It seems to me that the vast majority of VNs I play that attempt a story always end up being really boring and poorly paced. In Gun Knight Girl the common route moved at a pretty good pace, exposition about the world being dropped in tantalizing bits, the mystery of the 施設 slowly growing in importance, girls revealing more and more of their personality... and then bam, a major plot point hits (senpai goes missing) and it's been so long since then of 0 progress in any bit of the story, just endless wanking over the situation with some romanced tossed in, the momentum is crushed and I don't even want to read any more of it because it's taking so long for anything to happen and to be quite honest I don't give a single fuck about the predicament, yet it's all MC is thinking about now. I dislike getting really into a VN only for it to cockblock me with god-awful pacing.

Does the common route ends when MC solve this honami's shitty parent problem, or will I be able to see some events with other characters as well? The rambling itself is mostly there in term of links and tips which fit with what the game is going for, lots of it like the various amazon review stuff or the rambling about various subjects like the reason why crossbows are a great killer weapon etc... are only here to deepen the feeling that you are dealing with a bunch of random pieces but I thought it was always pretty entertaining.
The amount of information Romeo put into this game is immense and the way he actually fit it into a singular setting is pretty mindblowing.
Overall I'd say I liked Cross Channel a bit more simply because it had a stronger final but both games are among my favorite

Finally cleared last routes of 機関幕末異聞 ラストキャバリエ. I had pretty high expectations for this VN after trial and Alicematic, and mostly satisfied with how it turned out.
First of all, I have to note that people seem to misunderstand what kind of game it is, assuming very wrong things from synopsis and few comments from those who played it.
- Trap protagonist. This aspect is actually irrelevant and plays no role whatsoever. They make few jokes about in the very beginning and then almost completely forget about it. There's civil war going on, nobody gives a fuck about some random samurai's dressing habits.
- Edginess. Some routes are tragic, some not. One can do Ryoma and Shuri only if afraid of "edgy" stuff.
- This is historical drama, not "charage" or some comedy in historical setting. It strives to depict things realistically, and to explain why things turned out this way, spending most of screentime on politics, intrigues and battles.
Although Takaya went out of his way to explain everything going on, this VN requires familiarity with bakumatsu peroid to some extent, and some people were overwhelmed by amount of historical persons taking part in events or being mentioned. Cavalier is even dubbed as "bakumatsu history textbook" because of it, but there's much more than that in the game. I strongly advice doing true history routes -> Sakamoto route -> Shuri routes, and to use wikipedia extensively while reading true history route, to familiarize oneself with key persons and political landscape.
Some more thoughts on routes (no major spoilers, but YMMV):True history (Kou, Hijikata, Kondou): everything happens exactly as it did in real world (except gender change, of course). Differences between 3 routes are very minor. IMHO, weakest part of game, but it works well if you think of it as introduction to historical period. Also most tragical one, with lots of deaths.
Sakamoto Ryoma route: Takaya's take on what would happen if Sakamoto woulnd't be assasinated in the most critical time. This one is very solid, and actually feels like proper VN route, with romantic buildup and some personal adventures of protag and route's two heroines.
Shuri routes (Shuri+Tokio or Sano+Kazuha, both are exactly same, just different h-scenes and epilogues): best part of game if you read it last. Takaya did some very cool shit with stuff you learn from previous routes, which I shouldn't spoil further.
Overall, almost all aspects of the title, like characters, comedy scenes, battle scenes, plot scenes and so on are executed flawlessly. Why can't all these "supposed to be funny" romcom titles learn from it?
My only complaint (and, sadly, pretty big one) is that game tries to bite off way more than it can handle. Plot spans 6 years from 1863 to 1869, with 3 wars and tons of major incidents, and as result its full of time skips and omissions and there's not much time left for main cast, although its used very efficiently. This is alleviated to some extent in Ryoma and Shuri routes, but they are shorter than true history.
There's also issue with protagonist's partial voicing, and how it goes on and off at random, but its very clear that there were financial or other producing-related problems with it and I'm content with current state, there's already higher percentage of voiced lines than in average eroge.
Either way, I have to note that such project is crazy for current eroge market and only someone like Takaya could pull it off at all, especially Shuri route. For any less talented writer it would fall apart like ChuSinGura's later chapters and FD.
Definitely going to read his next work, whatever it will be.
Gave it 90点 out of 100, with some extra points for Shuri route.

Bit late to the party but I'm really stunned that Gun Knight Girl and Nanairo Reincarnation are written by the same dude, and only a year and a half apart too.
Gun Knight Girl really embodies the main thing I don't like about VNs, which is long-winded, pointless narration and meandering, dull plots intermingled with mediocre - sometimes great - SOL. No matter how funny the writing is or how nice the characters are, the simple fact that the plot goes nowhere for extended periods of time ruins it. In short, bad pacing. Why just now I was holding CTRL to skip through a sex scene and it genuinely took a full minute to skip through a fingering bit... a full minute! At lightning speed! I can only imagine how dull it would have been to read.
On the other hand, Nanairo Reincarnation manages to embody everything I *do* like about VNs. Very tight, well paced writing, interesting story, protagonist that matters, cute girls, great H-scenes... when people make those troll statements, "why not just read a book", Nanairo Reincarnation is what comes to mind, the way lewd intermingles with the story is really well done and a novelization of Nanairo would be quite drab I imagine. But really, pacing is the main thing - something is always happening, something new is progressing the mystery, and most importantly it's *interesting* all the time. Unlike Gun Knight Girl where I was sorely tempted to CTRL through the plot because I knew it didn't matter at all because the character had been fully explored 15 hours of awful plot ago. Well, I'm just speaking of one route that I just finished, if the true route has better pacing I will be sure to say so.
In short, Kazuki Fumi did a really good job with pacing Nanairo Reincarnation and he did a really piss-poor job with pacing Gun Knight Girl to the point I'm surprised he wrote both novels. I am even encouraged to think Gun Knight Girl being a full length "charage" or what have you led to the company encouraging him to pad the absolute shit out of it, I wouldn't be surprised, especially considering that Nanairo being a half-nukige wouldn't have had such a need for SOL padding I imagine. Anyway, that's all unsubstantiated so never mind it.

They're from different companies. I doubt that it's the scenario writers who are pushing for all of these eroge that are so much longer than they should be. It's more likely the producers and the companies who are responding to consumer demands in a market where quantity really is more important than quality.
I don't think your unsubstantiated claims are so unlikely. While I'm not intimately familiar with the development process of eroge I think it's safe to say that it's generally not an auteur medium.

Had recently finished the trial for 働く大人の恋愛事情 and have to say that the adult theme made it refreshing to read through. The encounters that you have with the side characters were pretty fun but I hope they dont go too overboard with the sex scenes and give more time to develop the main heroines.
