the art/ero scenes? I mainly play for the story
but depending on the novel the art may sway me
to play it, even if the story is not up to standard.
I slowly lose touch with reality the longer I read and its suddenly really jarring when I reach the end and I can't hear their voices anymore. I spend about two weeks incredibly depressed afterwards and desperately try to find something to fill the void.

For the interaction. Building a relationship with the characters in the VN and slowly falling in love. Art is a definite plus though story was never that important to me as long as the cute girls are endearing.
Thats partly why I like the xCation games so much(aside from PxC1). Less focus on a overarching story and more on individual characters.

I'd say mainly play for the characters. The story is important too but I would not say it's the most vital. You can have a VN with mediocre story but a great cast and be a fantastic title (basically all August titles, Majikoi etc). Even VN with atrocious story can be somewhat redeemed by having good characters but pretty much never vice versa. At the end of the day, if good story is all you want a proper novel is a better medium.
I almost never play VN for H content because most of them are so bad but occasionally there are a few godly nukiges. Recently Houkago 3 for example is really decent.

The first two H-scenes are genuinely hot. It helps you can really feel the bond between Saya and the MC.The rape scene and the scene with MC's friend are fucked up but you can still fap to them despite (or because) of it.
