Criminal justice isn't just meant to vent your anger on the criminal. It's intended primarily to make society safer, and having long and harsh US-style sentences greatly increases recidivism (if you weren't a real criminal before, chances are you will be after experiencing US prison), which in the long run decreases safety for society. Keeping him locked up for 15 years in a harsh environment has a higher chance of him stabbing her again; I'd rather have him face only 5 years in a less harsh environment, even if isn't 'the punishment he deserves', if it reduces the chance of him stabbing people again.

One of the amusing things about 'actually it's cheaper to keep them alive for life' is that it neglects to take into account the mounting medical costs on the state to keep an ageing convict population alive. Those costs go up dramatically as the prisoners start becoming geriatrics.
At any rate, I'm happy she survived, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if she wanted out of the idol scene entirely after this, and to be honest I wouldn't blame her for her choice.
