Yeah I quite like that design too, looks like a neat little utility design and m390 is awesome, wouldn't choose lime green though.

I'm really liking the design of this little knife too, still tossing up whether to get one or not though.

I was considering one of those as well, but I figure if I go with an ESEE it'll probably be a 4. Would get a 6 but TX has a length restriction.

Also considering an Ontario TFI.

lookin good.
2 knives im interested in.

-the top bowie blade, is that a spanish made knife? (looks like the gi blade for the spaniards by aitor) and is it a mirror finish? do it get marred up whenever you use it?

-and the boker blade on the lower right. thats the persian i believe... is it as handy/comfy as it looks? that or the spyderco perin, or the sog ranger for edc if you had to take one?
>>
>>27849132

-The top one is a legit, original Villegas, given as issue to COE and MOE (Special Operations Corps / Command) upon graduation. It was made by Halcón Exposito originally. Now picrelated is its most famous iteration, the Oso Negro (Black Bear). Also widely used

-That is the persian, that's right. Perhaps hands down the shittest knife in the picture. I bought it just out of curiosity and it turns out it's shit. It is actually the opposite of comfy, because the handle is too short (the knife is smaller than it looks) and the protrusion in the bottom of the handle presses upwards against you pinky, something that rivals torture (try pressing your pinky upwards for a while and you'll understand). I dont understand why this shit knife is so cheap considering it comes with a molded kydex sheath and g10 scales.

-Spyderco Perrin is 9/10. So good I'm considering ditching it in favor of a handmade by Fred Perrin himself. Best utility knife I have, I use it for everything knife related (medium and light). Light as a fucking feather (3.5oz).Sheath sucks, I'll get a kydex one done. Hands down one of my favourite knives.

-Sog NW Ranger is 8/10 at least, but bear in mind, I have the OLD model, that is now discontinued. Light and quick. Perfect military EDC knife. Sharp as a mofo (one of the sharpest there). Not too sold on the handle shape. The blade shape is surprisingly similar to the Spyderco.

-EDC Spyderco Perrin hands down all day.

it's a design problem, the thumb stud is press-fitted into the blade, so if the tolerances are even just a tiny bit off it can lead to breakage

I want to put a bayo on my 16" AR but my gas system is to short. Plan is to machine a spacer to lengthen the handle by an inch and a half or so.
>>
>>27849711

I used the Spyderco Street Beat for a while and didn't like it nearly as much. For light use the blade is way too thick both at the spine and behind the edge (~0.040" thick at he shoulder to the edge?! Really?!), and I could not get used to the extremely back heavy balance.
>>
>>27849711

hey muchacho, thats a wealth of info and I really appreciate it!
The spanish ops bowie is some show pony with its finish and lines. I can see why Spec Ops received it.
That is the same story ive had with a boker. They make them look good, but in hand you just feel let down with its toy like quality.

Theres something about short clipped flat ground blades that I like so thats why I asked about the perrin n ranger. Seeing how into knives you are and it gets such a recommendation its got to be a winner. Sure to be a soon buy for me. (& yeah, sogs have some sharp teeth on them, mine bite me and it went so deep so quick it was only clear plasma on the blade)

I just placed an order yesterday for some blades... got a nessmuk, a dadao, and a smatchet on their way! You got your eye on some new stuff too beside the perrin original?

Boker is good in their upper tier, like the applegate daggers etc (although the one I have is beaten to shit unfortunately), but Magnum is shit tier.

Again, I can't really put my finger into what it is (except for the uncomfortable design and weight of the persian, in my case) but even though they come with g10 and kydex I think they're still not worth the price.

I strongly recomend lurking a bit and getting a discontinued Street Bowie. I dont think a coated blade is good for that knife, and I despise the holes Spyderco drills intro their fixed blades for no reason.

The sheath comes with a pseudo tek-lok you can salvage and use for other sheaths.

Steels aren't "good" or "bad" in any sort of absolute sense. Each steel has a certain set of properties that is either more or less suited to a particular application.

440C is typically best suited to coarse finishes because it has a fairly large carbide structure and grain structure. What surprised me about the 440C in my necker is how fine Calton got the grain, and thus how well it performs with a very high grit edge.
>>
>>27850629

For sure want the satin finish if I can find one. The contrast against the handle really makes a big difference in its appeal.

Im in new york, so i'll do some scouring off sites over here. if nothing, maybe I can get lucky with a second hand one off ebay.

