It was some time a few hours ago. If you stayed logged in when they banned IPs you still should be able to play, but if you quit and try to relog it won't work.

Wait. What?!

That better not be true.
>>
>>15383837
Unfortunately it is. I just spectated matches with a Japanese VPN.
>>
So what was the motive behind banning non japanese IPs? I don't see why a reason why they would do it.
>>
>>15383871
All I could think of is maybe a ddos, and they banned all foreign IPs to stop it.

I don't think this will be permanent. Tsuno has always seemed pretty friendly towards us gaijins. I even vaguely remember him wanting to put out an english version at one point.
>>
>>15383871
>>15383881
Hopefully, this is temporary. In the meantime, we can direct people over to Sega if anyone is itching to play now.
>>
>>15383881
I hope that is the case. 4chan has a similar case last night were they blocked Russian IPs for a bit of time before letting them back in. I'm fairly sure a good number of non Japanese people pay for the client as well, so they would just lose out on revenue.

I just started getting into Mahjong and this has kind of shocked me a bit.

>>

i dunno, i just met him recently and that's kinda old, maybe he's more mature now that he's a father or something like that, or maybe he's less of an asshole in person or maybe i just didn't have the time to have him be an asshole to me. whatevs.

I don't know, the guy made a dumb move and then got defensive in the comments, making negative assumptions about someone else over it. He's hardly innocent. I don't blame him for getting upset, no one likes to be criticized, but it wasn't as elegant as you make it out to be.

That said, I understand why people think xkime's an ass at times after reading this. He does come off as opinionated, close-minded, and unempathetic when he's discussing things with others.

I really thought this was a good riichi, but it looks like I am mistaken. To rub even more salt on my wounds, I was ron'd a turn before I can tsumo the lone ton tile in the wall. Ended up 2nd because of this hand alone.
>>
>>15386022
Chitoitsu has no good riichi.
>>
>>15386036
East wasn't the round tile and the automatic response on early riichi like this is to discard the least dangerous tiles, i.e. my nonseat honor tiles, which is exactly what happened but unfortunately the ton wouldn't drop at all and as I expected two of them were on the dead wall. I could've gone without riichiing here because I was in the lead but it was just to good of a wait to skip.
>>
>>15386022
That's unlucky. I think you shouldn't have riichi'd though, that hand has a lot of potential. Honitsu, Toitoi, even Shosangen or Tsu Ii Sou.
>>
>>15386054
Still not a good riichi. You're waiting on only 3 tiles, hoping your opponents have them and will drop one and also hoping for the wall not to screw you if your opponents don't have any. Too much hoping = not a good riichi.

Chitoitsu has no good riichi.
>>
>>15386062
>only 3 tiles
Not to mention it's 3 tiles of ONE type.
>>
>>15386054
>least dangerous tiles, i.e. my nonseat honor tiles

I thought this only applies to ippan? Not so sure though.
>>
>>15386055
>>15386062
>>15386102
I can't take it back so I'll just take it as a lesson learned. I had the lead so I should've taken a step back and let them play themselves.
>>
>>15386106
For what it's worth I think riichi'ing chi toi is fine, especially on tiles likely to come out. You probably would've won that hand if the other two weren't in the dead wall. But doing it without any dora isn't worth it most times, doesn't pay off very well unless you get lucky.
>>
>>15386022
There's no problem at all with calling riichi here. It's still only S1, you've only got a 3400 point lead, your wait is strong, and you get to cut off last place's dealer turn. There's no need to open up your hand by calling, because not only does it take you back shanten (which you should almost never do) but it significantly restricts your hand by making you reliant on being able to call the rest of your tiles, and it also makes your hand a lot easier to read.

>>15386062
>Chitoitsu has no good riichi.
This is plain wrong. Chiitoitsu's greatest advantage is its unpredictability. The only real way to defend against it is to discard only 100% safe tiles, which is especially difficult to do against a second turn riichi.

On top of that, dama chiitoitsu nomi is trash beyond trash. Riichi raises the expected value of your hand by a lot thanks to the possibility of tsumo and uradora, and it also applies pressure on the other players. You'd generally only dama chiitoitsu if you have already dora, if you really don't need the points, or if it's late in the round and you need to be defensive.
>>
>>15385928
Imagine yourself trying to discuss Yugioh TCG strategies and decks seriously while having to deal with the dozens of weeb comments about "the heart of the cards". You start sounding opinionated very quickly, and at one point you just stop caring and only say what you have to say, no sugar coating.
>>
>>15385905
The truth is that lately he's way too busy to be as big of an asshole as he wants to be.

