It might look decrepit, but this is what a normal end of winter should look like. The mud's only on this side of the block, on the other side there are probably shops open and there's no mud or it's frozen.
After living for most of my life in such places I wonder how come the west (e.g. USA, UK, Canada, France, Germany, etc.) prefer to live in suburbs in houses. Where the nearest shop's probably half an hour away and you probably can't go on foot or it would look odd if you walked, everyone has to pretend to look normal by mowing their lawn and making a facade, there's no one to call to help you fix a water heater and watch a football game with some moonshine and you have to spend a fortune just to keep the whole house warm during the winter. Hell, no wonder people can't make friends in the suburbs and all the kids grow up as spergs.

The irony here is that the "education" bit of American collages is actually free if you're willing to walk into the lectures sober; it's the sheet of paper you're having to pay for, and without it, your education is worth well, the amount you payed for it.
>>
>>15325212
>simple reason, no need for those cultural philosophical over-analyses
In most cities in my home country, renting within the city boundaries is significantly cheaper than owning property. A lot cheaper if you're willing to forego a car.

I lived in the capital city (Ottawa) and paid about $900 for a clean one-bedroom apartment in a decent neighbourhood next to a grocery store, druggist, and major bus line.

A friend of mine who bought a house in an economically depressed part of the country has to pay roughly 200% of what I paid, not including unpredictable expenses like repairs. That includes property taxes, home heating oil, higher property insurance, and other expenses associated with time lost maintaining the property.
>>
>>15332660
>without it, your education is worth well, the amount you payed for it.
A lot of programming courses give skills for jobs that often hire primarily based on previous experience.

Of course, most of the information is already online, and you often need to be a paying student if you want to access university resources such as computer labs, face-to-face tutoring, or checking out books from the library.

As of now, you can read the Latin alphabet. The two other important alphabets to know, as a westerner, are the Greek alphabet and the Cyrillic alphabet. The Cyrillic alphabet has many variants though, so specifically go pick the Russian variant for now.
Learning the Greek and Russian Cyrillic alphabets is as easy as learning hiragana and katakana. Maybe easier.
>>
>>15341993
Learning the Russian alphabet takes like five minutes at best. But learning the alphabet is usually the easiest part of learning languages from my experience.
>>
>>15342552

>>
>>15344982
probably has to do something with your own native language, in a lot of languages c rarely becomes 'ch'

sirno still sounds really silly and people should learn out of it
>>
>>15344982
There's no real standard for how to pronounce Cirno. I just alternate between "sir-no" and "cheer-no".

ZUN also spells her name as チルノ in Japanese, where each phonetic component is "CHI-RU-NO", so there may be that.
>>
>>15345007
chiruno is the correct way, there's no question about that
>>
>>15344982
Russian "Syrno" is intentional joke created by some fags from IIchan.hk back in 2008.
Their admin loves Touhou shit and Syrno is used as default name in their /b/.

I don't recall there being any 'official' way of pronouncing Cirno's name, and in almost if not every English-speaking part of the world the letter 'c' is pronounced as 's'. I personally read it as 'Chirno' and believe it should be read that way.
>>
>>15344982
It's pronounced that way in English (think circus and circulation) and most people learned who Cirno was mentally vocalized it "Sirno" years before their weeb power level was high enough to know the actual pronunciation.
>>
>>15345024
Usually, it makes little sense to pronounce obviously (?) non-Japanese names spelled in katakana the Japanese way.

If everyone learns English, the variety on Earth will decrease. I think only people who want to learn English should learn it. Language learning should be entirely voluntary for everyone on Earth.

Huh, I've left the old country so long ago that I completely forgot about kompót. Thankfully I still know how to make it (not like I couldn't just google it anyway), so thanks for reminding me.

How could you drink that dude? It was a nightmare in kindergarten because the only things they would feed you were kompot and that horrible mannaya kasha.

All I got to drink was rhubarb kompot.
>>
>>15355069
By not having it every damn day and not made from shit quality fruit.
Honestly though, drinking it wasn't exactly why I loved it. It was more like the ending act of eating the fruit.

>kindergarten
I wish we got kompot instead of the few grains of half cooked rice in tepid milk every day. That shit was what made me loathe the soviets, not the politics and economy.