Sky high prices, omg.
The smatchet I got was one tenth of the cost... its only a cold steel version lol.
I am aware of euro prices. I got looking for a specific becker that was sold out state side and checked overseas. It was eye opening to say the least. Have to respect those who still collect given that hurdle.

I'm rather torn between the RAT-3 and the Izula. I know I'm ordering one of them this weekend, though.

Yeah, I have too but what I saw involved permanent modification. I have a real old M7 that I'm not going to chop up tho.
I may just get a new M9 to mod given the very slim chance I will never need to bayonet anything.
If I can beef up the design with my machinist powers I will post a how-to.

Custom makers who do their own heat treatments will often have very different opinions on steels than production makers because the difference in scale and target market allows very different HT recipes to be used.

As an example, 1095 is commonly used by production makers for high toughness field knives that need to be easy to sharpen and for that use case is run at HRC ~57 whereas Joe Calton runs his 1095 at HRC ~62 and uses an accelerated quench and a triple normalized temper to extract max hardness below the point where the steel becomes chippy and where grain size is minimized.

The result of Calton's version is basically an American version of a Hitachi White #1 or Blue #1 steel on a Japanese kitchen knife, but with better resistance to chipping.

By extension, 440C in a production environment is totally different than what a small volume maker can do with it.

Okay. Not great. The steel is often too mild to keep a good, working edge. They were designed to be a thrusting weapon that will bend instead of breaking and then be straightened in the field. If you want a good edc fixed blade, get a $15 frost mira.

someone was bitching about choils on spyderco specifically with it not lining up with the thumb ramp. Two of my spycercos have choils and they line up fine with the thumb ramp

im fine with them. some would be neat to try with out but i dont hate them enough to care that much
>>
>>27854124
No, they don't. At least in a knife like the ESEE 3, for example, you can put your index in the coil and put your thumb along the spine directly above or forward of your index finger. This allows you to better control and apply more force onto the cutting edge with your thumb. You CANNOT do this on a spyderco because of the stupid fucking ramps forcing your thumb back; you don't even get the option of choking up with your thumb. You can apply force via the ramp, but the vector is not as direct as if you were able to choke up your thumb more. Sure the ramp helps with stabbing but chance are you do that much less often than needing to choke up. Spyderco's can work for the most part, but they have so many little inherent design flaws it's embarrassing.
>>
>>27854087
What is the purpose of that even supposed to be?
>>
>>27854205
Exaclty, there is no purpose. People say "hurr it allows you to put your finger up closer so you get more control" but if it weren't there and you just used the handle normally you would be closer to the blade in the first place
>>
>>27854087

how big are your thumbs? i can rest my thumb on the top of the blade past the hole ramp. This seems like a subjective objection. Without its easier, but its far from hard and quite doable.

More edge without the choil wouldnt be bad, but i havnt found myself thinking "man it would be the best if this choil wasnt here"

it seems real stupid on outdoor/survival knives though

Even if I agreed on the general principal that index finger choils are generally a waste of space, that particular neck knife is designed for the choil to be used at all times as part of the handle, not just for choking up.

Eliminating it would just mean extending the wood handles all the way to the ricasso, and would eliminate the design intent of splitting the strain of the finger guard between two fingers and allowing the orientation of the blade to be indexed by feel.

The guy literally makes a tester from each sheet of steel he buys and modifies the temper recipe until the edge is balanced between chipping and rolling on a brass rod edge deflection test, and then uses that customized temper for the knives made from that specific sheet of steel.

He also makes knives with performance oriented grinds that are typically ~0.010" thick at the shoulder to the edge.

Spyderco PM2 that I've had about 6 months now. First knife I actually spend time researching and giving a damn about. Pretty happy with it and how it's holding up so far. Though it doesn't seem to hold the edge like I thought it should.

I've been using a gatco 3 stone sharpening system with the clamp on guide. Any recommendations as to what I should be using?

If you wanna attach your m9 to your ar-15, then get an m9.
But if you want a pure fixed blade, get an m11 EOD. It's the same as an m9 but instead of the somewhat fragile bayonet attachment on the hilt, it's flat metal. Much more usable if you want a knife for a knife's sake.
>>
I'm looking to get a beginner folder for someone as a gift. Nothing fancy, just a small reliable knife.

>$25 or less (so that it's not a big deal to replace when it gets lost or if it gets broken)
>small blade, ~2 inches (not very scary or threatening yet still useful)
>lock back or mid lock strongly preferred (liner lock is okay, but it needs to be easy to close while keeping fingers away from the blade's path)
>low maintenance

So far this one is what I'm leaning towards. I've never actually gotten anything from Cold Steel but I've heard good things about their folders.

i have a lansky and id like to get the 36 degree inclusive lowest setting the have for most of my knives but its a chore

The angle isnt reliable due to the relation of clamp to edge and it gets close enough i have to adjust the guide rods off the recommended setting so the stone will clear the clamp and even then it may not clear the knob on the one side.

im going to be moving to bench stones. I think i will get better edges there

For that price range look at Ontario's SP series or their ranger series.

