In the past, ship naming was very hectic. The 3 Seawolf subs ended up with a fish, state and president.
More recently there have been moves to enact more uniformity in naming. If I remember correctly carriers generally got past presidents, virginia class subs got states, destroyers got deceased persons of importance, LCS got important cities.
Others are important battles, explorers, military figures.

Historically the two battleships chased down and sank IJN ships that tried to escape from Truk. Iowa got Katori and NJ sunk Maikaze.

Midway was a decisive victory for the USN and started a string of victories, but it still took a while afterwards for the USN to get complete dominance, especially in number. At one point Enterprise was the only allied carrier in the Pacific. Later we were shitting carriers.