>mannaya kasha
I loved it as a child. With industrial amounts of sugar and cocoa powder on top of course. It was even more heavenly after letting it cool in the fridge overnight, but of course kids are too impatient for that.

And?
Small price to pay. They can keep their native language that can express what English cant. They just need to know a universal language so that everyone can communicate regardless of background. Communication is more important than variety. Plenty of variety among English speaking countries and those who speak English as a secondary language. Just look at 4chan to see that.
>>
>>15356077
>Small price to pay.
What the previous linguist anon is referring to is that certain languages are better or worse at expressing and facilitating certain thoughts because of how the language is structured.

I remember reading somewhere that English promotes behaviour that assigns blame. For instance, if I were to sit on a chair and the chair broke, an English speaker is more likely to say "Anon broke the chair" than, say, a Japanese speaker.

>Just look at 4chan to see that.
4chan is a tiny minority of people who have the incentive to learn English to a point where they can communicate in it effectively. And writing in English is a lot easier than having a coherent conversation in English.

Your typical peasant or factory worker or even office clerk has little to no incentive to spend hours learning and practising English when they can live comfortable lives in their own language.

The only alternative would be to force people to learn English, and anyone who has experience with Japanese high schoolers know that people forced to learn a language and have no reason to retain that knowledge will quickly forget what they've learned.

>/jp/ shouldn't be the designated shitting street anon.
I've always viewed /jp/ as more of a pig pen, where we constantly complain about other people pooping all over each other while we continue to wallow in our own filth abound do nothing to change it.

/jp/ should just be a place where kind hearted souls that like touhou and cancercolle and idols can take it easy and not have to deal with political propaganda memes like "poo in loo" or whatever.

Now, c'mere and I'll give you a big /jp/ hug of friendship...

>show that every language you know influences how you think.
Not only that, but how I speak as well. In English I tend to be terse, almost vulgar and in general quite informal. In my native language I'm way too wordy, slightly old fashioned and sarcastic. My German was neither of those and I tended to be polite to a fault (although I'm rusty as hell with it since I only use it to watch a movie every once in a while now).

He needs to work on his anatomy though.

I also appreciate his muscle girls. He draws actually fit touhous that don't look like steroid monkeys.
>>
>>15356309
I never noticed anything particularly bad about the anatomy, not on his recent pics at least. Pic related, an example of less-than-spectacular anatomy, was drawn a year ago.
Adding to your comment about muscle girls which I highly agree with, artists that draw fit touhous well is rather rare. I also rather like his fashion sense to be frank.

>>
>>15356190
There is no reason they cant hold on to their original language to keep their expressions. Just learn English for dealing with foreigners.
>>
>>15356746
Adding to your point, I'd argue that the influence of a foreign language really comes from the cultural exposure rather than the language itself.
>>
>>15356077
Communication is easily possible without mandatory English. Promote having everyone be bilingual or trilingual in their favorite languages (which may actually include English, and that's OK) and the chain to get from one language to the next through people who know both languages will become much shorter.
The point is that people should choose which languages they learn, and learn the ones they love, and want to be invested in. That'll lead to the highest amount of success.
I'm not against learning English, I'm against the silly idea that other languages are not to be considered.
>>15356190
Good post.

>>15356746
Why English? Why not Spanish, French, Russian, or Latin?
>>15356768
No, psycholinguists have seen reproducible changes based solely on languages known.
The blame example given earlier, and also the way people pay attention to colors, plants, animals, inanimate objects, numbers, and more.

I love it when nice threads randomly delve into various topics with interesting conversation without becoming a trainwreck. Feels cosy and not at all like the larger boards.
>>

It's odd how some of the most interesting conversations are usually about off-topic things (at least, not about the topic(s) of that board). This happens in many boards, not just /jp/.
Sure does feel nice, though. It makes you feel at home, in a way, for me at least.

>It's almost like you can feel the passage of time.
I suppose this is obvious, but from someone who lives in a city where economic decay (and dysfunction) is kind of the norm, you really don't get to experience the magnitude of it until you live in a city where things are run relatively well.

I have to prevent myself from laughing at people who get legitimately angry over potholes the size of cell phones.
