Well, if the jet really was bombed maybe we'll see more Russian ground forces involved. Perhaps they'll turn the tide.
>>
>>27793908
>implying
People seem to forget that putting foreign ground troops into the middle east is just a game of attrition.

They may turn the tide in terms of a front-line senario, but they would have a hell of an insurgency on their hands if they tried.
>>
>>27793939
I think it's safe to assume Syria is no longer viable, but Russian troops could be used to secure a viable Pro-Assad nation carved out of it. It'll take a bit of ethnic cleansing, but it should be doable. The other bits of Syria will have to fend for themselves.

The only question will be how Turkey reacts, especially if a Kurdish nation stands up.
>>
>>27794011
Honestly it's just a syptom of a larger problem that just seems to be resolving itself to the dismay of world powers and the politicians that like to play the bloc.

The Eurofags chopped up Africa and the middle east according to how they saw fit and didn't give a rats ass about the cultural, religious, or political divides within the borders they drew.

It's going on in Iraq, Syria, the Sudans, the CAR, the list goes on.

If an independent Kurdistan rises (as it rightfully should) Turkey would throw a fucking fit for sure.
>>
>>27794063
>didn't give a rats ass about the cultural, religious, or political divides within the borders they drew

If we see instability in those former colonies as a result of those divides, I don't hold out much hope in avoiding it in most modern western nations. But that's stepping outside the main thrust of this thread.

Have the Russians managed to increase their sortie rate, or are they still struggling with some of the local conditions?

5 star here , what happened in Morek last night is becoming a bit more clear. After Jaf took it over late yesterday there was a battle in the city overnight.

Pro SAA sources said it was a counter attack while pro rebel sources say now it was a group of shia militia left behind after the initial retreat. They are implying it was some sort of last stand by trapped regime forces. This is pro rebel sources vs pro SAA sources so take that into account. Whatever the case was rebels still claim control of the city this morning.
>>
>>27798944
As I was posting this pro SAA sources are now claiming fighting is ongoing in the city. City of Morek is still disputed.

tl;dr nobody knows what is going on

>>
>>27799247
Holy shit you cared enough about this to bring it over to the next thread. Well here we go:

You acknowledge the eastern bloc took much longer than you said to rebuild. This invalidates the same stupid statement you have been spouting about Europe being rebuilt in a matter of years. The West absolutely had a meteoric return to its former self but it still wasn't rebuilt in 5 years. The Economies were healthy within that time window but infrastructure had yet to bounce back from the sheer amount of damage caused.

As for notable stakeholders. Russia and Iran are both sending military aid to Syria already and it is having a less than remarkable effect. So you think that two countries who are already aiding Syria, but not enough to even win the war, will be able to rebuild the country as fast as Europe was rebuilt? Neat theory. As for the UN, they are already dealing with the humanitarian crisis resulting from this war. Their funding is going to supporting the refugee camps not the Assad government. They are also underfunded and wont be receiving and notable amounts money to rebuild the regime if it wins the war.

As for my autism? Nah I'm just trying to inform you that your comparison is retarded and so are you.
>>
>>27799663
>Eastern Europe struggled, so Europe didn't rebuild quickly!
Western Europe rebuilt in a matter of years.

Does this appease your autism?

>but it still wasn't rebuilt in 5 years
Sure it was.
It was pretty much up and running at pre-war levels, with tremendous future prospects.

>rebuild the country as fast as Europe was rebuilt?
When did I say Syria was going to rebuild as quickly as Europe?

Europe was destroyed on a massive scale in WWI and WWII, and each time bounced back in a matter of years.
So just because a country is shot up, doesn't mean it can't rebuild.
>>
Other then the CIA makeing promises it can't keep to Kurds and using them as a counterweight, like they always have, is there any damn reason in the world for the US to give a shit about anything that happens in Syria? It's a terrible country.

Let's just make a new Kurdish homeland in North Dakota. It's a richer and less godforsaken place then they are now and it's the only solution to the problem that would make Turkey happy.

>if Europe can rebuild from WWI and WWII, then Syria should be able to rebuild after this.
I just gave you a dozen reasons why Syria would not be able to rebuild even marginally like Europe did post WW2.