Yeah I guess I should've actually looked... thanks for the spoon feed.

I like the Ranger 9414BM because its a 5" blade and is 1095 carbon steel, but I also like the SP1 because it's a little cheaper, has a 7" blade, and is also 1095 carbon steel.

Is the shorter blade and better grip/finish worth it to get the Ranger over the SP1?

You will also want to focus on the heel of the blade a bit more, from the pic it looks like it hasn't been sharpened at the same angle or to the same degree as the rest.

If it makes you feel better, holding a consistent angle just takes reps. It took me a several thousand passes before I could do a mirror finish freehand. That sounds like a lot, but it really isn't, literally you'd get that many passes in a year or two sharpening weekly.

I brought this up on another thread... for euros n aussies there is a website where you can commission a person from the site who lives in america to buy you something and then ship it off to you as a gift to save you tariffs and what not. Ive never used it as i dont need to, but i would look into it if i was overseas. I know you get raped for no other reason then they have the power to do so and perhaps this can really help you guys out.
>>
>>27865835
Seems like it really worth check it, do you have a link or name for the site? A few weeks/months ago I spoke with some anons on /out/ about doing something similar. Importing directly from US always get euro anons like me raped by taxes. For example Bradford is selling the knife on his site for $159 plus 25 for shipping. If I buy from him I have to pay an additional 23% vat plus 8.5% more because the type of the import. Some products can go up to another 20% tax. It's like this is a communist shithole and they don't want people to have nice things.
>>
>>27866500

this one has a free membership
http://www.foreignshopper.com/services.php

the thing i cam across was a bit more bare bones and more personal. have to look thru my history for it. it was a bit more like craigslist with no formality... just give the person 20bux ontop of the items cost and theyd take care of it. I saw some aussie use it on youtube.

yeah, I think all that added costs of importing goods is just so they deter people from buying outside of the country and keeping the money local to your businesses. its bs but i think smaller markets are sort of forced to play it that way.

gimme a sec and hopefully i'll find it and let you know.
(its like why americans love beckers so much... you get a ton of knife for a good price. so i was like why dont euros like them as much... i saw the overseas prices and what a bummer)
>>
>>27855768
That has to be the most piss fucking poor bevel I have ever seen on a fucking knife. Jesus H christ in a chicken basket did you have your sharpening system set to "JUST FUCK MY SHIT UP"? I am pretty sure a blind guy being dragged behind a car by a rope around his bollocks could put a more even bevel on that knife by dragging it against the road under him. Try going to your local quarry and just start slapping big fucking rocks with the knife blade and it is entirely likely that you will actually improve the horrendous excuse for a cutting edge on that poor abused knife. You should travel to the Spyderco head office, beg for the forgiveness of Sal Gleser, kneel before him and request a sharp tool with which to cut your somach open (as you are too incompetent to produce your own). Should by some miracle Sal find it in his heart to forgive you then please purchase a sharpening system from him, learn to use it, and never post a disgusting bevel like that again.

On small fixed blades, there is a pretty good argument to be made for that type of finger choil to give better grip security without a full hand guard. The idea is to split the pressure between the index and middle fingers, not to waste space to allow "choking up" as on larger blades.

There are many more practical Emerson designs.

Combo edges are fine if you like / need that sort of thing.

The tip on that one looks very fragile.

Ask on Bladeforums, they will sure tell you.

Dont ask for a possible price though.

need a small (flp?) knife for defense, any suggestion? not too expensive if possible
>>
>>27881403
First off, you don't want a knife for defense, even if you think you do. It doesn't matter where you are or what the laws in that place are, a knife is not a good defensive tool.

>>27881329
I'll take it there! Cheers man.

I'd never sell it, to me it's priceless. Just curious as to what it's origin is

Unless you are William E. Fairbairn.

Strictly speaking, a knife is a good defensive tool, if you can quickly murder the attacker with it, before he knows what's going on.

It's not a good "back off!" weapon to threaten people with - unless you can intimidate the other person into submission, a knife won't magically turn your classification from "victim" to "danger, keep away".

Rip being the key phrase since it probably came dull as shit and you sure as hell aren't sharpening that recurve.