Hi, Pat.
>>
>>15386294

>>
>>15386114
This is mostly correct. From what I've seen though, if you riichi in the last few rounds people tend to panic and throw non round winds almost every time. I catch a lot of people in Tokujou pulling this stunt with ippatsu for haneman or baiman.

This however does not work with suji traps which are ignored.

>>
>>15386294
The guy saying in the comments that he would discard a winning kokushi tile just to win on a furiten kokushi 13 is beyond idiotic
>>
>>15389603
I've definitely considered it. Not that I've had the chance and once I learned it wouldn't count as a double yakuman it seemed pretty pointless.
>>
>>15389619
Well, if it counted as a double yakuman it would make sense, but it doesn’t! So why would someone do it? Just to say they had a kokushi 13? They didn't
>>
I got daisuushi earlier this year, but my wait was 5man and south. Having called the other 3 winds.

I was pissed when I saw it come up as a standard yakuman, but no way in fuck would I have let that 5man slip by should it pop up
>>
>>15389695
I'd probably get greedy and go for tsuuiisou at that point.
>>
>>15389638
In Tenhou yeah it makes no sense. In a normal game then double yakuman on 38 winning tiles sounds pretty enticing.

234pin discard for tenpai, but toimen and kamicha clearly hogging pinzu

Chun is live

234man too close to dora

678pin seem marginally safer.

Honestly speaking, wwd posts are always situations where the player got punished for pushing and everyone rolls in with their hindsight "I totally would have played it safe" comments. I wish folks would post more nuanced settings and recommendations

Toss 4 to max out your points on a bad wait. Get ron'd, tell us about it.

I know he got lucky and drew it right afterwards but 3p is very questionable when you have a better, wider wait available. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to wait on it when you look at everyone else's discards and see none of them have dropped any pinzu except for south.

It's safe because the other guy in riichi kept discarding honour tiles and the other 2 were thrown already so it would be a weird hell wait for a shitty hand.
>>
>>15397171
None of them are great, but 4m might be your best bet. It's double suji for both riichis, although there's a very real possibility that south could have a 3-4-5 sanshoku.
>>
>>15397171
4m is double suji, I would throw that. It doesn't look like it'll pass against kamicha though.
>>
>>15397219
4m is safe against kamicha. It passed 3 turns earlier and his hand hasn't changed since then.
>>
>>15397171
8m, since it's safe against the kamicha and it would be worse to deal in to him than dealing in to the toimen.
>>
>>15396753
truly excelent game. i think you risked too much with that honitsu dora 3, but it worked so kudos
>>
>>15397534
Thanks.

Whenever I'm on a roll, I find it better to push, even if it's risky. It really depends on the situation, but if you just won big, a lot of times the other players will be on guard and more likely to fold against your pushes, specially as a dealer. So if by pushing you get them to fold, it could actually decrease the chances of you dealing in.

Of course, it doesn't always go like that. In that game they kept on pushing all the way, which is why it was so fun. Everyone was going all out.

ASAPIN (the first Tenhoui) has been doing a stream for a while with a new account and has been rising though the ranks again. He's currently at 5 dan in Tokujou and the next stream is tomorrow.

Don't know if you need an account, but you probably do.

https://abemafresh.tv/search/%E3%83%92%E3%83%AB%E3%83%94%E3%83%B3%E3%83%87%E3%82%B9 has a lot of the old streams at horrifying eye-cancer quality.

It can take more than 20 minutes to get a game in houou during Japanese off hours. Even when it's a bit more active than that extreme, I can imagine people queuing in tokujou just so they get a damn game going.

I do wonder what the proportion of 7dan+ players that don't have premium is, though.

For what it's worth, my read was on south, not the west player who actually had the sanshoku. I can walk you through what I was thinking, if you like. First of all, I was trying to think of reasons why my preferred tile, 4m, wouldn't pass. It was double suji because 1m and 7m passed, meaning the only other waits we'd have to worry about are closed 4m and shanpon 4m.

If south had a 3m-4m-4m before he riichi'd and were waiting on 4m shanpon, he would have just dealt the 4m for an edge wait. But if he had, for example, an 1-shanten shape with 3m-3m-5m and another edge wait, he could have dealt the 3m and be waiting for closed 4m. The threat of a 4m closed wait is slightly increased because we can't see the red 5m and because of the possiblity of sanshoku. These are both scenarios where you'd want to wait on the 4m instead of shanpon.

