So I'm just now at the point where I can start prepping. I'm planning on investing in gold and silver. Not to mention other items like coffee, cigarettes, and booze for bartering. How do you plan on getting by when the habbening habbens and money is of no use?

That's a shitty plan. Those are neither intrinsically useful in SHTF nor do they hold value well in normal situations. Gold gains value at the same rate that money devalues.
