mirawi, yeah he died. RIP. Honestly his style was perfect for denpa, I lost a lot of my motivation for denpa when he passed away.

That said, he wasn't the only composer, bermei.inazawa was also involved, it was just an experimental area to do weird shit.

I wonder if moe denpa composers still try to follow Pandasan Youchien's example, it's pretty much キチガイ+萌え.

There was a mosaic and a couple IOSYS releases. But I feel you. Looking at the majority of album covers just makes me feel bummed out at how difficult it would be to distinguish them from each other without the names on them..
>>
>>15124525
Pandasan Youchien is so eclectic and unique, there are individual tracks from newer artists that go in the same category of appreciation in my mind, for having a similar progressive approach, but nothing comes close to that experience I think, as a whole album.

And to think that it was released in 2002, denpa song as a term we know today wasn't really a think back then, I think it's a really interesting case of study about what creative process could've been behind it.
The following concept album after it was also composed as a whole experience in a disc.

Didn't milirobo.beta make a tribute to Nekonabe?
They really tried to bring out the weird aspect of denpa so it isn't surprising they were a main influence.

i will go too. i should order my ticket already just in case...

Any anybody planning to be in Japan on 6/4, there are *2* denpa music events going on. You can listen to denpa music for about 14 hours!

In the afternoon is Denkyun, a fairly big and famous event. Nao will be a DJ.
http://tweetvite.com/event/denkyun13

Then at night time until morning is Odin Paradise. This is a more underground event. You can eat oden, and see a mini live from Cinnamon Sugar.
http://tweetvite.com/event/op7

Both usually play a good mix of different types, but you can probably hear a lot more original doujin denpa music at odin paradise. Denkyun has more famous guests (like nao) and you can hear a broad range of denpa music. Usually Denkyun daytime events have live guests and nighttime events have only DJs, but this time it switched from night to day, so there's no live guests. Or at least, not yet.

If you have any questions about how to attend them or something, let me know.
>>

I got my ticket a few weeks back. I think they are still selling them, so you should be fine. You need a Japanese address though. I didn't know about those other events. I'm there for a week so I may end up going to them.

>>15140359
Oh shit. I may have to attend this too.
>>
>>15141512
Do we know if there's going to be a stream?
If not, any chance some anon going would stream it for the rest of us unfortunate souls?
>>
>>15139776
Probably 閉店セール is my favorite since it feels like the spiritual successor to Nekonabe. I like every song but especially 逆さまカレー and ヒーロー. Also, not songs but I got to know the album due to someone uploading tracks 30 and 94 to Nicovideo so I like them too, I like how surreal they feel. Although that applies to the whole album. It's always funny to remember 霜月はるか, 茶太 and 片霧烈火 were doing these things.
>>
Is there anywhere to find booklet scans for denpa albums or do I have to find specific flac+bk releases for them? I've been using lyric sheets to learn more Japanese vocab and it's fun to read along.
If anybody is willing to upload a scan collection to Mega or Mediafire, that would be really cool.
>>

>>15142506
>>15142429
It'll probably be a few weeks till people get their orders from Melonbooks and Tora. But as of now, no there aren't any rips out that I know of yet.
>>
>>15141512
Yeah I got the ticket. I live in Japan so the address is no problem. I haven't decided if I'll go to the mogra event or not because i'm poor right now, and I want to be fully rested for Denfes... I went to the first Denpa Song Dai Sensou event (volume 0) and it was a lot of older erogame songs, almost no doujin stuff except for a couple popular touhou songs. Still fun but I had the impression the DJs are not specifically into denpa songs for the most part. Then again, there are different DJs every time, so who knows...

ARM is one of the main composers and the one who makes most of the denpa stuff.

What was your route for the event? I kind of screwed up but I still enjoyed it so whatever.