So then, is there any hint that south might have a sanshoku in the 3-4-5 vein? His 4th - 6th discards stood out to me. Dropping 1s-2s and then the 3p made me think of this scenario; let's say he has in his hand, before discarding the 1s, this:

1s-2s-3s-4s-5s and 3p-3p-4p. He drops 1s, leaving him with 2s-3s-4s-5s and 3p-3p-4p. 2-3-4 and 3-4-5 sanshoku are still possible. Dropping the 2s next turn leaves him with 3s-4s-5s. Dropping 3p next turn leaves him with 3p-4p. We can't rule out sanshoku because we can't see all four of any one tile in 3-4-5. So after going through all of this in my head, I thought it was very possible for him to have a sanshoku.

In reality, he had nothing like that. Instead, west had all of the tiles for it, and his discards didn't hint at it at all. If reading waits were something you could do reliably then betaori wouldn't exist. All you can do is try to make educated guesses based on what you can/can't see in the pond.
>>
>>15405208
You're on the right track by imagining the possible hand shapes that fit the discards, but it's far more likely that the 12s penchan and the 3p were isolated tiles rather than parts of a complex shape, especially considering it was still only the fourth turn.

Besides which, discarding 12s from 12345s is effectively the same as discarding 45s in that you lose the 36s ukeire. If he started with 12345s344p, then what other six tiles in his hand would make him want to discard 12s3p without going back shanten, without putting him in tenpai earlier than the 3m discard, and while still keeping the manzu and pinzu shapes from which he discarded 9p and 3m?
>>
>>15405318
I could easily imagine him doing so if he wanted to build towards a tanyao hand he could call with. You say you think it's more likely they're isolated tiles, but discarding a tatsu from within your hand before an isolated 3p goes against that.
>>
>>15405333
Go ahead and fill in the rest of his hand in such a way that it makes sense, then. And discarding a penchan before an isolated 3 or 7 is by no means uncommon.
>>
>>15405353
And doing so will prove what exactly?

How do you actually run tenhou with applocale? It seems to me that the only way to actually get tenhou running is to run the shortcut that's created when you install, and my applocale will not run shortcuts in japanese locale. I've had to change my actual system's locale to Japanese in order to get rid of the mojibake.

Yeah, I'm encountering the same problem. The original .exe is in Appdata and won't run if you launch it from there, it only runs when launched from the shortcut, and applocale doesn't apply on the shortcut, while it also won't run on the original exe.

>Ippatsu

Why is it that retarded risks always seem to work out for these fucks but I can't even discard the 3rd guest wind during riichi without dealing in
>>
>>15431698
This is pretty difficult. The only thing I will say for sure is we shouldn't give suuankou a single thought. If we push, we riichi. Our hand is expensive, our wait is decent and we're in last place. Given our lack of safe tiles, we might very well end up dealing in anyway, providing further justification.

I feel like I ended up convincing myself that riichi is the way to go, but I would not criticise anyone who would discard 2p, and—honestly—that might very well be what I'd do myself if I was actually presented with the situation. With a bit of luck, the hand can return from that into fighting shape, too.
>>
>>15432352
Pursuit riichis aren't always seen as risky by other players. Sometimes your hand is so transparent that the other guy figures he's got more chances than you do. It's even worse if he's actually got a feel for the flow. And of course, waiting on a useless honor tile is a basic trap, but you dealing into it is due to your bad luck since you were in riichi. That's shouganai.
What was that strong ryanmen wait by the way?

The mahjong gods (or rather kamicha's chi) decided to give you the honor of drawing the haitei tile but you didn't win off of it and now must discard something. What'll it be?
>>
>>15435608
The only reason you'd ask is because 3p dealt in. You just got unlucky.
>>
>>15435608
just drop that 3 and get the tenpai reward. that 3p is pretty safe. all 1p are out so no one is in penchan; all the 2p and three 4p are out so there's no possible kanchan neither; and all the 5p are out too so there's no possible 45p ryanmen. also there's two other 3p out so it's not shanpon.
there's still the chance of tanki, and if you're asking this I have to assume that's what happened, but that's a remote possibility and 3p is still safer than any of the other tiles you have. if you dealt in with the 3p it's not your fault, you did right, but we all know that mahjong rewards consistency in making the right decisions and not every single right decision.
>>

3p has only one wait available, 3p hell wait. Dealing it also lets us keep our tenpai so we don't have to make payments.

There's really no other option that makes sense. 2m is near the dora and there's still a possibility for someone to have a 2m-5m edge wait. 3m is the dora, and 3m-6m edge wait is still possible. For the same reason we don't want to deal 4m-7m.

3p seems like the best option. What happened?
