Apparently Kontakt-5 ERA was surprisingly effective against 80's NATO anti-tank weapons.

So /K. Was there any other soviet weapons that would have been a nasty surprise for NATO?

Warsaw pact thread I suppose.

Some more info.

> Jane's International Defence Review 7/2007, pg. 15:

"Pentagon correspondent Leland Ness explained that US Army tests involving firing trials on 25 T-72A1 and 12 T-72B1 tanks (each fitted with Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armour [ERA]) had confirmed NATO tests done on other former Soviet tanks left behind in Germany after the end of the Cold War. The tests showed that the ERA and composite Armour of the T-72s was incredibly resilient to 1980s NATO anti-tank weapons"

"During the tests we used only the weapons which existed with NATO armies during the last decade of the Cold War to determine how effective such weapons would have been against these examples of modern Soviet tank design. Our results were completely unexpected. When fitted to the T-72A1 and B1 the 'heavy' ERA made them immune to the DU (Depleted Uranium) penetrators of the M829A1 APFSDS (used by the 120 mm guns of the Cold War era US M1 Abrams tanks), which are among the most formidable of current tank gun projectiles. We also tested the 30mm GAU-8 Avenger (the gun of the A-10 Thunderbolt II Strike Plane), the 30mm M320 (the gun of the AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter) and a range of standard NATO Anti Tank Guided Missiles – all with the same result of no penetration or effective destruction of the test vehicles. The combined protection of the standard armour and the ERA gives the Tanks a level of protection equal to our own"

Is slapping on ERA plates the modern equivalent of pic related?
>>

Actual truth in this tests or the usual 'Fund better equipment now!' shenanigans.

Anyone with better knowledge or info regarding this?

You what? Werent the soviet military complaining about it? Rather unreliable compared to its paper specs.

Regarding sandbags during WW2 I have heard that it offered some protection against shaped charges (such as panzerschrecks). However made kinetic energy penetrators worse.

STEEL PANTHERS THREE all over again
play as west Germany and the t-80 had era on the frontal armor, I lined up Jaguar 2 and leopard 2a4 facing it full frontal still would not kill it

Pretty much, accept ERA is much more effective against HEAT rounds. Also look like that crew welded some additional armor on the lower plate.

It can also be noted that most ATGMs in the 80s were not tandem yet and the M829A2 and so on were not produced yet

Here is a rare pic.

Ukranian T-72s with their version of Kontact-5, not as effective and are only prototypes that got pressed into service just last year. Very, important to note that these are not the same model that the Separatists have and are they only ones of their kind. As in, The separatists never captured this kind.

We should have a big Steel Panthers brigade on brigade game, with a /k/ommando for each battalion

Nice. I played that campaign as well and had a really hard time with those fucking T-80BVs. They were pretty much immune to all APFSDS and ATGMs frontally, best chance was to kill them with flanking shots or let them get real close and then hit them with my 120 mm L/44 guns on the Leoapard 2s.

Surprisingly, the HOT-3 equipped Jaguars were extremely good in that game, not sure if glitch...

But yeah, I got raped.

Their BMPs and all other vehicles were pretty much cannon fodder and I picked them off like helpless ants.

Yes, except that ERA actually worked.

I just remember playing the one Pact advance scenario where there's just four M1IPs on a ridge hull down and you have a few dozen tanks and IFVs and you have to push through before NATO reinforcements arrive. The AI would just use it's artillery for counter battery and occasionally throw out smoke, so your stuff couldn't see shit but the Brads and M1s saw right through the smoke with their superior optics. That was a fucking nightmare to play, especially the late 80's version where even your T-80s got chewed up by then M1A1s and the worst part was that NATO had FASCAM and shitloads of DPICM which just ruined your day.

Man, Steel Panthers MBT was such a fun game though.

The R-73 + the helmet targetting system. It changed WVR combat forever.
