Most hobbies appear perfectly fine if you keep your home clean and hobby related items presentable. Even my otaku stuff looks fine when I cleaned my place up and bought a nice shelf for them.
I haven't made anything custom, most I've done is trim a wig a little and style it differently. I remember seeing some tips on customizing on the dollfie dream forum a long time ago. Last I've been there that site was reasonably sane and friendly, maybe it wouldn't hurt to check out that place. The guide I used when I was working on my girl's wigs was written by someone who posts there.

The Fairylands have more range of motion, but the Volks is MUCH more solid when posed. Volks dolls have amazing leg "strength" and great sit locks, they're rock solid when either standing straight up or sitting on a chair. The Feeple can barely stand if you balance her perfectly, and she sucks at sitting, but for photos and stuff she can do cooler poses. The Fairylands have better arms and necks, too.
I think the Volks is probably the one with better engineering and overall quality, but man, the FL just is so damn gorgeous. She's huge, too, which is kind of cool in my book.
Oh, also, the FLs can't really wear underwear if you want them to sit on something, they get caught in the hip joints.

Vinyl is very porous and soaks up dye like nobody's business, and fabric makers don't really worry about dye stability.
I mentioned this earlier, but staining is a big part of why I'm much more into resin dolls now and my DDs pretty much stay packed up. Not only is resin less likely to stain, but when it does get a stain, it's easier to remove.

Maybe I've been lucky, I've changed the clothes of my girls pretty regularly over the two or so years I've had dolls and I can count the times I've actually had to stain treat any of them on one hand.
Now that I think about it I actually believe Volks clothes are more prone to staining than stuff from other high quality manufacturers such as Coolcat or Dollheart. I haven't seen stains caused by outfits from either of those two at least.

The issue is that doll clothes makers still have to buy bulk fabric from companies that are making it for normal clothes, where it isn't an issue.
Also, a lot of doll clothes are made for BJDs and not for Vinyl dolls, and there's also just demand for dark-colored stuff, despite the risk of staining. Light-colored clothes, or ones that are fully lined in light colors, can help, but they're rare.

Yeah, I've had a wig stain the head cap. Not the end of the world but still a bit annoying. My approach at this point is that I try to do as much prevention as I can but if a body part is stained then it can be treated or I can get a replacement part. The risk of staining the face is almost non-existent, the only wig I've heard about where the fibers themselves stain is Chihayas wig, mine is still unused in the box.