Denkyun / Toromi: Denkyun DJs had good song selection, and Toromi was cute as usual. I stayed up here and missed Momobako's surprise performance though. I saw Nanahira come out and listen when they were playing the Umaru-chan song. To get back stage you had to go through the 'heaven' stage, so you could see every guest around there if you kept your eyes open.

ave;new: Hell stage was so crowded but I managed to get in. Couldn't see too much but it was a lot of fun. Felt like the crowd didn't know the songs that well, I wonder if many people were camping out spots for later performers. Also many people as usual don't know Saori's color is white. dress had equipment trouble again but it wasn't as bad as Denkyun and overall his set was great. I just wish he would play Otona ni naru no desu since there is almost no chance to hear that live. Afterwards lined up for their goods sales and managed to get the new CD but I didn't even listen to it yet...

Next watched t+pazolite, all instrumental stuff, but I do like his instrumental stuff too. Would be fun with some room to dance more but a big crowd is fun it it's own way.

MOSAIC.WAV: Got to move up closer though I still couldn't see much besides the screen. Fun as always and their anime song mashups are always creative and funny. Wish they could make a CD of them since it's hard to take it all in from one listen.

D.Watt: It was fun and nice to see the guests, but to be honest I'm not the biggest fan of his general take on "denpa" songs. Not bad or anything but a little to relaxed / cool for me to get pumped up at a concert. Scarlet Keisatsu was the highlight. Koko is soooooooooo cute.

Koishio Ringo: I missed the very start but as usual she is a good denpa song DJ, though less doujin stuff than usual despite being a doujin event. Her live part was cute and sweet as always. For the first time I successfully got her to give me her 'paw.'

sumijun: Stayed here until it was time for Natsu no Mamono hoping I'd see Nanahira but I didn't. He was mostly playing cool dance music.

Natsu no Mamono: I was curious about them for a while, and I figured I'd never have another chance to check them out, so I went for it, but yeah I regret missing Nanahria and Momobako... Natsu no Mamono was funny though, they did a pro wrestling skit where Black DPG (who includes Metropoly V "Metoko-chan" as a member) kidnapped ARM and a pro-wrestler who 'just happened to be in the audience' came to save him and they fought in the audience among the crowd. At the end they let you take photos too. It was really funny, but the audience was barren compared to the other performers even tough these guys are 'professionals' among 'amateur' doujin artists, which is kind of funny. Still, I got to get close to the front because of that, so I decided to keep my spot for ARM's performance since it was behind schedule and I didn't know if I could get out / in again with the potential crowding.

Beat Mario: More instrumental stuff than I expected, but really funny and energetic as usual. He spit on me! As usual the crowd got riled up for Erin.

ARM: People came rushing in, I was near the front I suddenly got squished up even closer from all the people. His DJ part was good, what can I say? He has so many good songs when it comes to denpa, it's hard to miss. I was glad to be close. He called a ton of guests, and they mostly sang short versions of their songs, so the time flew by. Nanahira was sooooo cute at this part. I was really glad to have a close spot. My favorite song with Nanahira and ARM is Magical Nowarun, so I was hoping to hear it, but no such luck. miko and quim were fun, quim always surprises me with how cool he acts on stage. Momiji had a costume of Moniko (the girl on ARM's album cover.) She was awesome of course. Wish she could have sang Kneesocks in full instead of just short.

Surprisingly no encore or comments from each member at the end, just calling up the "kami VIP" fans who payed 50,000 yen for a special ticket to get their photos and prize (but they forgot the plaques for them in Sapporo so they have to give them to them later...) Instead they handed them their sign boards, and they could choose which guest to get them from, two guys chose Nanahira. (Personally I would have chosen ARM because I can't chose a singer... or Shaking Pink if that would be allowed even though they didn't perform.. they were all there though!)

I'm so jealous ;_;

Are denpa events regularly held or they're a rare occurrence? My greatest desire is to listen to Nanahira live, to cheer Toromi and have her hit me with a hammer, to squirm in pleasure as denpa pounds my brain. I want to have some Japanese proficiency before going but I keep reading and watching recordings of past events and fear my favorite artists are going to die or retire or I'll miss a one-time event if I don't go already.
>>
>>15198853
For denpa exclusive events, right now club events are the most common, generally one or two every few months. Some will just have DJs, others will have live guests too. All of the different events are fun in their own ways. Lately they keep overlapping even though there's few events... (One day had Denpa Song Dai Sensou all night event and then DenFes day event immediately after. Next is Denkyun day event -> Opara all night event...)

