCR are small J Frame sized revolvers. The GP100 is about the size of the medium L Frame S&W while the Redhawk and Super Redhawk are both N Frame sized revolvers, though they are both slightly larger.

>>
>>27967293
thank you

so a more apt comparison is S&W airweights (and the steel counterparts, what are they called?) vs Ruger LCR? Is the SP101 noticeably bulkier than these?

Thanks for the replies so far anon

For reference, I've been carrying a PF9, so very small and light with 7+1. Don't even bother with an extra mag, which is why I'm really considering a snub nose, but I want it as small as possible without sacrificing ruggedness
>>
>>27967407
The S&W Airweight is basically a standard J Frame S&W with an Aluminum body. The standard steel guns will be the same size, just made of ferrous or stainless steel. The Company name for the standard steel J Frame is Chief's Special. Shrouded or hammerless versions are the Bodyguard, I think. The model 36 is the standard blued .38 Special. There are several variations and model numbers. Go to the S&W website and look at the J Frame page here;

It will give you a good idea of what's available.

The Ruger LCR in .38 Special is very light. I t uses an aluminum and polymer frame with a steel cylinder that has been cut down considerably.

The SP101 is a bit bulkier, but not terribly so. It will work in most J Frame carry gear. It is noticeably heavier, though. I personally like that weight, but then I carry full power .357 Magnum defense loads specifically made for a snub nosed revolver. The Ruger LCR or S&W Airweight would be fine for .38 Special.

quick, semi-unrelated question. Does pulling the hammer back reduce trigger weight? Someone told me pulling back the hammer first indirectly leads to better accuracy for that reason.

>>
>>27968096
Yes, greatly.
>>
>>27968096
Yes. The heavier trigger pull in double action is because pulling the trigger cocks the hammer and rotates and locks the cylinder into position. manually cocking the hammer does all that ahead of time, leaving you with a much lighter single action trigger pull.
>>
>>27968152
>>27968161
Interesting, thanks guy
>>
Hey what do you guys carry in your snubs?
>38spl
I carry 158+p LHPs they shoot point to aim.

Got a few boxes of 135gr +ps golddots from speer but havent shot them yet.

>357
Didn't know what to get so I got some boxes 158+p GDHP that go through gel test blocks like crazy on all the youtubes vides.

Some 125 +p golden sabers that shoot pretty low for me.

Just curious is all.
>>
>>27968096
Well there is nothing indirect about it. Thats one of the perks of double action revolvers is that you have the ability to either just pull the trigger without cocking the hammer, which in doing so is actually cocking the hammer hence the heavier trigger pull

Been thinking about getting a ruger gp100 for a awhile now. Holy hell is it pretty, but being a rather slim guy, I've got a few concerns about it printing, even through a jacket... Still, it's just such a pretty gun. Anyone else have any experience/advice in carrying .357 or larger?
>>
Anyone have any experience with ria revolvers? From what i understand they are basically direct copies of s&w right
>>
>>27968285
get a good holster and belt, good ccw clothes.

125g seems to be king. Speed strips are easier to carry over speed loaders supposedly.
>>
>>27968223
Winchester white box .357 110gr JHP for CC. Kicks like a mule but flat shooting. .38 Special FMJ for plinking
>>
>>27968357
Mind if I ask why? From what I read it was the best "manstopper" by the boarder patrol guys. Only 110grs I've seen is remington and critical defense.
>>
>>27968223
Out of a snubbie, you want heavier bullet loads for .357 Magnum. The reason being that the longer bullet seats deeper in the case, so it takes less powder to achieve Magnum pressures.

Hot rod 125 grain loads are great for 4 inch barreled guns and longer, but out of a sub 3 inch gun, there will be a lot of wasted powder in the form of muzzle flash and recoil. with the smaller powder charge of the longer bullet loads, much less powder will burn after leaving the barrel resulting in less flash and recoil.

From a shot barrel snub gun, the 158 or 180 grain .357 Magnum will be going just as fast as the lighter 125 grain bullet with a whole lot less drama.

The exception to this is the CorBon/Barnes 125 grain solid copper hollow point load. Copper is far less dense than lead and results in a light bullet load that opens up beautifully and penetrates well from a short barreled gun. It;s what I carry.
>>
>>27968418
Yea for 357 I was hovering around 125 and 158 grain. Haven't seen any 180grs accept for hunting rounds. I'm assuming 180 grain is for hunting larger game and only availbe from buffalo bore and other hunting type ammos?

It shoots well out of my TRR8 at long range and I feel that with the higher velocity due to the lighter projectile it would be effective out of my j frame for defense. But that's just me.
>>
>>27968274
Literally worse than taurus. The huehue's may make a rough finished gun, but at least it doesn't slowly fall apart under standard pressure .38
>>
>>27968483

>>
>>27968450
there are a few others. Speer makes a 180 grain load. PMC has a 150 grain Starfire defense load that is pretty mild out of my SP.
