Meanwhile, I'm already interacting with other people in VR and have tested in person face tracking technology that works under a VR headset, seeing Miku emulate my facial expressions. The only thing we need is a good voice changer, but otherwise, the future is sooner than you think.
One time, I was in a multiplayer chatroom and someone had a cat avatar. At one point, a real cat came over to that avatar's real person and started purring. The microphone picked up that sound clearly, and my brain was nearly convinced that a real physical cat was in the same physical space with me. When in VR, and visuals match up with aural cues, it's very convincing.
If that can be done with humans, and cats, we can do it with animated grills as well.
