K-On is an exemplary work in a fairly narrow genre. Among those people who are interested in moe and slice-of-life it is universally known (though seeing as it aired before the current spike in popularity of anime, a good proportion of the aforementioned probably haven't actually watched it), but the great majority of so-called anime fans today likely have no awareness of it, even if they might have heard the name here and there. Compare shows like Lucky Star, TTGL, and Code Geass. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn't at least heard those names, but despite being much more popular genres than moe and slice-of-life I'd be willing to bet the proportion of people currently actively watching anime as a hobby who have seen them is fairly low. This is a function of their age primarily, as they aired between the current and the previous (late 90s to early 2000s) spike in popularity of the medium. The effect is even more pronounced in such niche genres as those K-On inhabit, and so even if everyone within those circles is familiar with it, which is certainly not the case, the wider circles in which those reside are likely to be almost completely devoid of such familiarity.
Honestly, I think K-On was too good. It's really hard to feel as fulfilled by such shows anymore, and these days the better ones are often shorts which focus on the vital aspects of the genre while abandoning the character development and relationship progression that gave K-On that extra push out of "good" or even "great" territory into "extraordinary."
