What's the best all around handgun caliber for self-defense, hunting, and survival on distant unknown planets?

I'm asking for a friend
>>
10mm +P.
>>
.44 magnum from a Ruger Redhawk. Strongest revolver frame there is, you can shoot loads as hot as you want, pretty much.

You can CC it, OC with style, home defense like a boss, and you can even hunt with it... AND put a scope on it.

Plus you can get a .44 magnum lever gun and have a rifle and pistol with matching calibers.

.45 Colt can do the same thing, though.... Plus you can get a Ruger chambered in .454, and shoot both from it while getting a .45 Colt lever gun.

Both of those can achieve amazing power levels from rifles and strong revolvers. You can literally hunt a grizzly with those revolvers, too.

10mm.
Takes down a bear or a man or a fishman from planet x. If it breathes it's likely not going to have a good time after it takes 135 grains at 1400 fps
It will tear anything that lives a brand new asshole to shit out it's internal organs through.
Check out the glock 20
>>
>>27921100

>+P 10mm

And here we observe the typical ignorance associated with 10mm fanboys in action.
>>
>>27921207

You can also buy a buffalo bore barrel and fire hard cast 230 grains slugs through it at 1150 fps. It's .44 magnum energy that can be delivered in a semi-automatic platform with large magazines.
>>
>>27921219

I was using +P to refer to full power and/or hand loaded ammo. I am aware that there is no ammunition in 10mm that is in excess of spec.

Thanks for being a cunt.
>>
>>27921274

Then why would you say +P, which is the identifier for over-spec ammunition instead of simply saying full-power 10mm loads?

Is it because you made a genuine mistake, or you're another 10mm fan-cunt with no real understanding of in-flight and terminal ballistics spewing memes?
>>
>>27921234

>10mm approaching .44 magnum energy

Every.

Fucking.

Time.

Some tripfag buried 10mm fan boys making this claim a while back. The tl;dr is that the hottest 10mm loads can barely bite at the ankles of the weakest .44 magnum loads.

inb4 well this super special 10mm loads has 8 more joules of energy than this super weak .44 hand load
>>
>>27921287
not him but very curious, is the .45 a better all around choice than the 10mm? i heard 10mm had more firepower and range, but is painful to the ears and too much recoil.
>>
>>27921042
Impossible to say since you would have no idea what kind of life you might encounter. I would bring a small variety of rounds including .22lr, 9mm, .45acp, and .44 Mag to be prepared for anything. Also, I would disregard concealment for the most part because it's unlikely that anything on the planet will know from seeing your gun that you are armed. So take a rifle in addition.
>>
>>27921314

may I ask which .45 caliber round you are referring to?
>>
>>27921330
i guess the strongest one, the .45 super. [i think thats the strongest, not sure]
>>
>>27921234
Yankee Marshall would like a word with you.
>>
>>27921234

now I'm a 10mm fan..... but that's bullshit, it's somewhere between .357 and .41 magnum
>>
>>27921336

technically you're looking for the .46 magnum

357 mag
>>
>>27921336
You mean .45-70?
>>
>>27921396
not sure, whatever the strongest .45 bullet is. i wanna know if it holds up against the glock 20.
>>
10mm because it has the capacity of 9mm and the power of 357 mag
>>
>>27921410

This is an asinine question.

A .454 Casull is a .45 caliber projectile that will utterly fucking smoke ANY 10mm in terms of paper ballistics. And that's not even accounting for .45 caliber rifle cartridges like the .45-70 GOV'T that was invoked.
>>
>>27921423
well excuse for me being new and curious.
>>
>>27921396
Shot a .45-70 Government out of an Alaskan Survival Derringer.
Heck of a round.
>>
>>27921042
7.62x51
>>
>>27921470

>handgun caliber
>>
>>27921494
>manlet
>>
>>27921344
I'm having too much fun.

In all seriousness though, .44 is the heavier and faster round. The only downside, if you can't get a rifle chambered in the same, is the ammo capacity. Which isn't a big deal if you carry a speed loader.

