Natsuhi: Dumb, prideful, but a sweet and loyal wife. Would not kill for gold, regardless of her dislike for her rude family.

Rosa: Wrathful but just wants to live her youthful life - hates her siblings and would kill everyone, probably including the cousins, for gold. Still loves Maria because she's her daughter. Would probably be a loving wife.

Eva: Justifiably bitter and hates her siblings and father. Prideful and arrogant, but genuinely loves her husband, son, nieces, and nephews. Would only be able to kill her siblings and their partners. Would be a loving and faithful wife.

Kyrie: Psychopath. Cold and calculating. Intelligent, cool, and faithful, but you can never tell her true feelings or intentions - would kill everyone for gold, including the cousins and her own children.

>Van Dine 7: It is forbidden to have a crime without a corpse.
>Van Dine 11: It is forbidden for a servant to be the culprit.

>Van Dine 16: There is no need to include depictions that exceed the necessary in a story.

1 is alright. There are enough clues spread around.
7 is violated in the first episode--at least, this is the first I thought of. Shannon's corpse wasn't there, for obvious reasons. Oh, and Kanon's death later in episode 1.
11 is obviously violated.
12, I guess I can let this one go. The source I was using ( http://gaslight.mtroyal.ca/vandine.htm ) stated that there must only be one culprit for all the murders, outside of a minor helper that did not actually commit murder.
16 is stated otherwise in my source. This is alright.
>>
>>15292714
As a side note, 12 and 16 are only stated in the manga as far as I can tell. 1, 7 and 11 are stated in both the manga and the VN

Yasu was a servant prior to learning about Lion. This is shown during episode 7 (pic related), and elaborated upon in Confession.
After that, probably. But Genji and Kinzo confessing Yasu's true identity happened way later in her years, so she couldn't pretend to be one when she didn't even know she was the Head.
>>
>>15292809
Voiced scream for that scene was painful to hear from Beatrice's voice actress
>>
>>15292809
Of course, Yasu was a servant until Kinzo died, but after that she became the Head and might not count as a servant anymore. I'm not too sure about that though, but that's the only explanation I can think of for Rule 11 being stated in red
>>
>>15292714
Rule 7 could be alright depending on how you look at it. "A crime" could refer to the whole incident, and not each individual murder. In that case, it would be fine as long as at least one corpse was real

It's pretty obscure over here.
>>
>>15298281
But quite possibly more popular than in Japan.
>>
>>15297934
my guess is that after MG releases chapter 3 of higu, they'll quickly shit out a new TL for chapter 4 since it's the shortest one, then just re-use their old translation for the answer arcs and release them all at once instead of grind them out over the next 3 years. with some good luck boys we might have the newly translated higurashi chapters out before 2018.
>>
>>15298365
I don't think Umineko is that obscure in Japan. It's very hard to find sales for the VN, but I did manage to find some for the manga

From what I could find in the Oricon rankings, it seems each volume of Episode 1 sold about 80-100 000 units, Episode 2 sold 35-70 000, and 3 and 4 sold around 20-40 000

Aside from those, I only managed a few volumes from Chiru, which sold about 20-25 000 each, so I guess the popularity was reduced with time

And I also found the American sales for the second volume of Episode 1, which sold an astonishing 409 units. Pretty amazing
>>
>>15298409
>then just re-use their old translation for the answer arcs
I doubt they'll do that. They even fixed Umineko's translation for the new release, which wasn't nearly as bad as Higurashi's
>>
>>15298650
>409 units

Is that less than what the anime sold in Japan?
>>
>>15298650
>And I also found the American sales for the second volume of Episode 1

What format are you talking about...VN/Anime/manga?
>>
>>15299260
Yes, the anime's total sales were 13 208, which sounds pretty decent, but keep in mind that Umineko had 26 episodes and 13 volumes, which brings the average per volume to about 1016, which is really pathetic. No wonder they never adapted Chiru
>>
>>15299366
Manga. The English VN isn't out yet, and I can't find anything about the sales of the American Blu-Ray, but I assume it probably didn't sell very much either

I didn't think Umineko was re-translated for the steam release, given how fast it was put up compared to Higurashi. Maybe it was touched up a bit though. Also the answer arcs of Higu had a somewhat better translation quality than the question arcs did, so they might re-use them if they think it won't be economical to re-translate.

Looking at it again, it seems 409 was just an estimate, so it might not have been accurate. I found some actual sales for it though

It's listed here with 2762 total sales in 2013. It doesn't say which volume it is for some reason, but based on the publication date, it should be volume 1 of Episode 1

Being 2013 and taking into acount that Yen Press releases 1 book per 4 months, it could be either Episode 2 Volume 2, or either of the two Episode 3 volumes.

I guess that's just american sales? European people buy the english version too, which is imported.
>>
>>15300028
It says the publication date is 1211, which I assume means November 2012, the same month volume 1 was released

It's only going to have 8 episodes, so that isn't too surprising.

