I tried reading those "Patriot" books and they were total trash. Very clearly written by one of those guys who is a "military enthusiast" but never joined because "flat feet/bad back/bizarre weird genetic condition" and has spent years obsessing over the military. To the point where he thinks he knows what he's talking about.
Sort of the the "Home" book by A. American (really). I read those at JRTC because literally no other reading material. Just wank trash with an obvious self-insert main badass character.

JWR was in the army as an intel officer for nine years. The books aren't meant to be read as straight fiction, the content is "You're on a watch-list tier" of what you can glean from the novels.

Pretty fair point, any of his chapters dealing with religion or courtship are God awful and best just skipped. It's like a sappy airport romance novel written by and for Sunday school teachers.

Great book and very /K/ related because it is about the a guy who was in the first class of SEALS.
Freehold by Mike Z. Williamson which has some great black ops in it because MZW spent a ton of time in uniform and is totes /K/ incarnate minus the weight.
I would also recommend Larry Correia's Monster Hunter books which are gun porn...

It's okay. Tries too hard to straddle some sense of realism when Glass is almost dying every time the author is talking about him.

Movie will probably be better but the book is a very easy read if you're into westerns without cowboys.
