If your design is so fucked up that it has shot traps, your vehicle won't survive combat for very long. That's pretty damned important to the crew, I'd say.

If your army is likely to see battle against the Glorious People's Armed Forces of the People's Republic of Dirkadirkastan, who are still using Chinese T1959s and WWII-leftover Russian full-caliber 100mm AP rounds*, shot traps are very VERY important.
*protip: this generic description covers a LOT more countries than are buying T90s, even monkey-model T90s, in the year 2015
