So /k/, a local gun shop has a slightly used sks in stock. It seems to be in pretty good shape minus a few dings and nicks in the stock.

If I was to buy it, what are some maintenance tips for it? Anything I should be aware of aside from the free floating pin?

General sks thread.

I'm saying I already have a WASR, in fact I have two, the first one I bought 10 or 11 years ago, it was a little beat off but shoots decent $225. The one I paid $365 for was in near new condition, got it about 5 years ago.

You don't really have to do anything except make sure that pin still moves freely. Anything else is just luxury. Put oil / grease in the rails of the bolt carrier, the cam surface of the bolt, and wherever you see the bluing rubbed off from use. These guns don't need to be maintained that much. I've shot mine for hundreds of rounds before cleaning it. Aside from the occasional stovepipe, it's suffered no major issues.

If for whatever reason you somehow managed to shoot some corrosive ammunition, be sure to clean it as soon as you can. The corrosive chemicals will start rusting the components. I'm assuming you live in the United States? So this shouldn't be an issue.
>>
>>27791351
I like my sks more than any 762 ak I've held so far(mak90 came close). I think it'd take an arsenal with ak-74 style FSB & brake to sway me from sks to ak. I love using stripper clips, and I like the feel of the sks.
I still don't think the arsenal could sway me from my cz vz though.
>>27791302
There's not much for maintenance tips other than just be careful when you do clean it. The spring loaded rod under the rear sights will go flying towards the muzzle if you move the lever too far past 45 degrees. So try to keep your finger on it keeping pressure when you release or are messing with the lever.

Honestly, you can just run the thing dry and only clean it when you feel like it. They were made with the idea that they were going to be in the shit and poorly maintained at best.

Not really OP. Just take the firing pin out and give it a nice clean. Do this every 300 or so rounds depending on how dirty it is.

Get strippers clips and a sling and you're good to go.
>>
Hell I sold my SKS years ago and don't even want one but for $200 I'd buy it simply for fun and then to flip it for a profit if/when I got bored. $200 is a very, very good price these days

If it starts short stroking or stove piping frequently, your gas valve may be going to shit new ones are like $15ish and install in a minute.

A $200 SKS is a good SKS at this point in time.

>muh $99 SKS
>muh $300 WASR
It's not 2008 anymore you fucking retards, the prices are going up and there's virtually nothing you can do to stop it. If you can find a straight SKS for under $300 you'd be stupid not to buy it.

Do it OP

Hey OP coming from a Yugo sks owner, the only thing i really clean is the gas system, being the piston, gas valve, and the gas tube. If you do not clean these the bolt will start to not cycle. Make sure you fix that sticky bolt if it has one because if the bolt sticks in one place it may slamfire. The bolt on a sks has a free floating firepin so make sure you clean it off. What really helps to get carbon of of your bolt is laquer thinner < this shit works. But if you found a sks for 200$ go right ahead because mine costed me $390 in my area they are going up in price so buy one!

All of them but the yugos have cromed bores. As long as it's not a yugo even that won't hurt it.

Here's a strange one.

My buddy has a Russian model, stamped Tula 1954. Weird thing was, the bolt was painted to match the rest of the receiver, and I don't think it was done aftermarket because matched the rest of the gun. Every other one I've seen was polished, not painted. What's up with this, and he's wondering if he should take some steel wool and polishing compound to it.
>>
>>27793063
DO NOT SCRUB THAT BOLT

Its a factory return bolt if its actually blues and looks black like mine in pic related. If its actually painted and not black then that's some jackass that did that. In the late 50s the soviets returned a lot of rifles. Its common to see Russians with black bolts, black bayonets or laminated stocks... Or in my case all three.

>>
>>27793138
That's pretty common on refurbs. Ask your friend if there's a square with a / or an X in it on the stock. Usually the right side butt. All it means is some part was worked on or replaced.
>>
>>27793162
I'm hanging with him later today, will check then.

>>27792071
VIS radom bro reporting.
That a Type 1 or Type 2?
>>
>>27793200
Well that's perfectly fine. Steel wool and gun oil will get that right out. The most I'm doing with my Russian is refinishing the stock in another couple years. My Norincos and D I mess with a lot.
>>
>>27793214
Apparently it's preferable to a $300 SKS that won't explode in your face

:^)
>>
>>27793232

>>
>>27793223
I think he actually has a metal polishing compound that he used before on some chrome pieces of his car.
>>
>>27793214

WASRs don't explode in your face.

Where are you even getting that from? If WASRs suck so royally why does the US military buy them for contractors in Iraq/Afghanistan? Why do hundreds of thousands of them get sold and enjoyed every year in the US alone?
>>
>>27793241
It'll work but not as good as steel wool and oil. I like that method because I oil the gun at the same time.
>>
>>27793258

You don't prefer to buff off surface rust with dry wool?

If I use oil, I get little bits of wool stuck in all the nooks of my gun.

Hey thanks Red, I had impulse baught it when I was at a store in Redding (Northern California) for 500 about half a year ago. Probably bought it a bit high then, but it seems like I did alright. I'll never sell it probably, but it feels good haha

I'm the same anon that inquired about your .38 and snake hunting. Also drew a circle on your sks picture. I should probably make a trip when I talk to you, so you know it's me again haha. Idk.
Thanks again Red

Oh yeah hey, don't be like me and trip for no reason, although I'm anon more instead of a trip. You paid on the low end if average for northern California. I really think everyone should have the chance to own one. Its not the best rifle but iys perfect for me.
>>

Yeahh I getcha, I'm pretty happy with it. It's just a shame I can't hand load for it. I currently load .38, .40, and I really wanna load .32 S&W long, but I can't find the right top-break revolver that I'm hunting for
>>
>>27794335
Try gunbroker. You looking at S&W, H&R or Iver Johnson? If I still had mine I'd sell it to you. I bought two broken revolvers and fixed one. Nice little Iver Johnson with owl grips.
>>
>>27794647
Yeahh I've been hunting around for any of the three, but I have yet to find a really good one, except one, but they won't ship to California. And I thought I found another but I'd be afraid of ruining it if I cold blue it
>>
>>27794803
Its a hundred and fifty dollar revolver, or it should be. What's the price they want? You wont ruin it. Its not like its a colt walker from 1855
>>
>>27794825
well heres the one i was worried about ruining,
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=519488645
thoughts on it? The reason i'm staying with .32 instead of the .38 S&W is because ive already got a pretty good H&R Model 532 in .32, so i want another in .32, so i would feel obligated to buy the dies for it haha
>>
>>27794846
That's was me, buy it then. It looks good enough, can use a cleaning and rebluing but it will be the reason to reload 32. Can you use the same dies for .32 ACP?

still a good buy? looking at >>27793729

There isn't one. The ak is strong but a well built sks (Russian, polish, east German, Romanian, Hungarian) is stronger. The SKS should have been chambered in 7.62x54r also. Would have been better then the SVT40. Would be called the SVS at that point.
