What drives people to be obsessive about idols?
>>
Idols are basically designed in a lab to hit every mark when it comes to Japan's obsession with youth and being cute. If they weren't around, people would just latch onto something like Precure instead.
>>
>>14494165
Cute girls doing cute things in their prime age and everyone can watch them. Whats not to love?
>>
>>14494216
That's an explanation for a normal level of interest in it, but we all know idol fans go beyond that.
>>
>>14494226
Its fairly simple really. One aspect got covered, the other one is the passion/obsession of those idol fans you speak of.

Then again, what do they ultimately want to achieve? Its a sort of fetish. I really cannot think of any other driving force than it being sexual.

If the entry age for pornography would be 13, the idol industry would be nearly dead or just a very minor side buisness and not the nations main attraction.
Also couple that with the ever-rising ban of loli and old-school rl loli photosets. There you have it.

On top of all that its 'Wanting to be with the one idol' which is probably very rightly related to the sexual attraction. Those we also see a lot of fans going crazy over casual/everyday photos of their beloved idols.

To top it all off, WHY do you think even foreign groups and communities are drowning in JP idol footage. Surely not because of the girls personalities, or in very rare cases.

I've been to japan once, I realize they HEAVILY defend their idol industry and mention a thousand times its not sexual for them but soemthing else. Especially true for junior idols like madame shiina.
I dont buy that if I am honest.
>>
>>14494250
That's like saying you can't enjoy Touhou or cute girl SoL without jacking off to it. These people exist, you know.
>>
>>14494250
>I really cannot think of any other driving force than it being sexual.

Western pop culture world has ruined your mind. Do you think girls have nothing more to offer than sex?
I'm not saying that it doesn't happen at all, but for the majority of the idol fans sex is extremely far from their minds. The idol industry is also huuuuge. You have groups like AKB48 and Juice=Juice where sexualisation is definitely a driving force, and then groups like Takoyaki Rainbow and Ebichuu where it is not.
>>
>>14494250
It's emotional -- not sexual

Japanese men have many, many easily accessible sexual outlets. A feeling of closeness, companionship, and mutual support is less easily found.
>>
I need femininity in my life.
>>
>>14494354
>A feeling of closeness, companionship, and mutual support is less easily found.

Then why supplant it with something so obviously artificial? No wait, I mean to ask, why supplant it with something not artificial enough? It's weird when real girls have to act it out.
>>
>>14494371
I feel you bro
>>
>>14494383
It might have something to do with the "perfectness" of idols. They're not supposed to have flaws like other people do.
>>
>>14494426
Yes and that obviously doesn't work with real people. Perhaps with anime or eroge characters, I can buy that temporarily.
>>
I don't know if I'm obsessive about idols by the Japanese definition, but I spend a couple thousand USD per year on them (thanks largely to overpriced blurays) and live in Japan so I'd guess that fits your definition. I do date, and had a long term girlfriend (close to 5 years) until very recently, but have been into idols for the past 3-4 years.

Personally I found out about idols through their music. I didn't know much about Japan and wanted to hear their top 10 on iTunes, and ended up finding an idol group I really liked without really knowing what idols were. Western pop music was always my favorite musical genre but I disliked the fact that I'd probably never meet the artist and get to know them, or even buy much merch really. Then I discovered that this Japanese pop was not only made by cute girls, but that I could actually meet them quite easily, and there was a ton of merchandise available.

Anon mentioned that idols are "perfect". For me it's that they are real people I can relate to. I'd be happy to answer any specific questions you have.

>Western pop culture world has ruined your mind
Thats exactly it. I was talking from a very broad perspective. Personally I dont even am into Idols, and why should I make a conclusion based on a minority?

What I wrote was how I see western civilization and what it has become and based on that I believe that it must be sexual for many fans.
Of course its could be entirely different for japanese people, they tend to have a different view on things anyway.

I do agree that for the japanese it could be more of an emotinal thing, thats seems logical to me.

Also this guy nails it: >>14494460
>For me it's that they are real people I can relate to.
>>
>>14494467
Probably the most "foreign" thing I've encountered in Japan as a westerner. At the events I've attended I haven't seen a single other white person. It's all extremely well organized and streamlined. You queue up and for each CD you bought you get a few seconds with a single single girl. It's a crazy amount of pressure for someone who doesn't speak Japanese as a first language, but if you can pull it off, you've made a real impression on and had a genuine interaction with a person who performs your favorite music. That's pretty cool.
>>
I mostly just wish I could fuck them. I don't like their music at all. Their variety shows are fun though.

