Alswo Kanako is one of the 2hu's I actually dislike. Hate even. She left the outside world becuase of how shit it was, and then decided to poison Gensokyo with the same shit that caused her to run from the outside world. By which I mean materialism, commercialism and other bullshit that killed spirituality. Selling dam merch, what a shameless god. She deserves the inevitable lack of actual followers.

My main issue is her attitude towards religion/spirituality in general though. Given how important belief is in Gensokyo, her and Byakuren are probably the biggest threats. Byakuren because by making youkai stop acting like youkai, you are pretty much killing them or garunteeing they will die off.
Why is the state of religion in Gensokyo so terrible? I think they need a ruler to force them to all follow state run Shinto, and punish any who deviate. Shinto allows all these supernatural entities, and unlike Buddhism wont have youkai kill themselves by not being youkai. Taoists should probably be removed too, given how Miko seems to favour humans over youkai, when the relationship needs to be humans fearing youkai.
Also why doesnt Reimu just ignore human faith and donations and encourage more youkai at her shrine? Humans arent needed, doesnt Moriya get plenty of faith from Tengu?

Like I said, the issue I have is where they ignore the spiritual side of things in favour of numbers/donations/"worshippers". Populists are the cancer of religion, you may argue religion needs to appeal to people to survive, but not to the point where the religion becomes an empty husk.
Have you read WaHH? Look at Reimu using festivals to just set up stalls for money. It gets people to attend her shrine and it gets her more money, but how is that helping spiritually? The people arent there for spiritual reasons, they are there for the shitty stalls.
This is bad because of how important spirituality/belief is in Gensokyo. Youkai need people to believe in them, and so do gods. If people dont believe then they are worthless, only good for youkai food. Humans are in Gensokyo as cattle for belief because thats the most important thing for all the youkai there. Nothing is more important than faith, without it Gensokyo would be fucked. Hence Reimu and Sanae are terrible people, as they think money and half hearted "worshippers" are what they need. Sanae is worse becuase Kanako even says in SoPM how religion has fallen, where people dont even worship gods anymore and just visit shrines thinking they can "power up". Why would you flee a world without faith, then introduce shitty systems that partially caused that loss of faith, in a world where belief is the thing keeping most of the population alive?

Entirely headcanon bullshit, but I like to imagine Reimu herself is a youkai like entity. Given how Japan cares so little for Shinto at this point, and miko are just fetish bait, done for traditions sake and tourism. I imagine that Reimu is in Gensokyo due to Japan forgetting about their own religion. I remember some anon saying that most Miko these days only do it as a part time job, and I think if you asked if they actually believed, most would say no. Shinto will probably die out in our lifetime.

It shoudltn come to the point where the religion itself must be compromised.
Secondly, Buddha, Jesus, Ascetics of various religions, Christian and Buddhist monks. All got by on charity, they didnt need much and didnt have to change their religion to get more money. Some monks even grew their own food and lived self sufficient lives.
Also, when you are friends with things like Yukari, Suika, Remilia, Sakuya, etc you dont really need money. Plent of youkai with different powers, some powers that not even money can buy, and that can grant you amazing things. It's up to her to utilize them, Kasen manages to feed her animals just fine while maintaining a dojo and a drinking habbit.
Remilia is able to pay for god knows how many maids, and furniture while supporting a hikikomori mage, mentally ill sibling, little devil, and a gate guard.
In the worst case scenario Reimu could just become a magician like Alice to save money on food.
In Gensokyo money is really not important. Unless you're trying to cross the river, but thats all generated by your virtue, so even then money isnt important.
