I regularly watch live streams on Nico Nico and since today I can't connect to the site. I checked on a downornot site and it says "down for everyone". One guy in the comments says that 2 subsites do work (they do for me and I'm still logged in), another says that with a JP IP it works.
I used Nicoviewer to check out if it loads videos and it does.
Meaning:
not maintenance related, working for Japanese people/with proxy = IP block for the West?
Official twitter, facebook didn't come up with anything, neither did google. Nothing on 4chan or reddit either.
Does anyone know anything about this issue? I wouldn't mind if it were maintenance or some temporary thing or even DDOS shit... but if they really started IP blocking that would annoy me -__-
Oddly enough I can view stuff using the mobile app without a proxy, but I can't connect to niconico on my desktop.
Desktop version doesn't work for me either but the mobile one does, i cant load any videos on it however.
Yeah I don't get how I can watch streams on my phone while connected to WiFi but the website won't load on my desktop.
It's blocked for foreign IPs. I tried with a Japanese proxy and it worked.

I actually doubt that many foreigners visit niconico. Most people won't even know about it.. or they only associate it with anime streaming in Japan, MMD and AMVs. I've found quite a number of gems there myself but I mainly watch live streams. Be it speedruns, casual plays, chats or other random shit like people walking around Japan with a webcam or people cooking and eating food. Heck, I've even found people streaming while sleeping lol
It also helped improving my comprehension of spoken Japanese. Watching raw anime or movies is easier now. It's also nice to leave it in the background while cooking or browsing^^

Other than the initial access issues yesterday when the four 48 groups where broadcasting at the same time, it seems the Japanese can use Nico just fine. I've been getting all the new live alerts with NicoNicoAlert as well, just can't actually see anything. Sites like Chikuran and nico.ustbang list new broadcasts too as usual. So either a selective or a complete block of outside connections.
I hope it gets fixed soon.
If your proxy is slow and you only need one stream, you could load up the stream, then disconnect your vpn. I tried this and the stream continued again after a second, maybe it will work for you guys.

The Taiwanese website was the first to apologise, as their entire site has been affected and their customers are pissed off. This is followed by the English announcement a day later. Basically they had been very slow about this, and yeah, if this was the Japanese customers they would have been more transparent.

Once you get in through a VPN or something you can connect to other streams through that bar at the bottom that lists them. You can't shift through other categories though, and you have to be careful not to browser refresh by clicking the arrows.

That sort of thing likely happens all the time. But we only notice it NOW, because when it happens with Japanese customers Nico would fix it quickly. With the problem localised to foreigners, they are probably unwilling to fix the problem in a way that might also break it for their local customers too.

For the niconama portion, only new and restored user sessions check your region to apply the region lock. That means you have to log out and log back in with a Japanese ip to access the location-based restricted content (just having a jp proxy isn't enough: you need to relog with the proxy).
