Great thread.
What does it mean when a pilot calls out his callsign followed by "defending"?
>>24343008
No you dumb fuck, It means a flight of aircraft can carry more munitions on a sortie. It makes sense.

Wake Island? What do they even use that for these days?
I remember playing Wake Island in BF1942 when I was 13.

According to Wikipedia it's just used as a refueling point in the middle of the Pacific, and also for emergency landings.

If anything it makes my taxpaying wallet hurt.
It pains me to see these overhyped, overpriced pieces of flying junk, that can be easily be detected by a 1942 radar.

>engaging
Sorry, intercepting*
>>24346693
So far everything he predicted for the F22 came to pass.
The F35 will fail just the same, only more costly.
Even the russians are backing out of this whole "stealth" since they realized
that you cannot make 100,000 hp push 30 tonnes of aircraft at 1000mph through the sky and be stealthy.
It simply does not work.
Maybe the Iranians got right, after all?

>>24346818
Is that why EVERY major power in the world is designing their aircraft to be VLO?
>>24346848
"Stealth" does not mean "invisible" It just means that an object is harder to detect under certain circumstances.
the B- 2 was developed to be resistant against IR-tracking and centimeter radar.
Electromagnetic radiation cannot resolve objects smaller than half it's wavelength.
This mean if you shine radiowaves in the 10 metre band at a B-2 all these carefully scluptured features mean nothing to the wave.
The inch thick anti radar coating also has no effect on long radiowaves.
The long radiowave just detects a metal object in the air (engines, weapons, airframe) and is reflected off it and gives away the B-2's position.
Chinese and russian low frequency radar can easily track the B-2 and they have become exeedingly effiecient at using it.
>>24346890
VLO? what is that supposed to be?
>>24347068
>doesnt know what vlo means
very low observable
>>24346890
This is just a marketing term that actually does not mean anything.
Same reason why everything /k/ is marketed with "tactical".
>>24347258
So VLO no longer means that an aircraft can only be detected at a fraction of a 4th gen fighter's detection range? Wow, sure does sound gimmicky!!!!
Fucking idiot.
>>24347045
No, they cannot "easily track" them. They can see something is in the area like an early warning radar can. Have fun guiding a missile into them though, buddy. Let alone even getting ranging info...
Again. There is a reason not only USA is making stealth aircraft, but also Russia, China, and all the people buying F-35s. Do you think China and Russia would be developing their domestic VLO aircraft if they thought it was super easy to see and shoot down? Do you really?
>>24347418
Oh, boy. Your really drank the kool aid, didn't you?
There no such things as "4th generation fighters". This is something that was cooked up for the politicians to spout in order to look smart.
An aircraft is a bunch of weapons, a cockpit and an engine strapped to a wing.
Not tracking?
1999 was the last time the US met an opponent that had AA capabilty worth mentioning.
And the serbs downed an F-117 using nothing but binoculars and a primitive SA-3 Goa SAM.
Do you think the russians and chinese have sitten on their hands since then?
As soon as a "stealth" gets hit with broad band radio waves from different directions the airraft becomes very visible.
imagine a mirror - you may not allways see your reflection, but you can allways see the mirror as what it is.
>>24347659
The F-117 being shot down was a lot more complicated than that and I think you know it. Also you didn't answer my question from the last post:
>Do you think China and Russia would be developing their domestic VLO aircraft if they thought it was super easy to see and shoot down? Do you really?
You are basically saying that the Russians are developing their own stealth fighters knowing that stealth is literally useless. Also, I mentioned 4th gen, not 5th gen (the stealth aircraft) so I'm starting to think you are just brand new to the whole aircraft scene and don't know anything about it. So lurk more before trying to say your opinion on air warfare or put on a trip so I can filter you.
I personally think that this is the most beautiful jet

It's called Kiriatsu, it's how the Japs keep their shit japanese. It equals higher prices, but keeps jobs in Japan and gives them peace of mind that some chink didn't install a back door when it was produced then exported.

there's enough F-16s to wage most of the European air wars alone.
I'm considering just becoming a /k/ troll about aircraft. People here get trolled by other people saying WW2 radars can detect stealth but still reply to them anyway. I wonder if I can contact the Chinese government and be paid for shilling.

So uhh is the F-16 like the 1911 of the fighter plane world, why is there so many variations and custom jobs? Next thing you know there will be Iranian F-16s or Phillipine ladyboy F-16s...
>>24354527
Everybody's air force is a special snowflake.
>>24354527
>why is there so many variations and custom jobs?
Each country has their own interests, prices and requirements. The plane itself is clearly highly variable.
It's also worth noting that the version the US buys is not available for export.
>>24354527
the F-16 is the M-16 is the airplane world

>There no such things as "4th generation fighters"
" Fourth-generation designs are heavily influenced by lessons learned from the previous generation of combat aircraft. Long-range air-to-air missiles, originally thought to make dogfighting obsolete, proved less influential than expected precipitating a renewed emphasis on maneuverability. Meanwhile, the growing costs of military aircraft in general and the demonstrated success of aircraft such as the F-4 Phantom II gave rise to the popularity of multirole fighters in parallel with the advances marking the so-called fourth generation." - wikipedia

Here's some Argie CAS plane that was used during the Falklands. I quite like the look of it.
