In this, Rika is a bullied, misunderstood child who is watching the world she was born into, the village where she she should be the religious leader, come crumbling around her. Her birthright is being destroyed to make way for a damn project. All her former friends are gone, and the child of the family largely responsible for this is the most popular girl in school and has made her an outcast. Tired of watching the walls close in around her, she talks to her imaginary friend, who is a rock, and possibly kills her mother, then definitely kills herself. After death, she goes to her "heaven", where she lives out the happy story she had written for herself.
The theme in this interpretation is the merits of fantasy versus reality. Rika here transitions for a Midori Kusunoki like girl, who feeds her soul to a youkai for delusions of a better life, and Yasu, who more forcefully rejects reality by violently removing herself from it.

I never said that I like it. I prefer to ignore it, much like Hou. Personally, I think that Ryukishi was using this to experiment with anti-fantasy. It is a very Umineko-ish tale, and matches the anti-fantasy Ange-on-the-ledge bit almost perfectly. It wraps it up into a neat little package where fantasy elements don't need to happen, and the reader still gets catharsis (don't be a witch, live in the real world).

It is pure speculation for what was going on in Ryu's head, but I can appeal to the fact that this theme of fantasy vs reality is probably the most prevalent theme in his stories.
I never said that Higurashi was fake either. I have only been saying that Sai cannot be reconciled with the other arcs where both are reality. To try to do so while saving the previous ones as reality involves a pretty cursory reading of Sai.