But it isn't actually that bad if you think about it. The anime adapted Onikakushi in 4 episodes, which is around 80 minutes. Each live action episode is an hour long, meaning they spent around 120 minutes on it. It may be rushed, but at least it isn't as rushed as the anime

I haven't read it, obviously, but judging by the plot summary it sounds like it could be better

>After finding out who the real murderer is, Furude Rika and Maebara Keiichi decide to put an end to the whole mystery, but they are in a different situation than Matsuribayashi-hen. Before they can do anything, they have to solve other people's problems. The issues of Watanagashi-hen, Meakashi-hen, Tatarigoroshi-hen, and Tsumihoroboshi-hen are met here, and all of them must be solved. This arc solves all the mysteries of the series, adds a few new ones, and gives the origins of both Hanyū and the Hinamizawa Syndrome. While the ending is sad, ending with everyone except Hanyū surviving, it is seen by some as a more meaningful end to the series.
>>
>>15307331
I'm in the process of doing so, not very good at Japanese though, so expect it will take a few hours.
>>
>>15307385
>and gives the origins of both Hanyū and the Hinamizawa Syndrome.
I've been confused about this part for a while now. I've seen some people claim that it confirms Hanyuu is an alien, and that Hinamizawa Syndrome came from her spaceship or something like that, but as far as I can tell, the part with her backstory is just a short excerpt from Kotohogushi-hen, which has nothing to do with aliens at all.

Has anyone here actually read Miotsukushi, and could shed some light on all this?

>With the manga version of Umineko, however, we considered the work to be a “period” to the “sentence” that is the world of Umineko.

>Because of this, when I met with Natsumi-sensei [Kei Natsumi, the artist of the manga adaptation of Umineko’s eighth episode], I asked her to show all the secrets in a way that can easily be understood by anyone.

Taking this into consideration, does that mean Kinzo really did kill the soldiers? It's one of the few parts I'm still unsure about

Yeah, Warlock is more accurate. It just sounds a bit weird since I'm so used to seeing him called The Endless Sorcerer

I think the most accurate translation would be Magician though, since the Japanese word used is 魔術師
>>
>>15322846
That would be the most correct translation indeed.
Quoting good old wikipedia:

It's brown with a wig in the manga from what I have seen, but of course Lion in the VN has blonde hair. In the kakera where he is accepted, why would his hair be different? At the same time, Beatrice of course talks about how she would become Battler's ideal, blonde and bouncy implying she did not have blonde hair.

Yasu's hair was always brown for sure. I'm not too sure about Lion.

I've seen some people suggest that the way Lion looks in the VN isn't his real apperance, but just an alternate apperance Bern made for the game board, so it wouldn't be too obvious who the culprit was. That's just speculation though

But what if the reason for not throwing Yasu off a cliff in that case was because Yasu happened to be a cute girl?
>>
>>15329880
What he means is the scope of the catbox, or the scope of the events that take place. So Bern is ripping out the kakera that encompass Yasu's life after birth and the circumstances that would lead to the Rokkenjima Massacre. As an example of how doomed the family is, Bern demonstrates that even if Natsuhi accepted him, the adults would still kill over gold. Imagine the timeline of events inside of a square. Outside of the square would be Kinzo and Beatrice meeting, her dying, Beatrice II's birth, Yasu's conception, etc.. Inside would be infant Yasu's life after Beatrice II gives birth to him.

That was me just kidding around and saying Battler is exactly like Black Battler.

Battler himself is only suicidal as Tohya and just a little incestuous with Jessica, he's a cool dude otherwise.

So what exactly was the deal with Battler during the ending. In the real world did he realize who Beatrice was and fall in love with her again and stay with her, allowing him to escape the accident that killed everybody else? As the ending is the cause of his memory loss I assumed it takes place in the real world but I'm kind of confused at the whole ordeal and would like to understand it better.

He and Yasu escape on the boat, Yasu jumps off to kill himself, Battler tries saving him but passes out and almost drowns instead and washes up where he gets found with amnesia. His memories become disconnected from himself so he basically becomes a different person, and the very end gives whatever's left of his Battler personality closure so it can disappear and stop bothering him.

Or at least that's my understanding.

I was more confused as to why Battler was on the boat with Yasu in the first place, if the entire point of the first four episode's is that Battler doesn't remember the promise he made with her then it doesn't make much sense that he does in the real world, unless Yasu wrote the stories in a bottle before the family meet up as "what if" scenarios and in the real world he actually did remember her. Honestly the saddest thing for me is we didn't get more lovey dovey moments between Battler and Beatrice like we did in his game for Ange in episode 8.

The ending takes place after Episode 7's Tea Party. Yasu finds Battler after everyone else are dead, and then he notices that she has the same voice as Shannon. Then they escape and all that

Battler escaping to the boat with Yasu is just an extension of the Ep 7 tea party, aka what actually happened. I don't think Battler actually remembered his promise with Yasu until much later, they were just escaping together because the island was going to blow up. You have to remember that what happens in the episodes has nothing to do with the real world and what actually happened.
