That's a gross simplification of what happened. Hitler was against it for logistical reasons and if you knew about the state of Germany militarily in 43-44, things were deteriorating quickly and defending against bomber raids in the west and the slav infantry and tank hordes. He knew it wasn't a "machine pistol" (don't make me go there). It was actually kinda like supplementing the SAW with the M27 at first until users at the front quickly realized the roles it was suitable for.