Big live events like Den Fes that focus on denpa are pretty rare, even Den Fes has half about hardcore/dance music. But smaller events with mostly denpa are held sometimes. One example would be twinkle sister live, which is held about twice a year and has twinkle as well as other doujin music guests (mostly denpa, but not all.)

Also singers now and then like Nanahira or Koko will be guests at events for Touhou or anime music or stuff like that. And of course, singers of erogame songs have their own events too. Composers also sometimes DJ at different events, especially Vocaloid ones may show up at Vocaloid events. (Though I think most denpa song fans would rather hear their songs sung buy human singers.)

And of course, M3 is held in fall and spring, and Comike in winter and summer. Though there's no performances at them, you can buy CDs and meet a lot of singers and composers.

Denpa music seems to be getting more popular, and the fans are getting more organized, so I think there will be more and more events. (But they may get more and more watered down in intensity as well.)

Just wondering about how regularly I should be checking RTL... Do new rips usually get posted here before/as they are added to RTL?
>>
>>15201679
I feel the exact same way. Unless the albums are just being placed somewhere out of the standard that RTL appears to hold as far as folder organization, everything looks the same whenever I go as well. Not knocking it, but it does seem neglected compared to the threads here.
>>
>>15202008
>>15201679
Everything is actually up to date from at least winter comiket. I don't know nor have any contact with RtL, but trust that it eventually gets added. I'm guessing RtL is waiting for more albums to get posted before uploading. During events you are better off browsing here and the DS thread for items as soon as they are uploaded.
>>
I was supposed to get some new things to share today, but I live in the US and USPS sent my package to the wrong state. Hopefully they'll fix it soon.

I imagine the denpa following a stronger path to my door, because I want it more.
>>
>>15207391
If that happened it'd come to my house instead tho.
>>
>>15207177
That denpa takes so long to arrive normally, what an added frustration. Last time I was so excited to get the slip in the mailbox that I couldn't wait for the truck to return to the post office at the end of the day. So I hunted the guy down, that is how bad I wanted my denpa!

Kind of a newbie to all this.

What are the most technically complex and denpa bands/albums? Is there a prog denpa subgenre?

More specific to my other musical interests: who's the Denpa Frank Zappa? Or what Denpa artists were obviously inspired by FZ? I know he only went to Japan for one set of concerts :-(. It's also interesting some of his synclavier stuff has certain elements in common with what I'ver heard of denpa stuff so far, particularly the sophisticated silliness of something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUvH3xf0e-l
>>
holy shit based anon! Thank you!
>>
>>15218392
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUvH3xf0e-l
Unfortunate. What was the example?
>>
>>15218392
I always got a close Zappa vibe from a lot of デッドボールP music, but that's vocaloid.
>>
>>15218541
argh...it was the original synclavier version of "G-Spot Tornado," but really the whole Jazz from Hell album. For less complex vocal stuff I was thiking things like I'm so cute n particular. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT1m4ud5LRM

Also
"Disco Boy," Tryin' to Grow a Chin," "Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station." Maybe "Montana" just 'cause they kind of have that auditory cartoon feeling and goofy voices.

But basically just looking for the most compositionally adventurous kind of denpa with changing meters and polyrhythms all that kinda thang. The possibility of doing complex stuff while still having pop appeal is what has so far drawn me to jpop and related stuff.

>>
>>15224988
>one of the most unique voices
How can it be described? I'm very attracted by it, too. It's so soft and pleasant. And I'm just realizing what it is that I don't like so much about nanahira's voice; it is kind of adenoidal. Maybe too penetrating for my liking. Caramel's tone is sweet and airy, and it feels like she really senses it with the warmest intent.
>>
>>15225156
I think it has to do with the way she enunciates words too. A soft voice, with a lot of "w" shaped sounds, and very lazy enunciation, almost like the way a stereotypical drunkard slurs words, but without the obnoxiousness.

Something about the whistles in ちあちああちち makes it very addicting to me. みるく帝國へようこそ is also fun. It reminds me of メタウサ姫.