But you CHOSE to ignore every single argument I made and keep repeating the same baseless statement thinking it would convince anyone?
You're comparing Europe, that wile the war was going pioneered ballistic missiles, Jet aircrafts, guiding systems, working radar system and so much more.
While the greatest Syrian feat of engineering is stuffing explosives into a barrel.

Syria *before the civil war* was more failed than Europe after ww2. Some physical infrastructure is not all these is to it.

But you'll ignore this, as you ignored every point in my last point.

>A working country.
Syria was not a working country before the rebellion. What makes you think that going through a devastating civil war for at least half a decade would in improve Syria?
Because that's what you're saying.

From 2012 (The Moscow times):
>Syria has been suffering huge electricity blackouts for years because its power generation meets only two-thirds of demand.
http://www.themoscowtimes.com/business/article/medvedev-offers-nuclear-plants-to-syria-at-damascus-talks/405760.html

Syria in 2010 was getting UN food shipments, Yes, like some african country:
>WFP this week started distributing emergency food aid to almost 200,000 people in the northeastern region, the agency said in a statement on 3 March, after plans to reach 300,000 beneficiaries were scaled down owing to a lack of funds.
>UN and government figures say 1.3 million inhabitants have been affected - 800,000 severely.
>Up to 80 percent of the severely affected are living on a diet of bread and sugared tea

http://www.irinnews.org/report/88294/syria-severe-food-shortages-in-parched-eastern-region

And I'm not going to go into water rations, but you can check they were having this as well PRE revolution.
>>
>>27800141
You have full-blown autism. Look at this shit.

Europe was destroyed on a much greater scale than Syria, and was able to bounce back after a few years.

Therefore: just because Syria is shot up doesn't mean it can't rebuild.

>>
>>27800146
Even a destroyed Europe post ww2 had a better functional industry than Syria had BEFORE the rebellion has even started.
Europe had some of the best in the world human resources and scientifically achievement, they had little competitors in many aspects of economy and industry.

All Syria has is oil. They were failed and on the road to become a failed state before the rebellion even started.

100 bn $ may build you roads and buy you factory equipment. But it would not get you skilled workers, doctors, engineers, scientists and economists.
Syrian agriculture struggled back in 2010 because they were not implementing basic water saving technology that's available from the 50's and 60's.

Comparing a war between distinct national actors in Europe to some Muslim shithole cesspool of a religious civil war is outright autism.

Tell me, how well did Yemen rebuild from it's civil war back in the 60's? We had regionally powerful and wealthy actors involved, including with troops on the ground there (KSA and Egypt). That is a fair comparison to what Syria stands to become.

>You're comparing Europe, that while the war was going pioneered ballistic missiles, Jet aircrafts, guiding systems, working radar system and so much more.
While the greatest Syrian feat of engineering is stuffing explosives into a barrel.

It's not comparable on any scale. Calling me names won't change that one bit.

On to non Morek news. IS has taken a former regime held neighborhood in Deir Zour called Rasafa. IS still fighting on the outskirts of Deir Ezzor airbase in that seemly unending battle.

The SAA has sent reinforcements into Deir Ezzor city to try and reverse IS gains as the Russians are bombing the area as well.

Commander of al-Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards Qassem Soleimani delivered on Monday before Iranian soldiers fighting in Syria. Soleimani said that "Aleppo will be released at any cost, however high it may be." Soleimani was quoted as saying: "Iran's top management had ordered the release of Aleppo, even if it takes 100 thousand martyrs." Soleimani also stressed: "The role of Iranian advisers in Syria is not limited to the protection of Shiite shrines. They protect each house, he converted to Islam and humanity. "Philip Smith, one of the most authoritative experts on Shiite militias, talks about the role of Iran and its allies in the battle for Aleppo:" It is not just about the biggest recognized Iranian deployments abroad here also demonstrated the fruits of the efforts to establish a Shiite pro-Iranian Iraqi militias. "The representative of the Iraqi police Harakat Hezbollah en Nadzhuba deployed in Aleppo, Bashar al-Saidi, says:" It does not matter where we are - in Iraq or in Syria - because we are fighting against one enemy. We all - the followers of Khamenei, and we will fight everywhere, protecting Shiite shrines and Shiite population. "Saidi added," Sulejmani told us - the path of liberation of Mosul passes through Aleppo.

All true especially the deep shit part. The SAA and shia militias took heavy casualties in Morek and now Jaf has started taking Atshan and other locations in the northern Hama front. Approaching the doorstep of Hama city.

