I can explain.
Basically, it is like every hardware MIDI sound module.
It is a big box with a sound output, you plug your headphones in it and attach it to your PC with a MIDI to USB cable (you can also play with a keyboard if you wish!).
When on your PC, open your Digital Audio Workstation of your choice, i use FL Studio, and then simply create a new MIDI out channel and assign it to the SD-90.
The program will send signals to the SD-90 with MIDI, and the SD-90 converts that to sound, which you will head in your headphones (or speakers, if you use those), from there, you can create multiple MIDI channels and create a song. You can turn the knobs on the SD-90 to get all kinds of sounds.
The SD-90 also has different instrument sounds for every velocity level, so it sounds pretty interesting on a keyboard with touch enabled, you are also freely to use this in composition.
You can also record from the SD-90 with the USB cable, which allows you to save your songs to files.
I've been using it for 5 years, it's really fun, especially if you are a fan of ZUN's music and the power of MIDI.

Actually, lately SD-90's are fucking hard to come by, so i'm not really sure just "buying another" would be a valid option. But ZUN being who he is, i wouldn't really be that bad. We're talking about a guy that has been using FM synths for most of his life. He just needs to keep some samples to analize, and he'll be able to recreate his sounds easily. It might not be cigar, but we wouldn't hear the difference.
On the other hand, loosing all the data from the original releases of EoSD, PCB and IN, now that would fuck him up.

You are misinformed, SD-90's are uncommon, but they are not hard to come by, i have helped multiple people get their hands on one.
The thing is, online retailers use tricks to keep their value this high.
They have them in stock, but they will only list them periodically, to trick the consumer into thinking it is worth the purchase and should get it before it goes away.