Oh my bad, I thought this meaningless thread based entirely on opinions was lighthearted.

And yes, an AR10 pistol would be more effective at killing a mother fucker than anything in this thread.
So, fuckboy, 7.62x51 would be an absolutely fantastic caliber for self defense.
>>
>>27921595

>AR-10 "pistol"

You know you're desperate to be right on the internet when you're using ATF verbiage to defend your argument.
>>
>>27921601
An AR10 with a 15.5" barrel and a shockwave brace would be the best all around pistol to defend yourself with, capacity being the only downside.
It might not carry or conceal that well, but OP didnt ask for that.
And its not ATF verbage, its a semiauto magazine fed firearm meant to be fired with 1 hand. How else would you define a handgun?
>>
>>27921625

>Still using ATF definitions to defend himself

Hilarious.
>>
>>27921625

>15.5 inch barrel
>Handgun

The other guy is right you're a fucking idiot backed into a corner.
>>
>>27921637
>"Im upset about the correct answer"
>>
>>27921655
barrel length has nothing to do with the definition of a handgun.
>>
>>27921301
Fucking this.

Even your Buffalo Bore/Underwood/handloads-that-won't-KB a-S&W-boatanchor 10mm loads don't even match run of the mill.44spl or .41mag factory loads.

Meanwhile .44mag rapeanything specialty (factory, such as Buffalo Bore) loads are approaching .454cas levels of energy while retaining good penetration because they're not having to resort to underpenetrating 135gr bullets to do it.

You want revolver-magnum power in an autoloader? .45super does about the same as 165gr 10mm on energy and can be fired through many unmodified .45acp guns, .460 rowland is middle-of-the-pack-.44mag territory while retaining heavy bullets (200-230gr), and .440 Corbon is in .45-70-from-rifle territory from a 5" barrel. Hell even .400corbon is hotter than 10mm while retaining 165gr+ bullets.
>yes I know mag capacity with .440corbon is abysmal since it's a bottleneck .50AE
>yes I know you'll be giving up 2ish rounds of capacity over 10mm but you're gaining a CRAPLOAD of energy with all but .45super, which was only included since it requires no modification to the .45acp firearm
>>
>>27921327
lol this.
>bring humongous fucking low-mid capacity handgun in a rapetastic caliber
>hostile lifeforms are rat-sized and either poisonous/infectious or use swarm tactics
Honestly, this is like the ONE role a Five-seveN wouldn't totally suck at. 30rd extended mag in case you need to pop a shitload of varmints, AP ammo so you could flee to a rifle in case you encounter a large rapemonster. Assuming you have access to all the actually-not-horrendous rounds available in 5.7, of course. But hey, if you're going to an unexplored, potentially hostile planet I'm assuming that once you get the space travel figured out getting hands on some only-sorta-banned ammo shouldn't be too hard.
>>
>>27921336
Strongest .45 available in a handgun would be the .460 S&W Magnum (yes it's actually .45 caliber, specifically .452").

Strongest WIDELY AVAILABLE .45 available in an AUTOLOADING handgun would be .45 Super, and .460 Rowland (.451" bullet diameter) is it's big, mean uncle but much scarcer.
>>
>>27921410
>someone makes a .458 Lott pistol for spess exploration
Well, you'd kill your target. But you'd liquefy your wrists.
>>
>>27921625
>take AR10 pistol in real fuckin' NATO
>replace barrel with .338 Federal barrel
>receive even better "pistol" for killing xeno scum
FYI, .338Fed does better out of short barrels than .308win. Will have more ME from a 10" barrel than .308win does from a 16" barrel. And of course you're throwing a bigger bullet.
>other option is .325WSM or .338RCM for far more energy, but those only fit single-stack since they're fat little bastards.
>>
Sure is Squid-y up in here
>>
>>27921287

Because I made a genuine mistake and was thinking about the lack of an ammo system in Fallout 4. Don't know why those made me herpaderpa. I understand 10mm is 37500 psi which is max safe pressure according to SAAMI.