Take note most of these "wotas" ranges from 30 to 40 year olds w/o a wife and a child.

So I guess there's a daughter-like feeling as well.
Anyways, just throwing it out there. My one cent to the discussion.

There is only one answer
>>
>>14494354
This is correct.

For me, idols are two things. Firstly they're kinda like cheerleaders for your life. You see how hard they work, and their drive, and it encourages you. The other one is as a basic substitute for actual emotional connection. Some people, particularly some males in Japan, find it really hard to get close with others (romantically, or with women in general). So idols fill that void.
>>
>>14494354
Nonphysical love is just a byproduct of our sexual desires, which stems from our instinctual will to reproduce.

>>
It's funny how there are people here claiming that idol fascination isn't, at its core, sexual or lustful. I can guarantee you that if you took some idolfag's favorite idol and made said idol male, he would immediately lose all interest in her even if she retained all of her other supposedly good and attractive qualities.

I guess it's hardly a surprise that your average idolfag is as intellectually/emotionally dishonest as the idols he worships.

>>
>>14505864
That's because boys aren't cute. It's all about the cuteness factor.
>>
If anyone's interested in a feminine perspective, I've put a great deal of time and some money on idols (mostly 48G) since 2011.

I'm in it for the cuteness (that I couldn't find in any other musical genre), for the performances, but mostly for the girls personalities.

48G has some really average girls. Most of them can't really sing. If you look close enough, some of them have bad skin, bad teeth, and some very visible insecurities. I enjoy getting to know them, watching them grow and going though hardships.

You create a sense of closeness to the girls and become emotionally invested. I often have dreams about my favorite idol where we are really close friends and it just feels good.

>irl girls have always made me depressed in the end.

>your favorite idol isn't the way you like anymore or you just got bored of her? no problem, just choose another one.
>your gf isn't the way you like anymore or you just got bored of her? good luck breaking up without having her, her friends and her family hate you.

i could go on but you get the gist of it. it's a decent enough replacement for me and allows me to avoid all the emotional trauma irl bitches cause.

>inb4 bitter kissless virgin
I've had a couple of girlfriends but gave up cause they made me depressed. now I have idols and I have genuinely never been happier.
>>
>>14510079
But you can't fuck your idol, which is the entire point of having a 'girlfriend'/fuck buddy in the first place.

Unless you're idealizing women as a whole (typical for teen-mid20 late bloomers), seeing 'emotional connection'/'blah behind simple fuckbags which seems to be your case.

Groups like SMAP are literally twice the age of the average female idol (which influences and somewhat limits the way the guys should carry themselves, since you can't excuse everything as "youthful" anymore), plus the fact that their programs (SMAP X SMAP, Kisuma Busaiku, etc...) or their concerts aren't remotely like the idol stuff I watch or that I'd want to anyway.
I guess you have to be an EOP to not be able to tell these differences and have to oversimplify things, but all of them are discriminating nonetheless.
>>
>>14510126

Idols were created by marketing organizations for a single purpose, to basically psychologically manipulate young men to the extreme.

Go read interviews with the managers and producers, they ADMIT that Idol genre has basically nothing to do with music and the music itself basically sucks, you can see that in AKB48 where the music is terrible and the girls are amateur singers and dancers at best, the point is, you are supposed to focus on ONE girl and follow her "story" through the industry and her rise to fame. It's basically a similar format to WWE Wrestling with a band instead.

The girls are all designed to be different forms of waifu as well, there is even an AKB48 app where you can marry your waifu and have babies with her.

This is why it's forbidden they can have relationships or even hang out with boys, because the music isn't the product, they are.

Honestly I think Idolshit is a fucking cancer upon the Jpop industry and you can actually see this following sales trends over the years, but even I admit it's basically marketing genius.

Too bad Kpop has hotter girls and actually good production and music.
>>
>>14511765
Yes, because being hot is an adult quality. Essentially, children > adults.
>>
>>14511730
I like watching WWE as well though
>>
>>14494165
Someone like me who will never fall in love with someone in real life, so I end up idolizing Japanese girls in AKB48. Also, I like Asian girls in general anyways.
>>
>>14494693
Damn, I bet that is pretty cool.
Wish I could meet my oshimen in real life but would probably go beta for sure. I've seen Japanese male fans act weird to them but the way the idols handle it professionally is admirable.
>>

>>
>>14494693
this is about right. I have seen other westerners at AKB big handshakes (queued in Hillary's lane like plebs) but not at any other idol events.

I mostly go to SKE handshakes in Nagoya, so white people are even rarer. There are actually a lot of Chinese and Koreans riding under the radar at these events, though.
