Took the 1871/88 Beaumont/Vitali to the range for the first time a couple weeks ago. I'm fairly certain it's the first time it's been shot in at least 100 years. If you don't have the most interesting or unique gun at the range, then what's the point, right?

Speaking of Milsurp Rifles.

How could History Channel get their rifles so wrong in The World Wars mini series?

Most of the rifles shown are SMLE mk3s or Nuggets. Only one m1917 is shown and not a single mauser.

Which is bothering considering the show focuses on America and Germany.

They even used a wrong tank. Though I will forgive them that. Since I imagine working ww1 tanks are hard to come by.

Gave my K98 a mineral spirits bath last night, never did a proper cleaning on it and I've had it almost a year now. Last I had it at the range I couldn't hit shit with it, noticed when I took it apart that the action screws weren't as tight as they could be, wondering if it was jumping around affecting accuracy. I'm gonna give her another chance before I declare it junk, the barrel is worn but not enough to cause problems I think.

My brother also was planning to go but got sick, so he asked if I wanted to test out his Winchester M1 Garand for him. Never shot an M1, was really fun.

Is it one of the .410 conversions? The British converted a number of them to single shot .410s to give to prison guards and the like, with the idea that if the prisoners broke out they would only have single shot shotguns while the British responding to take it back would have 10 shot rifles.

In states where there was a longer smoothbore season, some hunters bought old milsurp with rough bores and got a gunsmith to "finish the job", removing all the rifling.

It sounds strange nowadays, but at the time in those regions it wasn't uncommon.

The best way to get anmo for a Martini Henry is to reform 24ga shotgun brass. The Lee die set is pretty reasonably priced, and brass is pretty cheap. It's the only way to shoot one cheaply, at least until IMA imports the ammo that was found with the Nepal cache.
>>
>>27832514
yeah
you can find it in walmart too.
>>
I finished cleaning my M48 a few weeks ago, and I finally got some ammo today so I figured I'd see if it could chamber ammo fine before going to the range. I took out the firing pin beforehand so the gun can't misfire.

Naturally it doesn't, the rounds keep getting stuck when the bolt is about halfway forward, and I'm getting dings on the cases about half a cm behind the neck of the cartridges.

I'm guessing I have an extractor problem? Or does the fact I don't have the firing pin assembly in the bolt screw with it?

Thanks.

yes. Home Depot, Lowe's, even Walmart near the paint section. On one of my old nuggets I used a piece of #0000 steel wool soaked in denatured alcohol and just rubbed down the whole rifle until the shellac was gone. Wiped with a dry rag and then rubbed in Boiled Linseed Oil.

it came out decent. Certainly better than the peeling shellac that was on it.

>For US wood GI's were instructed to rub on BLO anyway. There is nothing wrong with putting more on
Other than it doesn't need it?
The oil finish on this stock is 100% original. Why would I want to remove it's 100 year old stock patina?

Also, not every finish was oil. Some woods don't take oil finishes that well. And some methods can downright ruin the wood, like the idiots who use oven cleaner to "clean" the stocks.
>>
>>27832920
It's Tulle, but non-matching, unfortunately. The person I bought it from said they got it off a "kind of sketchy taliban-looking guy who claimed he was on our side" in a bazaar in Kandahar. The bottom bayonet came with it, while I had bought the top bayonet about a year ago at a gun show for $50.

The cache was equally bought by IMA and Atlanta Cutlary. They've only imported a portion of the guns and none of the ammo. The guns are stacked like cord wood in their warehouse and it's only about 1/3 of what was found.

>It also looks dry which would be a reason to give it another coat.
Contrary what you may hear on the internet, the stock oil DOES NOT "freshen" the stock, nor does it keep the stock from drying out. The stock oil's purpose is only to keep excess moisture out of the stock. That's all it's there for. If you reoil a stock all you are doing is putting more oil on top of oil as the oil only penetrates the first few millimeters of the wood at best.

The last Mausers that Serbia bought from Germany were the Model 1910 rifles, still in 7x57mm. After WW1 the Serbs got a bunch of Gew.98 Mausers from Germany and Austro-Hungarian M1914 Mausers (requisitioned Mexican, Colombian and Chilean Steyr M1912 rifles). These were re-built in the late '20s-early '30s into M24b rifles chambered in 8x57.

Nah, just the cocking piece is marked. The original (mismatched) bolt was fairly fubar. Taking the firing pin out the stub the cocking piece slides around sheared off, and the end of the firing pin threads turned to dust.

Liberty tree has NOS bolt bodies so i got one and the round cocking piece to go with it.

I didn't actually notice the DP until you mentioned it. I can't imagine it being so bad, but it may explain why the safety doesn't like to stay down anymore.

>>27843301
How much do reloading tools cost? I know you need a press to seat the bullet, anything else?
>>
>>27846616
Not him but a basic Lee press costs about $120 and the dies are about $80-90 (cheapest I could find was here http://www.titanreloading.com/577450-martini-henry-3-die-steel but going to ebay might be cheaper because of shipping) .

It's important to note the cheaper presses aren't going to work unfortunately. You need one that can accept the Large Series dies which are 1 1/4-12 threading while the standard Lee size is 7/8-14 which the budget ones are solely designed for.

Can't seem to find bullets but moulds are about $80-90 (cheapest being on ebay but without handles) and you pretty much need it for bullets or it'll be about a dollar for them alone. Speaking of ebay there are chamber adapters that shoot .45 but it isn't very accurate apparently without doing some weird things with heeled bullets and the such

Cases as were mentioned are available at [email protected] for about $45 for a box of 25.

So total you are looking at $330 startup costs and that is without going into powder and primers, lead you could find if you look around. Pretty expensive but with something like Martini Henry it'll start paying for itself within 70 or so rounds.

There have already been M1 rifle and M1 carbines imported from Korea. They were imported by Blue Sky in the 80s and nearly all were shot to hell. It wasn't uncommon for you to be able to drop a .30 call bullet straight down the barrel. Often, especially for the carbines, the barrels were bulged, sometimes even multiple times from squib loads being shot out. The Koreans also bought out of spec M1 carbine barrels that the US Army had already rejected.

You can still find them and usually for cheap because no one wants a Blue Sky import marked rifle or carbine, even if they have a good barrel.

Also, some of the imports had the import stamped so deep it bent the barrel. lol

Agreed. My first ever gun purchase was an M44, unissued in the original oilpaper wrapper out of a crate that was rotting around itself. $99. After I fell in love with it I spread the word by buying 2 crates for $2600 (20 rifles a crate, $65 a rifle.) I forget who the importer was but the dealer I got them through just wanted $100 to process the transaction and the seller threw in two cases of nugget food on top. $2700, kept five rifles myself, made $700 in the end and had a lot of buddies who were happy with their "Awesome Historical Soviet WWII Era rifles!"

dies for the 43 beaumont are fuck-you money, but I'm just using an old 45acp sizing die and just neck sizing my fired brass after annealing the neck to help it last longer. I actually pulled the seating insert out of my 45 die and chucked it into my drill press as a way to seat the bullets on the cheap. I wouldn't recommend cutting corners like that unless you've done a fair bit of reloading already and know what you're doing. get started with a nice easy caliber like 38 special or something that's cheap and hard to fuck up. Starter kits will generally run a couple hundred, hornady makes good stuff, rcbs can be a little overpriced, lee dies are fantastic if you're on a tight budget.
