Its not good, it's not fancy, but it shoots when you pull the trigger, and it will kill an attacker. Buy something like that (a .308 is nice and low recoil for a beginner) and spend whatever is left on some ammo, and a gun safely course. And for God's sake, pay attention.

Best advice I can give you is read the safety parts of the sticky, watch the video mentioned in >>27952886 and explain to the gun store clerk that you're brand new to guns. Used Ruger P-Series. You'll have to look a bit, start at local pawn shops and a big box store that does used like Cabellas or something. I usually see them in the 200-225 range with 2 mags, a decent magazine loader, box, and papers.

If you want to order online you find an FFL dealer with http://www.gunbroker.com/FFL/DealerNetwork.aspx. An FFL dealer is usually going to be a local gunshop that will receive the gun and transfer it to you, 'cuz it's illegal to order guns to your house without an FFL(federal firearms license)
Call 'em up during business hours and ask how to order a gun to their store. They might have you give their number or address to the seller. If you need help from the seller then call them too. Gun people are really friendly outside of bartering over guns, they'll help with questions.

That's a pretty abysmal budget. Consider an H&R Pardner pump or a Maverick 88, it's hard to beat a pump-action for simplicity and effectiveness.
Alternatively, save up another $100 and get a Canik CZ copy, or a Walther PPX.

OP I'm a little late to the party, but I think a shotgun would be a good choice. Is pretty simple to learn how to shoot a shotgun decently with little practice. Comparatively, handguns have a learning curve for many. If you are worried about penetration, I would use a heavy load, steel shot, in something like a #2 or 3 shot.

I've always said people should start with .22 LRs to get used to guns, then work up to bigger stuff. My sister insisted on not doing this, and skipping right to a wyoming arms 10mm pistol, and dropped it. When it hit the ground, the gun discharged another shot.
Nobody was hurt, but needless to say, we haven't let her fire a gun since.
