I prefer side sword and buckler myself, parrying with a dagger seems difficult. Although I guess its more practical to carry a dagger than a buckler if you're just going around town.

You can if you carry a dagger/short sword in the same hand.
Anyway, I believe a dagger was coupled with the rapier because it was more adept at catching and redirecting/binding against the thrust.

I'm not the one who said that. I'm impartial to either side. I think a spear has great range one handed with a shield or two hands but if you get in that guard the sword is much better. It all depends on the skill of the fighter.

Pike formations stopped men at arms, because, you know, stopping horses and that. Bill and Halberd formations are different. Archers were what might stop pike formations however. When fighting pike vs pike, it's much worse and yeah, they'll get fucked, but it changes quite a bit.

Spear is a perfectly valid weapon.
The reason why you usually hear of them being used in formations while swords are said to be favoured by individual combatants is that swords are more comfortable to carry around as a self-defence weapon.
