I made a crappy drawing of Suwako and another of Koishi a long while ago, after that I decided that I actually wanted to git gud at drawing and picked up Loomis, haven't drawn anything other than the lessons since then.

Funny how Touhou inspired me to pick up two decent hobbies (Piano and drawing), yet I've made little progress on either of them due to getting distracted by the games.
>>
>>15293662
Yes, but if I post proof, /jp/ will probably only point out my faults and merely seek to roast me despite my greatest efforts to improve.

That's pretty good.
How did you learn to draw that well?
>>
>>15295540
Pretty much just self studied. Studied a few art books and at the same time tried to emulate some of my favourite artists.
Though I admit I meandered a lot through the art books. If I had taken it a bit more seriously at the start I probably would have seen more progress.

Huh. I sometimes trace some drawing(s) from either pixiv or in a manga to learn how the body & face is drawn. But I never upload them, they are for learning only & sometime off to the trash. Might show my original work(s). but as Corry/Nial said in one podcast "I see my work as an improvement everytime i draw" or as Stamper would say "I don't sit down and kiss my own ass over one thing I make each time."

You draw like a gradeschooler.
Try to draw real lines first, not chicken-scratches,
then learn basic perspective.
Also, try not to think of the lines and things that you draw as symbols for stuff, but as a representation of 3d objects, which occupy space.
But only if you actually want to improve.

Loomis is always a good start. Check out Figure Drawing for All it's Worth and Drawing the Head and Hands by him if you haven't already.
Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing Design and Invention is a fantastic book for teaching you how to build the body using shapes and gives you a brief look at some of the muscle groups/bones, particularly in the upper torso.
Vilppu's Drawing Manual, Bert Dodson's Keys to Drawing, anything by Burne Hogarth. George Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing form Life is a beast of a book that compiles all his different books into one though I've heard each individual section isn't as in-depth as the books they were originally from.
Honestly, just check out the /ic/ art book thread if you have the time. It has links to downloads in the OP and has far more recommendations than I could give.

>I don't use all of the tools so that makes me better
That's not how to competitive mentality. Being the best means using all the tools at your disposal. if anything, it's amateur to ommit things like erasers when you have it on hand.
Think of a samurai fight. Refusing to use a gun because "Guns are for the weak and unskilled" gets you killed by the man who IS using the gun.

You shouldn't lambaste or mock others when trying to appear as the better. Instead, you should be promoting yourself entierly.
Instead of saying
>erasing
>you're an amateur
You should be saying
>I don't erase, since I plan and draw so damn perfectly

remember. Being better than bad doesn't make you good. It makes you not bad.
Being better than good makes you great.

All this aside, this isn't sports or games or war or gambling. It's drawing. Drawing is almost exclusively born talent. Skill has little to do with it. You either can or cannot.

I don't know who t. is, but that sounds like he didn't understand that you have to have something you want to create in mind before you draw. Scribbles look like scribbles no matter who draws them, and 5 minutes isn't enough time to draw anything but scribbles.
>>
>>15335856
How new are you. I was saying the person I replied to is obviously a failure who never tried to actually get good at drawing and now spends his time telling people to give up so they can be losers like him.
Drawing is not something you're born good at. If it was there would be children creating masterpieces. Fuck off you daft cunts. You have to practice to get good. You need to have drive and enjoy drawing. It takes time.
>>
>>15336073
Well then what does Mr. T. have to do with this?
>>
>>15336073
This is me >>15335331 here.
I can draw well. I've never thought of giving up at any point. I, as much as you or any other drawer, can vouch what it takes, but I'm telling you and everyone else that good drawers are born. I was born naturally good at it.

Maybe it was rash of me to say
>You either can or cannot
But for me to claim that drawing is a skill is unacceptable. I never earned my talent. I was given it and I find it easy to improve as if it were natural. To then say that drawing takes skill implies that I am skilled and that I earned it all. That would be a lie and self promotion.

My post wasn't meant to cut down aspiring artists, but instead to make good drawers seem less Godly. I suppose I shouldn't have tried to explain myself in such a darwinist way.

>>15337171
Not at all, with practice and persistance anyone can master the basics you need to produce decent content. I can't for the life of me find it; but there's a compilation of drawings some did of Ran over a few years. It goes from having strange proportions and lacking depth of field to being quite good. That being said though the percieved "natural talent" some people have for drawing probably stems from that person being better able to visualise an object in space, which is something that is probably more dependant on the individual. Some people can do it easily, others struggle with the concept.

What they meant is to be more sure in your lines, rather than using multiple attempts to make the line you want. Erasing is perfectly fine, but it can become a crutch to your improvement.
By doing a lot of figure drawing and thinking more about what your'e going to draw and what the overall shape is going to be, you will improve far faster than making a bunch of thoughtless lines and erasing until you get the shape you want. I've asked my friends who went to art school for tips on improving and they all said the same thing, whether they went for animation or illustration. Solid, clear lines are important.
It's really hard to break out of that sketchy habit, but it can be done. Gesture drawings are a pain, but every artist I talk to swears by them for quick improvement.
Good luck and keep drawing, everyone!

Absolutely not. It's like picking up the guitar, you have to work hard on a regular basis to get good. Some people may improve faster, but it all comes down to hard work and the time put in.

Talent is a major factor. Some people are good at it right away while others can do it for years and not improve in the slightest.

I wish I could break out of sketchy lines. But my hand control is so horrific. My hand constantly makes slight movements. I can't even make straight lines and my hand writing looks like a deranged 5 year old's. I look at the hand writing of other people and I'm baffled at how they make it so clean even if they can't draw.

I hate to admit it, but my actual doodles are not far off from this level of "quality" (if you can even call it that)

I'm ashamed to admit... 7 years, I think?
2009 was about when I started taking drawing "seriously". Skimmed through Loomis just enough to pick up the loose basics of proportions and from there on just drew for the fun of it.
Doesn't feel like I've improved very much in these 7 years but like I said I slacked a lot and didn't take the fundamentals seriously enough. If you actually put some time and focus into your drawings I can guarantee you the road to becoming a decent artist will be much shorter than mine at the very least.

I don't know, man. I don't try because I'm not satisfied with my failed anatomy. I've always liked to draw since I was little, but never achieve what I want.

I think you make up for any flaws with cuteness. If you like drawing, you should do it. People should do what they enjoy.
I myself don't draw because I actually dislike drawing: I appreciate looking at the art of others, though.

Bandage Cirno is cute, but I think a girl would be more likely to scrape her elbow than the side of her arm.

True. At the time (2014) I guess I was worse with perspective, which is why it's on her arm instead of her elbow. Thanks for the insight regarding my sketches, last pic from me now.