Let me explain something about offensives since you have no knowledge on anything related to the military. They depend on momentum and Jaf has it.

Either that, or they just attacked in the south to keep big FSA contingents busy while they take turf in Aleppo.
Not sure if this is the plan, but they took quite a bit of clay around Aleppo, and if Aleppo falls, this war will be over.
Other options are that they just want the FSA to stick their heads out and let them bleed out by Russian air strikes, or SAA is simply incompetent.
Until we got definite results it is hard to tell, so pick your poison.

There are hardly any Syrians fighting in Aleppo no the regime side. It's mostly exclusively Iranian troops and Shiite militias and mercenaries from Iraq and Afghanistan as well as Hezballah.
>>
>>27802225
Why would Aleppo falling end the war? To either side for that matter.
There is no one victory that's going to end the war. The war will end only when attrition makes either side run out of troops or with complete conquest.
I can see the Sunni willing to stop fighting if they take everything but the Alawi regions, but they will not stop fighting if Aleppo or anyone other one place falls to Assad/Iranian forces.
I don't see the Sunni stop fighting as long as there are Iranian troops in Syria for that matter, no matter how much land they take.

It would be a big blow for the opposition though, no doubt.

>Nobody's air striking Assad

Yet. The whole point of Western propaganda is to side-step their populace unwillingness to get involved militarily. Now they're bombing Syria with no approval. Now, openly arming and training terrorists against Assad. It won't be long before they can either manufacture a reason to bomb Assad's forces, or just start doing it anyway and use Assad's past crimes as an excuse.

The latest propaganda is that Russia isn't bombing ISIS at all, but the anti-Assad rebels. This comes at the same time the US defense secretary warns Russia of "reprisal attacks" on Russian civilians as a result of their actions in Syria. So that means the US and Britain are actively putting their civilians in danger by bombing ISIS in Syria but Russia shouldn't do it because it's too dangerous?

The US has allegedly been bombing ISIS in Syria for a year, yet ISIS have only become more powerful there.

That's a good question. To where they have made headway right now is Hama of course for non IS rebels. IS all over the place with their fronts between gains and loses. One gain is in the city Mahin which is close to a major regime supply line. As far as everything else in Syria tl;dr stalemate.

Future territory gains and loses from either IS or Jaf/FSA/Nursa is speculation on my part. I would have to think about it before saying such things.

Morek is a strategic point on the Hama front. There was a reason the SAA tried to hold it.

As far as the southern front Al Nursa's counter attack is starting to stall the SAA offensive. The SAA needed to take Al Hadher and they haven't.

Assad takes huge swathes of territory and a whole bunch of towns south of Aleppo, and it means absolutely nothing.

Nah, just stronger in fronts against:
> SAA definitely (especially in Wilayah Homs from capture of Qaryatayn, Mahin and Palmyra)
> FSA (capture of Sawran and the whole slice of NE Rif Aleppo)

They are weaker though in the fronts against:
>YPG (lost large chunk of Wilayah Raqqa including Tal Abyad, Ayn Issa and Wilayah Barakah with capture of Qamishli pocket, Western Rif Hasakah and the current ops in al-Hawl)
> Peshmerga (lost most of rural Sinjar)
>ISF/PMUs (lost Baiji to PMUs in a lightning campaign, slowly being strangled in Anbar especially in Ramadi)

Morek is pretty strategic because it serves as a gateway to the pretty anti-government city of Hama. Hama is like Idlib in that it was traditionally anti-government, once Jaysh al-Fatah reached outskirts of Homs, I have no doubt that it will fall similar to what happened in Idlib, another stridently anti-gov city

Also, the rebel capture of Morek speaks of SAA's performance that a city they spent more than 6 months capturing fell in less than a day. To pour more salt in the SAA wound, Jund al-Aqsa (the sole rebel group who captured the town), wasn't even that large (~1000)

Pro SAA source claiming NDF/SAA has taken full control of Ghamam in Latakia today. Likely a lot of rebels were killed trying to hold it. There you go pro Assadists and Mandic I cover everything , even rebel loses. Are you not entertained!?

On a serious note this village is likely to be heavily contested. It's changed hands twice in the last week.

Rebels have taken Umm Haratayn and Atshan and have entered Ma`an where ther is heavy fighting admidst rumours that the NDF is falling back whilst SAA is doing the opposite and trying to hold their ground.

