It's done, /k/! A few people asked me to post details once I had it done and running well. .308 AR, shoots 1" with dodgy ammo at 100 yards without a proper rest, cycles and functions well now that it's broken in (took about 30 rounds and some very aggressive oiling). Cost $800, including shipping and FFL fee, then about $120 in tools. Scope and rings are ones I had lying around. Mags not included.
>>
>>30022825
That looks gorgeous.
>>
>>30022825
Looks like a thing. Parts?
>>
>>30022825
Uses SR-25 mags. Had to grind them a little to get them to fit; just took some material off the back of the magwell. Break in was a bitch, as the barrel and bolt are from different manufacturers, and the lockup was so tight it took some wearing in. Headspaced fine. Parts list, including shipping and FFL fee where appropriate:

Stripped blem upper- 70 PSA
Stripped blem lower -100 PSA
Buffer tube kit -40 Delta Team Tactical
20" HBAR -121 Anderson
Forend and buttstock -100 Boyd (X-Mas)
LPK -72 PSA
Forward assist -15 PSA
Ejection port kit -14 PSA
BCG -141 WCArmory

Muzzle brake and jam nut 26
Gas block and handguard cap 16

$77 for
Charging Handle
Gas tube
Barrel nut
Delta ring
Weld spring
Snap ring

Total $792
+40 for wrench and torque wrench
+40 for armorer's tool
+75 for Bean scope
+20 for rings
>>
>>30022892
When I say the lockup was tight, I mean it would cycle .308, but 7.62x51 didn't have the oomph to fully travel rearward. It'd eject fine, but fail to feed the next round, and lock up so fucking tight it took 2 hands to open the fucking bolt. Lubed the shit out of it and removed a burr, now it cycles great.
>>
>>30022892
Looks fucking beautiful. You've convinced me to get off my ass and start buying parts for one.

Back to my desktop, got more pictures.

Using PSA uppers and lowers means most of it is DPMS spec, which means mostly AR-15 parts. MUCH cheaper than other manufacturers, and it opens up a lot of parts options. It does lead to some confusion, though.

For instance, a regular AR-15 armorer's tool takes care of 90% of the work on the rifle, including the barrel nut (using the free float tube bits). However, since the barrel is thicker at the nut than an AR-15 barrel, unless the mouth of the wrench is also wider, it won't fit. So, I bought a torque wrench and armorer's tool combo for $40, and the tool didn't fit. So, I had to buy a different wrench; the Tapco wrench worked well.

Thank you, gentlemen. A few other points-

-Laminate wood is WAY cheaper than walnut, although maybe not as good looking in an "NCR Service Rifle" type build. I think it's still tasteful in this setup, though; not quite "tacticool."

-Amazon can be a great place for cheap parts. The muzzle brake and jam nut were only $20; just follow reviews. If there are no reviews, don't touch it.

-It is actually possible (although I didn't do it) to free float a barrel and still use split handguards. There's a part designed for use in National Match shoots specifically for the purpose; pic related. However, it ain't cheap.

Also, stylewise, a rifle length build beats the hell out of an M4 style black build. Fugly little things. Probably kicks like a damn mule.

Not posting in /arg/ b/c it's purely a containment thread. /brg/ seems alright, tho.

Someone brought up Windham Weaponry rifles in a previous thread. Not sure I like the look.

Clarifications on the parts:
-Most of the parts were on sale when I bought them; I spent about 8 months assembling this thing to keep the costs down
-BCG was made by Toolcraft
-Shipping prices are included in the numbers given
-Barrel used .750" diameter gas block and handguard ring
-LPK was a standard LPK, plus PSA's "PA-10 upgrade kit," since there are 4 proprietary parts in a PA-10 lower
-the muizzle brake is now out of stock, although it was found on Amazon. Knocks the breath out of anyone too close who's not behind the rifle!
>>
What scope is that?
>>
>>30023234
More parts clarifications-

-gas block and handguard cap are also off Amazon
-the $77 list was all PSA
>>
>>30023251
Fuckin' kek'd... WTF is all that... lol

>>30023254
One I had lying around. L.L. Bean tried doing a house brand scope, the same way Nikon and Bushnell do it: give it a lifetime warranty, and farm it out to a Chinese optics house. Difference is, people weren't willing to spend $300 on a Chinese scope from a company whose whole shtick was "high quality, made in America." Still a good scope, but by the time I encountered it, they had been discontinued and marked down by 50%. Then they got shipped to the outlet stores, who were having a 50% Hunting sale. So, $75 for a 1.5-8x 40mm (weird fucking numbers, right?) that really is quite good. Haven't had anything to keep it on yet, though.

Pic- same stocks on an AR-15. I only wish they'd make a carbine model that's somehow adjustable.

Random earlier pic. Here, the handguards were held on with tape, although the lower and upper were assembled. Barrel held on by friction only.

Irons would be pointless with my eyes. My right eye is something like 20/400, left eye is 20/100. Left eye dominant, right handed. I used over/under sight rings so I can sight along the barrel at very close targets, but with my eyes, irons are almost useless. I shoot fine right handed with a scope, but with irons or unmagnified optics I have to shoot lefty. That leads to right sided ejection ports spraying my glasses with gun oil with every shot. No plans for a bipod, but there are bayonet mounts that can attach to the underside of the gas block.

i have shitty eyesight too but i can use irons well enough with glasses. is this gonna be a battle rifle or more dmr? im guessing battle rifle if you want to mount a bayonet,
>>
>>30024343
The bayonet question was relative to bipods. As far as "battle rifle or dmr", the answer is no. Just a fun target rifle build. No real higher purpose. My local range is building a 400 yard range, and I wanted something that could hit at that range.

Just an FYI, semi-auto 308's are known to beat the ever loving piss out of scopes, so if yours stops holding a zero...don't be surprised.

All that said, good job on the build. I did this for $950 without the scope/mount.

This is the only good thing to have ever come out of California's stupid gun laws.

Too bad the fucking senate just passed through a bill to make all detachable mag semi-auto rifles illegal, with specific prohibition for bullet buttons and the like. Hopefully Jerry keeps up his record of not being retarded about guns and vetoes it.

i know. i live here. i'm waiting to see how it turns out, if he vetoes it i'm gonna get my scr and do a build like this

>thick case mouth is usually what causes this
It happened even when there were no rounds in place. Plus, wear was evident on the bcg.
>>
>>30027294
Ah
My friends Rem 700 had problems with x51 cause the thicker case mouth over the bullet caused it to wedge slightly
>>
>>30027316
Interesting. I wonder If that's why the x51 wasn't cycling as well as the .308. I just assumed it was only because the x51 was less powerful and the lockup was still too tight.