>>
>>15230535
That's hilarious. No... well, I won't delete an album because of it. I hang on to albums sometimes if there's just one track that I like. As for the 5ft brown fucks, I guess it depends how cheesy it sounds. Sometimes I can't understand what they could be saying that would possibly add value to the song, so there's that hazard of it just being corny. I guess that's what you mean. But a lot of times with this music I just don't wanna hear any male voice disturbing the fantasy.

Depends on how far you want to go back. Anything 2+ years back will take a bit of effort and cost you a lot more. If you are looking for nanahira specifically, amazon.co.jp has her cds within the past year and ships internationally.

I gave up on searching for hard copies of KTHT-0001~0008. Early stuff was mostly vocaloid anyways. KTHT-0020+ should still be available throughout various places. There were poyahchio albums within the past two years at the two tora shops next to animate when I visited last week. I'm sure you could find albums from 2-4 years ago at a more music-centric doujin shop.

Bookmark it if you are looking for some old stuff. It's not always a guarantee, but a great place to start. Found an older doubleeleven album on there. A quick search shows me that some of the old vocaloid albums that ポヤッチオ did are on there at the time I am typing this.
Of course you need a proxy buyer if you are a filthy gaijin (tenso, goody japan etc). We really should start adding this info to the OP post of the denpa threads as this usually gets asked every thread.
>>
>>15251300
Speaking of Suruga-ya, they opened up 2 storefronts in in Akiba recently. Denpa fans should check out the "anime" location on chuo doori. It has about 4 shelves for doujin music, 1 of which is original and the rest are touhou or other arranges. You can find some good denpa classics. Also, there is lots of erogame music, including a big shelf for CDs that were only available as bonuses to buying the game, which is convenient if you only want the CD. For the most part, they stock mainstream stuff compared to the more obscure stuff you can find on their site, but its fun to browse in person.

The second location calls itself the "game" location, but it's focused only on retro games. You won't find any erogame soundtracks there, so it's not of much interest if you're only looking for denpa CDs. It's located where White Canvas used to be, and White Canvas moved up in the building. Retro game store BEEP is also next door which focuses on old PC games which is pretty interesting if you wanna see some very old erogames.

There are different methods of writing Japanese in English, and the ん letter is an unusual one. By the most popular method, it's written as "n", but there is another method that writes it as "m" that has fallen out of favor in recent years. That's my understanding. In any case, there's no deep meaning behind it related to denpa or anything like that, just a linguistic thing.
>>
>>15242639

ん is more often pronounced as /m/ by Japanese speakers than /n/ when it precedes /b/ or /p/.

When people romanize Japanese, there are various methods, but the biggest split between them would be romanizing to mimic pronunciation and romanizing to mimic the construction of kana. So "dempa" is closer to the way people would actually say the word, while "denpa" preserves the kana that would be used to write it (デンパ). You can see similar examples in words like sempai/senpai or tempura/tenpura.
>>
>>15257673
>ん is more often pronounced as /m/ by Japanese speakers than /n/ when it precedes /b/ or /p/.
Whether you're a Japanese speaker or not is irrelevant; it's just how lips work. Unless you're carefully accentuating every phoneme, if you try to pronounce an 'n' followed by a bilabial stop ('p' or 'b'), it ends up sounding like 'm', because the shape of your lips when starting to pronounce a 'p' or 'b' is the same shape as you end an 'm' with. This is why in English, words with the in- prefix (invisible, indomitable etc.) followed by a 'p' ended up with 'in' being corrupted as 'im' (impossible, improbable etc.).

Sorry, I don't wanna enter into any big format debate, but I don't get it. All these files appear to be 320, so doesn't that make it CBR? The encoder I use allows for a VBR setting of highest=320 and lowest=320, which confuses me about how that differs, if at all, from going straight 320 CBR.

Thanks for the upload, btw, I'm really enjoying it.

Why the heck would you do that
Let VBR run itself

That's what I'm asking. I'm confused that people label zips (v0) when all the mp3s say 320, because I thought it meant VBR.

Example of what I mean.

This was labeled (v0). Maybe the encoder that was used chose to make 320 all throughout the VBR? I don't understand.

I don't know if you can trust Windows's display. Open it in foobar and look at the bitrate indicator there.

Thanks, that cleared it up for me.