Seems like the new offensive took them by unaware.

Where the fuck are the Russians in all of this and why aren't they delaying the rebel offensive?
>>
>>27809535
lolwut you want more russians to die?
>>
>>27809547
Well, weren't they supposed to bomb the living fuck out of every rebel offensive and at least stop them from taking more ground?
>>
>>27809550
If ISIS didn't drop that plane then it should've happened but Russia is now afraid of retaliation again. It's over
>>
>>27808925
I agree with you on this issue, mostly. Two towns is not momentum yet, and a small defeat =/= SAA falling apart.
But Morek alone is a larger town than any town that the SAA managed to take in their entire offensive.

>They ran at the sight of approaching enemies, leaving everything behind.

Only partially, you don't run away leaving tanks and vehicles behind.

Sorry to barge in like that, but i have a little request. I guess it's better to start here then google.
You guys seem to have both respectable background knowledge and a general view to contextualize current events, and various sources to get recieve information.
Could you explain the current situation to me, or even better, provide recources to both get an overwiev and a short history of the conflict ? What sides are involved, what are their interests and allegiances, how did the distribution of territories held by various groups develop ? Also asking for useful news sources to use - both twitterfeeds and institutionalized news providers seem to be used here. Official sources are welcomed too. If possible, explain what kind of source you posted so I can anticipate their biases, close to :

As my research-time is limited, I'll just provide a rough limit :
I'm ready to read up to some 300 pages and spend 5-10 hours on research instead of chanbrowsing .

Anyone able to summarize the situation in Iraq?

Slow advance and tit for tat between isis and government/kurdish forces.

Ramadi itself is now being cleared out and the government/PMUs are pushing north from Baiji to surround the Hawija pocket.
>>
>>27809707
YPG and Peshmerga are comming down on ISIS in Sinjar from the north, west and east.
>>
Damn SAA really dropping the ball in north Hama. Like I mean why should it surprise me they do this consistently but it still managed to surprise how quickly they retreated with little fight.

FSA commences field repairs on a T-XX tank (I'm not a tread head) by replacing its barrel and refitting the turrent.

I found this to be pretty impressive. I guess the FSA has enough defected mechanics they have this capability. Another thing to think about is how easy it is to fix this T-(55?) compared to something like the Abrams or other modern tanks. Surely if an Abrams is as broken as this tank they are probably just fucked until its back at a real maintenance station.

The reason I make sure to and if the source is pro or anti on the twitter side is there are well established shrills for all sides. All of them have outright lied before but it's all we have for up to the minute stuff. I try to follow up on anything I post. The rest are the news agencies, blogs , sub reddit and my own opinion. People here have been following this war since the beginning so the context is years in the making. You got investigate it it for yourself. It's kind of obsessive for me since I like weapons and battle tactics.

I'm out until the new day in Syria 10 hours from now. I only lurk when the action starts.

This pic from PetoLucem right after the fall of Morek gives you some idea of the collabsing North Hama frontline.

On the right side, Tell Sukayk, Umm Haratayn and Atshan have all fallen in the last 24 hours.
The fight is now for Ma'an. Some hill outside is captured (dont know if its the Tall Sawan on that map), some sources speak about battles in the streets, but nothing confirmed.

If the whole right flank of the frontline collapses, then it could get really dangerous for Souran, especially since rebels are said to approching it directly from the north as well. Souran should not, under any circumstances fall.

Okay, now we are going into dangerous twitter pro-rebel territory, which I usually avoid like hell, so take it with a HUGE grain of salt.

Qubaybat abu-al Huda is also on the PetoLucem map, directly beneath Umm Haratayn, meaning that still there is no new defensive line for the government troops and Ma'an could be attacked from behind.

allegedly rebels looking down from Tall Sawan to Ma'an, which would mean that the hill has indeed fallen.
(i dont think that loud green makes any good camo, but who knows)

>>27811824
Too little manpower, too much material lost in the last days, low morale, fear of TOWs, overstreched front/supply lines, focus on other fronts and so on.

Ma'an is an alawite town, so that explains why at least there seem to be some resistance.
>>
>>27811947
I wish the russians would actually behave how amerishills claim that they are, like sending in ground troops. I never even knew what Alawites were before this shit happened, but god do i hate ISIS. Ruined my favourite god.
